It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

The sad thing is, that basic insight that society's rigid gender roles attached to sex don't really work is right. It's just instead of realising that gender roles are bollocks for everyone, they've gone down some weird side route of assuming everyone other than them fits a gender norm.

That's exactly what they think.

Which is ironic, when the 'they' in question was acting like the most stereotypical, entitled, aggressive man imaginable, conforming to gender norms with enthusiasm.

'I straight up don't give a fuck about your pronouns.'

I want that on a T-shirt.

The 'straight up' manages to make it so much more dismissive than it would be otherwise.

Dismissive, yet very definite.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2023 11:01

Forgive me being exacting, but does anyone happen to know if it's official that this horror has been sacked?
I'm aware of various claims on Twitter, but wonder if Starbucks themselves have said anything?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2023 11:03

Actually ignore me; I just found it

Apparently Starbucks said "A Starbucks spokesman said: 'The licensee has confirmed that the partner (employee) no longer works at the company. Starbucks has no tolerance for behaviour of this kind and we are very sorry for the experience that this customer had.'"

The Mail Online reported the statement from Starbucks which said this:

A Starbucks spokesman said: 'The licensee has confirmed that the partner (employee) no longer works at the company. Starbucks has no tolerance for behaviour of this kind and we are very sorry for the experience that this customer had.'

I think though that there’s also a lot of right wing Twitter, which has always existed, talking about trans stuff loudly. I am profoundly uncomfortable and resentful that the UK’s #bekind #nodebate stance means that it’s very easy now to align GC voices with the US Conservative right. I disagree with virtually everything they stand for.

Yes, I have noticed that as well.

I haven't RTFT but for everyone amazed that no one stepped in, people don't. I was out for a meal with one of my DC (just about an adult) a couple of years ago in a small but busy restaurant when one customer assaulted another. Aside from the staff (who hustled the assailant out along with her mates, phoned the police etc), the only customers who got involved were a woman who started filming the incident (turned out she had safeguarding experience or something, we had a chat), me, and my DC. The staff clearly needed help as the assailant was trying to get back in.

Everyone else - maybe 12/15 people - just sat there like lummocks.

I worked for a short while in a cafe. I had a red in the face, angry man shouting at me for some perceived wrongdoing. Yelling. The whole room sat and stared and said not one word. Not even afterwards. Not even the staff I worked with. I still can't believe it. I was so shaken I left to cry for a bit then returned and did the professional bit, did his bill etc. Never in a million years thought about arguing back or responding in kind or I'd have surely faced the sack. That's the reality of hospitality. I was hoping Starbucks would sack this person but surprised they did in fact do so and so quickly. I think the Bud Light message has sunk home in business across the west tf.

I got called a Karen recently by a young male in my 90% male history group. He was pissed off I corrected him about historical nomenclature.
He picked on the wrong lesbian.
Gentle reader he was kicked out.
I don't put up with that sexist anti-age crap.

Please tell us more!

Hearing other people’s stories of standing up for themselves helps me find my own spine when necessary.

EdithStourton · 09/05/2023 11:27

@BlooDeBloop I'm sorry that happened to you.
That event made me re-evaluate my view of the general public.

TheaBrandt · 09/05/2023 11:30

Look what happened the last time the police turned a blind eye to crimes committed against women by a minority group because it was awkward (Rotherham)

Are men a "minority group" ?

The tall young man, towering over a middle aged woman, was intimidated by her? Because she was standing her ground?

How dare a woman not immediately bow down to a young man?

clearly intimidating him by not acquiescing to his bullying and threatening behaviour

how dare she stand up for herself

TheaBrandt · 09/05/2023 11:40

No but the men from the Pakistani community were

Florissante · 09/05/2023 11:50

I am glad that someone explained the significance of both the clapping and the earrings.

Sorry, World, but I'm not going to read your pronouns badge or your earrings. You'll just have to learn to deal with it.

ArtemisDance · 09/05/2023 11:56

I haven’t read the thread as it’s pretty long now. Just came in to say I’ve been served by this guy in Southampton. Can’t be sure it was the same branch but definitely Southampton. It was over a year ago (I was just passing through). I remember it distinctly as I was with my teenage daughter and afterwards she nervously asked me if the person was male or female. I gave a live and let live type answer.

He really stood out as an attention seeking type, tall, with coloured hair and generally had a look at me vibe. I remember wondering how the other members of staff felt about working with him, they were petite females. I felt intimidated by him at the time to be honest. This news story doesn’t surprise me, only surprised he lasted so long with Starbucks.

YouJustDoYou · 09/05/2023 11:57

As I read on another news site, "Most women know full well what a man can get like if he's told something he doesn't want to hear". This one was displaying prime aggressive, violent example. And I bet the police will do absolutely nothing about the assault.

They aren’t "your" (their) pronouns are they? They are third person pronouns, used to refer to him or her. I can’t claim ownership of the pronouns someone (first person) uses to refer to me (third person) when talking to someone else (second person). I know you understand this, but TRAs don’t appear to.

This. Presumably, your pronouns are “I/me/my”. They are the words you use to talk about yourself, and you control those words. You don’t get to control the pronouns that others use to describe you when not addressing you directly because that’s compelled speech. You can ADVISE on your preferred third-person pronouns by wearing a badge or dangly earrings or whatnot. But it’s pretty self-centred to expect anyone to notice this in a busy coffee shop when they just want to get served and pay for their goods with no fuss.

waterlego · 09/05/2023 12:12

@hotdiggetydog claiming they see two women in the video- without knowing the gender identity of either person- is an absolute classic 😂 This is what happens when people blindly follow an ideological position because they’ve been told to and they’re too scared to do otherwise, only to discover they don’t understand the rules.

Free yourself @hotdiggetydog!

As he was running towards the camera does she say “you spat in my coffee”?????

I don't think she ever got a cup of coffee (but I could be wrong), I don't think she got her money back either

Tallisker · 09/05/2023 12:23

I already avoided Starbucks because of their disgraceful behaviour during 9/11, charging emergency workers for water until a massive backlash against them made them change their behaviour. Then the Mermaids sponsorship and pushing the 'born in wrong body' narrative, now this. I never buy Starbucks and never will.

No-one intervenes. Everyone films. No-one intervenes. Life is just a movie or soap opera to so many.

Yep, the very same people who charged for water, also keep their taps running 24/7.

How many more reasons do we need to ditch them?

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 09/05/2023 12:28

I wonder what part Starbucks sacked them for? The shouting and intimidating the woman, or the aggression to the man filming it? I wonder if they would have been sacked if the later part hadn't happened?

I think she might consider the money lost on her MocchaLatteChaiBlahBlah was very well spent since the result of her order wasn't getting the tasteless coffee but the immolation of this maniac.
