Adult son's voting intentions-a little shocked.

My son lives in Rosie Duffield constituency. We live in a nearby constituency where they weigh the Conservative votes rather than count them. I've been reminding him that he really must get on the electoral register where he lives-he's a very political person and a vociferous left winger. He's been putting it off-he still uses this as his permanent address. Yesterday he finally told me that he's intending to stay on the register here and vote for a local independent. He says that while he couldn't actually vote Tory, he'd rather the Tory candidate won than Duffield. I am quite shaken by this!

They could have @CremeEggQueen but they’d be talking crap. Being same sex attracted is nothing to do with LARPING as a woman

Sidestepping my point that just because you know of being trans, doesn't mean that you're going to automatically want to be trans yourself.

It's a small set of steps from believing that women and men are defined by 'gender identity', to questioning one's own 'gender identity', to starting to believe that you mustn't be a woman/man (whichever depending on your sex) because you haven't fulfilled a set of sexist stereotypes that are linked to each 'gender identity'.

We can see this because of the popularity of this 'non-binary' fad, which is more and more people doing exactly that.

At least he is going to vote. Good for him for voting. I am hugely disappointed that neither of my adult sons vote. I get so cross when one or the other of them are criticizing the government yet again but won't vote. DH and I always vote even in local elections. My other son has been whinging about potholes for months. I suggested he looks at local priorities for each party then vote. He has this '1 vote wont make a difference anyway' mentality.

People could and have said the same about being gay in the past though.(and some now, not me though, not my belief at all) just pointing out
you get people saying it's a delusion/perversion and this towards trans people is no difference imo.

She said it was a delusion not a perversion. It is. I never heard anyone say being gay was a delusion. They're not comparable. Gay peole demanded equitable access to their own spaces. Some trans people want access to other people's spaces ( I.e. tw in women's spaces).

DeadbeatYoda · 01/05/2023 13:22

I live in a Tory stronghold not far from you OP, however, the independent candidates have done well here in recent years and I'm inclined to vote for them. I could never vote Tory, I am diametrically opposed to them idealogically speaking. These elections are, however, about local matters. I am disgusted with Kier Starmer's utter lack of integrity on too many issues and will probably vote for them with nose held in the GE. but I'm voting indie myself on May 4th.

There's a quote upthread saying exactly that, that it's a perversion.
Exact same arguments used whether towards gay or trans people.

was that from the person you quoted or did you mean to quote someone else? are you talking about AGP? my view with that is knock yourself out with that but always in private. It does not entitle a man to use my spaces. That is not the same argument used against gay people. It was their core right to be gay which was being questioned, not their right to do sex acts in public.

@Laladybird
"the rougher ones headed for the trades"

sorry but that feels hideously snobbish to me 😕

Yes sorry a manual job doesn't make anyone rough.

But apparently in one lesson, the class naughty boy said "okay Miss. I identify as a creep then and it is my right to stand up at the front of class and j* *ff."

Which sums all this up pretty well IMO.

It's much more likely when people start believing in this toxic ideology that they're going to start overthinking themselves into a different 'gender identity'. Also the son might already be an autogynephile if he's sticking up for them.

Ermmmm. I'm not sure to the OP or her son deserves speculation that he is an autogynophile. How did we get to this giant leap of thinking on this post?

Blimey. I thought it was bad enough that the OP's parenting skills were being discussed.

I had to look up 'autogynephile', that's a new one on me. Sounds like a cross between a motor mechanic and an obstetrician. Now I know what it means, I can say I haven't gleaned from the op's post that he is neither, nor an autogynephile.

Yes- of course he has to make his own choices. But he feels he can't vote for Duffield because she is a TERF. Incidentally, he is neither an idiot or a Men's Rights Activist!

Well...then what would you call someone who believes in "TERF" being a single accusation strong enough to prefer the party standing opposite to your entire political beliefs?

Ignorant? Brainwashed?

Is he aware his mum's a TERF?

Zombie thread.

In the US, he could be charged with voter fraud. You have to be registered where you reside.

hellsBells246 · 27/01/2024 22:25

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/04/2023 12:11

So he's a "vociferous left winger" who won't vote for Labour because the candidate is Rosie Duffield. He'd "rather the [right-wing] Tory candidate won than [left-wing]Duffield".

He's really not left-wing at all then, is he, if he'd rather the Tory won than Labour, regardless of the candidate. He's a men's rights hypocrite. I can understand you being shocked.

This!

LauderSyme · 27/01/2024 22:28

[Popped up in my 'I'm on section]

Yes it's a zombie thread but rereading has been interesting as I think public and political discourse may have moved on at least a tiny bit since OP started it. Or do I have that woefully wrong?

Just noticed this is a zombie thread. Wish we could delete posts ourselves.
