Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

I have an old Nike sports bra that would be perfect to post back to them.

So one hectare of forest fire produces 170 tonnes of CO2. This is 68.83 tonnes of CO2 per acre of forest fire.

Transporting 1 tonne of clothing from London Heathrow to Portland Airport (Nike head office is in Beaverton, Oregon outside Portland Oregon) creates 13.33 tonnes of CO2, not even including the CO2 emissions of transport to LHR from all over the U.K.

Posting 5.16 tonnes of clothing = 1 acre of forest fire.

So if 800 women sent 13lbs of clothing…that’s 1 acre of forest fire in CO2 emissions. That’s less weight than you’d put in a carryon bag.

You can see why I don’t want this to happen.

Much appreciated - but please include links to your sources so that what you say can be verified.

Although the energy needed for a single internet search or email is small, approximately 4.1 billion people, or 53.6% of the global population, now use the internet. Those scraps of energy, and the associated greenhouse gases emitted with each online activity, can add up.

The carbon footprint of our gadgets, the internet and the systems supporting them account for about 3.7% of global greenhouse emissions, according to some estimates. It is similar to the amount produced by the airline industry globally, explains Mike Hazas, a researcher at Lancaster University. And these emissions are predicted to double by 2025.

That is not taking into account the human cost in mining for heavy metals, and transporting those heavy metals. Do you care enough to go offline?

Cailleach1 · 09/04/2023 16:14

Stop tempting the poster to do more internet clicks. If taken at their word, I'm sure the @L3ThirtySeven doesn't want to be a source of more environmental problems.

Yes, silicon is a natural chemical element.
Have a wee look at the periodic table my lovely. It’s #14 and goes by Si.

Breast implants are made of siliconE. This is a polymer made in large part from silicon plus water and methanol. Breast implants are not in any way biodegradable. Silicone takes about 500 years to break down.

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 15:33

I would just advocate that we protest in an environmentally responsible way.

So you have a different plan?
Let's hear it.

MerlinsLostMarbles · 09/04/2023 12:44

If anyone is inciting a hate mob against a company could this amount to criminality?

No, a hate mob is the groups of TRAs beating up Riley Gaines and trapping her in a room while shouting that they'll let her out if she pays them, or throwing drinks on Posie Parker and trying to grab her while she tries to get away.

Putting some clothes in an envelope and posting them to a company is a message.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 09/04/2023 16:36

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 15:36

Yes, that would be an environmentally responsible way to dump used Nike wear at their head office. So long as you recycle the plastic bags you carry the stuff in.

Ah well I thought the plan was
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle.

So maybe use a rucksack to carry the Nike stuff. Then no plastic to reuse or recycle.

Am of course assuming you will be twittering, emailing , writing to Nike to make damn sure they recycle all the used goods they are about to receive.

Trying to grab her? That would be assault. Source?

EmotionalSupportHyena · 09/04/2023 16:40

I think we are supposed to stay at home, quietly knitting our own replacements until our Nike gear wears out, at which point we can enact a boycott by quietly not buying any replacements?

nilsmousehammer · 09/04/2023 16:43

MerlinsLostMarbles · 09/04/2023 16:40

Trying to grab her? That would be assault. Source?

Yes.

Plus hitting her twice.

Assault.
Trapping her in the building
Attempting to extort money
Demanding that the police hand her over
Trapping her and a group of police in the building for hours, who were forced to barricade themselves in during their attempt to protect her from the raving mob

You could take prosecutable offenses and go nuts with the crime sheet really, a lot of boxes got ticked.

The sources are very easily available on the threads here and on Google. Including a newspaper interview with Gaines.

Seen it. All the people around her were her own security.

And before anyone says she had a "knife" or a "TRA's hand" on her neck, this is old news that has been debunked. (It's a phone and the hand of her security).

https://www.aap.com.au/factcheck/no-knife-was-not-held-to-posie-parkers-throat-during-nz-protest/

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/04/2023 17:38

So you've literally watched a woman having to be surrounded by security because a crowd of people are trying to get to her, and you don't believe that a woman had to be surrounded by security because a crowd of people were trying to get to her.

I think you've just proven your level of intelligence to everyone on this thread.

Hey @EmotionalSupportHyena the above is for you, apparently breast implants do not have silicon in them like you thought. Cheers x

Ooh I know this one!

That didn't happen
And if it did, it wasn't that bad
And if it was, it wasn't their fault
And if it was, they didn't mean it
And if they did
Then she deserved it.

Ah whataboutery at its finest. Let’s justify the completely unnecessary posting tons of junk to the other side of the world to protest a corporations adverts by saying that email is bad for the environment too. Guess what, an email complaint to Nike is far more environmentally friendly than posting a few kilos of used gym gear.

I provided a source, which, if you’d bothered to read it, would make it clear my missing ‘e’ was just a typo.

You DID read it, right?

You won’t shame us into agreeing with you.

You should lead by example and save on your electric.

Shame you can’t click links. Must make being online difficult for you?

My solar panels cover my electric…in fact today I was a net contributor to the national grid. Perhaps I have even provided the electricity you are using to argue with me?

God, I love not having an electric bill but an electric payment every month!

Mistakes are in the writer, not the reader. Hth.
