It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

I haven't.

There have been multiple responses on this thread mentioning the use of Karen and how it's misogynistic.

Maybe you've deeply misunerstood.

LOL. So in this example, you think that the customer deserved to be called a Karen, do you?

Suppose there's always Facebook!!

AAahhh!! I was wondering what I was doing wrong as I couldn't find them. Are you able to share the FB page? I would bet they will delete those too.

Why does there need to be a different word for women behaving in this way? Why can't there be an ungendered word for entitled people complaining and being self-important, if that's what Karen actually means? My experience is that when there's a separate word for women doing something it's going to be used in a sexist way - e.g. harridan.

Sorryyoufeelthatway · 08/05/2023 18:40

@Miajk While it used to be true, Karen evolved to simply be a degrading term for ANY woman over 40.

Maybe the Starbucks employee was suffering from PMT or peri rage. Starbucks should be much more accommodating…
What a scary POS! I’m scared for the future.

Oh, as if this were true. It’s a way to shut women up.

I didn't say they had a case. I said I can see them being supported in "a case".

Bearing in mind some of the more fruitloop cases we do see in court, I wouldn't rule this one out.

Employee raises a grievance because they were "discriminated" against (i.e misgendered) which places a duty of care on the employer to protect them from said discrimination. Because of the employers lack of protection the employee feared for their own safety and acted "in self defence" by assaulting the cameraperson.

Do I win an internship at Sue, Grabbit & Runne ? Or Carter-Fuck and partners ?

Ha no, high street solicitors require there to be at least a reasonable prospect of success.

But maybe there is hope? The fox botherer has a history of crowd funding for hopeless cases.

DerekFaker · 08/05/2023 18:43

What would these characters do if they were faced with an elderly person or someone with a learning disability or a partially impaired person? Are they going to thump them for 'misgendering' them as well?

Quite possibly yes. It's happened before, for women having the temerity to go to a meeting.

mauvish · 08/05/2023 18:44

As long as you don't behave like an entitled twat no one will call you Karen.

Unless, of course, that's actually your name, and I'd be pretty enraged if it were my name and used as a term of abuse.

(sorry, sidetrack over!)

Here's a post by a Tweeter connecting the ex-Starbucks TRA barista with this person.

https://twitter.com/MalesInDisguise/status/1655599457797390337

Turn the sound on - voice is male.

And at the end, he points to his earrings and his eye make up, to show that he is not a man.

Well, I don't wear earrings or make up, so maybe I am not a woman, and didn't know it ...

I was in a conversation at work recently when a group of young colleagues felt it was totally understandable that a young transwoman had threatened to glass a male colleague ‘because she felt unsafe’ in his presence (because of a hobby he had, not because of his behaviour at work). When it was suggested that this just wasn’t acceptable language in the workplace, they agreed that it could be defended because transpeople face such discrimination in general, it drives them to overreact. So there you have it.

Childrenofthestones · 08/05/2023 18:48

Leftoverssandwich · 08/05/2023 12:25

That is really appalling and no one could say otherwise. But it’s very rare.

I spent years working in customer service and of course had my share of difficult and unpleasant customers. But none would have justified the behaviour we see here. It’s aggressive and demeaning.

Yes, it's almost like they have an underlying mental condition 🤔

Oh, as if this were true. It’s a way to shut women up.

Some women (and men) should shut up?

The word originated from the fact that these women would yell at teenage employees working as service staff because their order was wrong (when it wasn't) or because the medium steak they ordered is pink. Or because they wanted an extra hot coffee. Or because the food took 5 minutes to arrive.

And yes absolutely in that case they need to shut up because it's entitled, nasty behaviour and you shouldn't eat out if you can't behave. Pulling the misogyny card when called out on this behaviour is pretty pathetic

And let's compare:

Master vs Mistress
Courtier vs Courtesan
Dog vs Bitch
Bull vs Cow

etc

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 08/05/2023 18:50

It's a very deserving nickname for a large portion of women who behave in a specific way. You don't get called Karen unless you've acted like a see you next Tuesday.

No, it's a way of trying to force older women into submission.

It's a way of trying to stop older women exerting authority or being assertive or questioning or criticising any younger person, particularly a younger man.

It's sexist and ageist.

Why do they always start clapping like seals? Reminds me of the angry new York man with his moobs out clapping at woman

It's the real life version of that ridiculously obnoxious way of emphasising a point on a tweet i.e. I 👏 clap 👏 like 👏 a 👏 seal 👏

It reminds me of a housemate I had a long time ago who used to say 'shrug' rather than actually physically shrugging. It was just...

Very bizarre to wish to be assaulted by someone, are you well?

So pleased to see men get a mention. But they don’t get their own special insult. Wonder why?

Karen was one of the most popular girls names in the UK in the early 1960s.

It's now used as a demeaning term for white women of all ages, but especially middle aged. Because middle aged women need taking down a peg or two, right?

Sure, some people are overentitled idiots. But they're not all white women in their late 50s, early 60s. Lumping all self entitled idiots under one common woman's name is a bit like assuming that all people with XXX trait must come from XXX place. In other words it's discriminatory. (Though I know that MOST people on this thread are well aware of that!)
