Feminism: Sex & gender discussions

BonfireLady · 21/04/2023 06:14

Sounds interesting.

In the article it mentioned a previous series which ended in a live debate back in 2018 called "Genderquake".
I searched that word (both as a single word and split) on this board but it didn't find any matches, which surprised me. That could be a limit of the search facility rather than a lack of thread. I appreciate it's been a while but does anyone recall seeing or being part of one?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was a bit of a shit show. My memory is hazy, but as far as I remember, the producers had the TRA in the middle, and the feminists - who thought the had been invited as guests in their own right - were seated around the edge, more as if an audience.

The producers encouraged them to call out, but when they did, they were seen as being disrespectful / heckling - as the viewers didn't know they'd been encouraged to do this.

There was definitely discussion of it here. I hope old threads aren't being deleted.

Have you tried searching with Google, instead of the Mumsnet search?

”Prior to quitting her role, Stock had called “many trans women still males with male genitalia“, and argued against their inclusion in single-sex spaces”

I’m not sure trying to suggest Kathleen Stock is a terrible bigot based on this statement is going to have quite the effect they’re hoping for.

GCAcademic · 21/04/2023 06:25

Definitely use Google instead of the MN search function - it throws up several threads for Genderquake.

Genderquake was absolutely appalling in every way.

BonfireLady · 21/04/2023 07:04

Thanks all. I've been having a read of the comments on it.

Summary thoughts: a) I'll save myself the time and not watch it, or the series that it was part of b) let's hope Channel 4 have learned a lesson from it. On the one hand, they seemed to unite both sides of the debate, but only in agreement that it was a painful shitshow.

Also this:

She has also argued that self-ID “threatens a secure understanding of the concept ‘lesbian’”, rooting her rhetoric in a belief of immutable biological sex.

I'm sure most people share her belief that sex is immutable.

Hi all

I can't see any mention of when it's airing, does anyone know?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/04/2023 12:10

I'll keep my ears/eyes open then, thanks Smile

@BonfireLady · Today 06:14

I found this thread:

Channel 4's Genderquake Debate is heavily criticised/ boycotted(?) by prominent transgender activists & allies

GenderQuake was indeed a shitshow. Hopefully this one will be better ...

C4 did air this excellent documentary in 2018 with Stella O'Malley. It was called Trans Kids, it's time to talk. Here's the section where she goes to a talk and trans activists storm the building 😬

Look out a fresh faced KJM, Magdalen Berns (RIP), Venice Allan and Miranda Yardley. What a lineup!

Oh wow, that’s really shocking. I love Stella O’Malley, she’s so calm and reasonable, and her own childhood dysphoria gives her gravity most others don’t have. And from 5 years ago, 2018, when I was completely oblivious to all of this stuff!

Is this based around KS or are there going to be more diverse participants? There's many women we don't hear from so much who deserve a platform, and I'd like to see more than just the same few voices (some of whom certainly don't speak for, or in any way represent, ordinary lesbians like me). Otherwise, whilst the principle is sound, I'll give it a miss.

SinnerBoy · 21/04/2023 17:38

Would you think of applying to speak, Louise?

DrLouiseJMoody · 21/04/2023 17:42

Lordy! Probably not (although I can't really complain about the lack of diversity if I don't try and change it, can I?).

What does KS say that you disagree with or you don't think represents ordinary lesbians?

DrLouiseJMoody · 21/04/2023 18:38

KS, as I understand it, endorses political lesbianism and has made a number of remarks that are, quite frankly, offensive to those of us who know our orientation to be innate. Clearly, she's entitled to her views just as I'm entitled to object. That and another Oxbridge educated academic platformed yet again as if there are no other GC lesbians is tedious. I realise she's the obvious go to voice but I know so many women, working hard, helping women on the ground, who are rarely, if ever, acknowledged. It's not KS' fault, I suppose, but a reflection of the classist society we live in. As I say, it's great a documentary like this is being made but, absent more diversity, I'll skip.

MissPollysFitDolly · 21/04/2023 18:42

Thanks, that's fair enough. I'd like to hear what KS has to say but I agree, the more voices the better.
