Adult son's voting intentions-a little shocked.

My son lives in Rosie Duffield constituency. We live in a nearby constituency where they weigh the Conservative votes rather than count them. I've been reminding him that he really must get on the electoral register where he lives-he's a very political person and a vociferous left winger. He's been putting it off-he still uses this as his permanent address. Yesterday he finally told me that he's intending to stay on the register here and vote for a local independent. He says that while he couldn't actually vote Tory, he'd rather the Tory candidate won than Duffield. I am quite shaken by this!

His choice. We don’t all agree with everyone’s political choices.

Sux2buthen · 30/04/2023 12:01

He's making his choice, good for him.

Nimbostratus100 · 30/04/2023 12:03

you have brought him up to be independent minded! Now he is making his own decisions - as is his right. and is open to discussing with you too! he sounds great

Babdoc · 30/04/2023 12:05

What are his reasons for that, OP?
If he won’t vote for Duffield because she is Labour, and he can’t support a party that wants to trash women’s rights (I know she is gc, but she is in a vilified minority in the LP) then I say good for him!

This!

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/04/2023 12:11

So he's a "vociferous left winger" who won't vote for Labour because the candidate is Rosie Duffield. He'd "rather the [right-wing] Tory candidate won than [left-wing]Duffield".

He's really not left-wing at all then, is he, if he'd rather the Tory won than Labour, regardless of the candidate. He's a men's rights hypocrite. I can understand you being shocked.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 12:13

He sounds like an idiot OP. RD is supposed to be a very good constituency MP isn't she? Plus she is brilliantly GC and we need more of her.

TidyDancer · 30/04/2023 12:16

He sounds quite confused. Is he permanently living away from the family home? Sounds like he shouldn't be on the register where you are anyway.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 12:28

Yes- of course he has to make his own choices. But he feels he can't vote for Duffield because she is a TERF. Incidentally, he is neither an idiot or a Men's Rights Activist!

Ah, I see.

He's a Progressive, and probably like a lot f young people, actually not very independent at all, very much under the sway of group-think.

This seems to be a very powerful thing among younger people now, I blame their authoritarian educations which discourage thinking and emphasis capitulation to a rigid set of supposed social justice principles.

It is shocking when you see it, but not so much when you stop and think about the extent to which they have been indoctrinated in the 13 or so years of their schooling.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 12:35

@DemiColon To be honest, his education wasn't like that at all. And we certainly worked very hard to encourage critical, independent thinking.

What sort of education did he have?

Boiledbeetle · 30/04/2023 12:44

@CurlewKate if he's still registered at yours and you don't agree with him, don't give him his voting card and tell him to sort out his change of address in time for the general election next year.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 12:57

@Boiledbeetle He still uses this as his permanent address. I'm fine with that- and I don't intend to change it because I don't agree with him on a point of principle!

The irony of dismissing anyone who doesn’t agree with your narrative as being “under the sway of group-think”…

PortiasBiscuit · 30/04/2023 12:59

Labour have totally put me off by posters suggesting Rishi Sumsk actively supports paedophiles. We don’t need that US style shit here.
No idea who to vote for..

The problem with encouraging critical, independent thinking is that sometimes your children have the audacity to think differently to you.

I agree. How we vote is entirely our business. It's possible your local Independent candidate is the best one for your constituency but whatever, it is only one vote.

I wouldn't go that far. I don't like the Tory government one bit and would never vote for them but it has to be said there are and have been some good Tory MPs by which I mean accessible and sympathetic to their constituents.

That was incredibly nasty, I'd go as far as saying it was Trump-like, however it was widely condemned by many Labour Party members. I doubt it will happen again.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 30/04/2023 13:10

There will be a lot of young people who won't vote for Duffield, because a lot of young people really don't agree with us on the trans / women's rights debate.

If you're surprised by this then you need to engage with your kids more on this topic. DD has a trans best friend, and despite loving HP has been whinging about JKR recently. She was rather surprised when I didn't agree with her and we had a long conversation about it. Shes still somewhat on the fence but is currently listening to The Witch trials of....

If we want our kids to engage critically on this topic, and not just hear their friends opinions, then we need to talk to them. Especially sons, this doesn't affect them directly so we have to open their eyes to how it affects their mothers, their sisters etc.

Alas, you teach them, nuture them, then have to let them out into the wild.
