It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

Some women (and men) should shut up?

So pleased to see men get a mention. But they don’t get their own special insult. Wonder why?

They do. We call them assholes and dickheads. Surely Karen is a nicer word?

Leftoverssandwich · 08/05/2023 18:57

Assholes and dickheads carry no connotation of age though, do they? Or indeed gender really - no one is going to argue with you using them against a woman. Karen is a really special name for a middle-aged woman and I see it used frequently online against women who do no more than have an opinion.

I was in a conversation at work recently when a group of young colleagues felt it was totally understandable that a young transwoman had threatened to glass a male colleague ‘because she felt unsafe’ in his presence (because of a hobby he had, not because of his behaviour at work). When it was suggested that this just wasn’t acceptable language in the workplace, they agreed that it could be defended because transpeople face such discrimination in general, it drives them to overreact. So there you have it.

Jeez ! We're all doomed Captain!

So you could , potentially, kill someone and claim it is justified because people like you often face discrimination? It could turn into a bloodbath out there...

Turn the sound on - voice is male.

And at the end, he points to his earrings and his eye make up, to show that he is not a man.

Well, I don't wear earrings or make up, so maybe I am not a woman, and didn't know it ...

I think he was featured on Libs of TikTok.

And yes absolutely in that case they need to shut up because it's entitled, nasty behaviour and you shouldn't eat out if you can't behave. Pulling the misogyny card when called out on this behaviour is pretty pathetic

Ah, yes. Eat your raw steak and drink your cold coffee and shut the fuck up, old woman.

Is there a word for men who do the same?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/05/2023 17:56

Clouting a member of the public (who hasn't even interacted with you) on camera is gross misconduct in anyone's book, even without the confrontation with the customer. I can't see a pro bono or contingency fee solicitor wanting to waste their resources on this.

The discrimination angle doesn't play because he would need to demonstrate that other employees who have thumped passing members of the public without provocation have been treated more favourably, i.e. have not been sacked.

I hope the fox killer wastes his time, energy and money on it. Keep him out of destroying women's rights.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 08/05/2023 19:04

@Miajk

The whole crying of "don't call me Karen it's so misogynystic" makes literally zero sense. As long as you don't behave like an entitled twat no one will call you Karen.

I appreciate the "Karen" concept originated with a specific type of behaviour (although I think you should reflect on why this behaviour seems to be specific to women - is the real situation, or is it that men can behave in just as "entitled" a way, but it's socially accepted from men so no one has thought to label and condemn it).

Unfortunately a significant section of society interprets a women, especially an older woman, doing anything other than sucking up whatever happens to her and fading into the background as being "an entitled twat", and therefore Karen has now become just another ageist and misogynist slur used to shame women and keep them in their place.

For this reason, it's better to call out the specific behaviour than throw lazy labels around.

if you think this then fine. But it does show that you have not really been following the cultural narrative. It might benefit you to educate yourself.

What would these characters do if they were faced with an elderly person or someone with a learning disability or a partially impaired person? Are they going to thump them for 'misgendering' them as well?

Quite possibly yes. It's happened before, for women having the temerity to go to a meeting.

Here's a police officer who had no compunction in reporting a young man on the autistic spectrum for hurtful comments. Not quite the same as physical retaliation but this will also have long-lasting effects on the young man's future. One wonders how a police officer as thin-skinned as this copes with the rigours of police work. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/uk-news/duty-transgender-police-officer-left-17652064

Some women (and men) should shut up?

The word originated from the fact that these women would yell at teenage employees working as service staff because their order was wrong (when it wasn't) or because the medium steak they ordered is pink. Or because they wanted an extra hot coffee. Or because the food took 5 minutes to arrive.

And yes absolutely in that case they need to shut up because it's entitled, nasty behaviour and you shouldn't eat out if you can't behave. Pulling the misogyny card when called out on this behaviour is pretty pathetic

No one should yell at waiters. We can all agree on that. You still haven't explained, as far as I can see, why we need a special word for women who do it. Are you implying that women behave like this more than men do?

I assume you're not saying that we should all just accept poor service without comment, because that would be silly. We all know it's not usually the waiter's fault if there's something wrong with the food, but they're the one we deal with, so if there's a need to complain, they're going to be the one hearing about it first and trying to resolve the problem. That's just part of the job, isn't it?

No idea if this is the person involved or not but is the suggestion seriously that they think people will know they want to have gender neutral pronouns because it’s on their earrings??

I have no chance. I’m not reading anyone’s earrings! I spend much of my life trying to convince my teenager that really no one is as interested in what they look like as they think they are, and that therefore no one is laughing at them for their spots/shoes/hair etc. This feels entirely like that teenage sense that you are the centre of the world and everyone is scrutinising your every move. Whereas in fact most people are thinking about what they want for dinner and how much petrol they might have. Our brains are designed to make shortcut decisions based on the facts that are most obvious to us to stop us being totally overloaded - what someone’s earrings have written on them is very far down the list of things we’re taking into account.

Can you explain to me why such bad behaviour needs to be given a female name?

philautia · 08/05/2023 19:28

How awful for that customer and how embarrassing for Starbucks. Yet another example of male violence.

Men are men, women are women. I'll never refer to someone by their "preferred pronouns", it's collective insanity.

As I recall the term "Karen" was coined by black Americans to describe a particular type of race- based aggressive or passive aggressive behaviour practised against them by white women, which played on the power imbalance between the 2 races.

SlightlyJaded · 08/05/2023 19:33

Agree with the fantasy thing.

He has been just waiting for a smidgen of something to leap on so that he could make a big public show of attempting to trans-shame someone. In his head, he's a Hero. Fucking arsehole.

Entitled, angry, spiteful twat of a man. You can dress/identify however the fuck you want, but don't kid yourself that you are anything other than an Entitled, angry, spiteful twat of a man. See also: Bully, violent and thick.

I hope Starbucks are being tagged to death on that video and forced to respond. I don't drink their shit coffee anyway but I am about done with the whole TransPass thing from big corporates when it comes to poor behaviour.

Delphinium20 · 08/05/2023 19:33

Exactly. And like so many other things, this was appropriated by toxic white men to shit on women.

OldGardinia · 08/05/2023 19:33

On the whole "Karen" thing: I think it's no big deal that there are gendered insults / descriptions. Men are bastards, women never are. Women can be bitches, men rarely are but can be sometimes, usually little ones. Men are never cows and indeed bull is complimentary; but men are much more often assholes than women. Both sexes equally can be see you next Tuesdays which is odd really.

I guess it arises because men and women see each other on a basic level as Others when it comes to the social grouping level. And a telling point in this is that I've never heard a transwoman called a "stupid cow" so deep down everybody knows what's what.

But all that said, Karen is an actual negative female stereotype rather than just a gender-variant insult of something generic. It's very specifically a woman who complains about service or other people's business. And it's used to dismiss people expecting decent service for their money as often as it is about someone being deliberately awkward. I think I do recall hearing someone referred to as "a male Karen" one time but if anything that just reinforces the point that it doesn't have a good male equivalent.

So maybe both sides can be right on this one.

I have never been treated badly by middle aged women at work. Neither have my younger staff and we work in a customer facing role.

I have faced many older men behaving like entitled pricks though. Talking over me, talking down to me, mansplaining, being blatantly sexist. What male-specific insult should I call them?

DerekFaker · 08/05/2023 19:41

Going to be discussed on GB News tonight. Very embarrassing for Starbucks.
