Just posting this as on a thread elsewhere I made some disparaging remarks that the debate will be shuffled off to some small committee room.

But they must think that more than a few MPs are wanting to take part as I have just seen it will be in Westminster Hall.

Will be interesting to see which MPs are willing to state views about the reality of biological sex in public!

Event will be broadcast live.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 19:28

Dodds. I'll be interested to see if she sticks to her recent claim that sex is biological.

Sorry if this is a stupid Q...but is there a vote at the end of this that will either allow the govt to keep the guidance as is, or oblige a change along the lines the ECHR advises?

Or is this simply a talking shop?

ACatCalledPushka · 12/06/2023 19:28

Neale Hanvey in the background.

nobody really knows. They might decide to change the law. Or not.

Hello I'm from the other thread. Re possible outcomes:

If the debate finishes before its scheduled end time, the Chair puts the question and asks MPs to decide on the motion. The motion is almost always agreed. There can’t be a vote in Westminster Hall, so if MPs shout “No” when the Chair puts the question, the Chair reports the fact to the House and the question is undecided. It’s possible for the question subsequently to be put to the House for decision without further debate (in the past the Backbench Business Committee has found time for this), but it doesn’t automatically follow that this will happen.

The rules for the Backbench Business Committee debates are very interesting an not what might be expected. They are structured debates with MPs only getting x amount of time. So it always looks poorly attended but many watch from their offices. I first learned about it for the Backbenchers debate in Sept 2016. Emotional speeches - all day - but so few MPs in the house. It did look odd.

Kirsty Blackman genuinely makes me embarrassed to be Scottish.

BellaAmorosa · 12/06/2023 19:30

Should Kirsty Blackman be following Tribunal Tweets during a live parliamentary debate?
