Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

I would just advocate that we protest in an environmentally responsible way.

So I can ride my bike to HQ and dump all this shite on them in person then? Is that ok with you?

EmotionalSupportHyena · 09/04/2023 15:33

Women! Do not express anger at insulting adverts! Remember your female socialisation!

🤦‍♀️

Expressing anger is fine. Just not doing things that damage the planet out of anger that is not fine. It’s no different from deciding you’re going to start a forest fire because you’re angry.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 09/04/2023 15:35

I've not long spent £230 on trainers unfortunately. No way I'm sending them back and loosing my money.

However, the thousands I do spend a year in running stuff - can be spent elsewhere from now on.

If anyone is inciting a hate mob against a company could this amount to criminality?

I’d doubt it, if rape and death threats towards a children’s author don’t seem to.

Yes, that would be an environmentally responsible way to dump used Nike wear at their head office. So long as you recycle the plastic bags you carry the stuff in.

What is your source for this please?

It's been an issue for years.

As for whether this is inciting hate against a company, Nike have been at the centre of boycotts and protests since the 1990s when they used child labour. I think they can cope

Where do your old clothes go?

The 'hidden world' of the second-hand clothing trade.

Seeing as you’re as GC as they come and so passionate about the environment.

Maybe you could start your own thread l: How To Boycott Nike The Ethical Way?

Look forward to it!

If hundreds of women send Nike gear through the post the excess CO2 emissions would equal a small forest fire. The more women, the bigger the fire equivalent.

raspberrywine · 09/04/2023 15:40

This thread is bonkers.

Posting back gear is hate?

Why would police be interested in women posting back Nike wear?

What do Twitter responses to Sharron Davis have anything to do with mumsnet?

The environment is more important than women's rights? Polar bears matter more?

I assume pro polar bears are doing their bit by not having children, travelling or heating their house. Also, we can hold more than one thought in our brain, you know. This is women's rights board so there's many of us who prioritise this before anything else.

We don't do Nike in our house but have will definitely feedback to them. Thanks OP and the others for suggestions.

That thread has already been done. It’s quite simple: Stop buying from Nike.
Dispose of any Nike gear in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner which means wear it until it is worn out or donate to charity.

That is actually the definition of a boycott.

Obviously I will be carrying them in sackcloth (and ashes) to appease the righteous 🙄

In other news I am looking into Saysh for next purchases…

Sew over the branding with a dinosaur if you can't afford to replace it

That’s a great idea. I’ve already nearly made a hole in my gardening jacket ( ex running) trying to get the logo off.

I think I’ll try to make an adult human female patch.

Since they're internationally not particularly bothered apparently by fractured skulls, screaming mobs kettling and exorting money/hostage holding/ or mobs carrying around placards with death and rape threats on them, I doubt women sending clothing back and talking politely to shop employees/leaving negative tweets is really going to be of much interest to the police.

Not so sure. There’s criminal violence and then there’s wrong think. We can guess which one Plod has been instructed to take notice of.

As you are well aware, you do a lot more harm to the environment every single day by using a car or using the internet to type that insanity.
If it wasn't for other women fighting for your rights, you wouldn't have any power to do any of the things you take for granted.
Assuming you are female and not a troll ....

I’ve not really had a chance to look yet but as far as I can tell in the US they are sold by Athleta (Felix’s
sponsor) which is co owned by Gap, and both John Lewis and Next sell Athleta in the U.K.
JL are already in the tervern shit bin but we could write to Next and request they look into being a UK supplier? There are loads of us about now.

Alternatively we could try and fashion our own high performance sports shoes out of used egg boxes and sellotape, keep the polar bears happy 🤷‍♀️

(I love this thread.)

So one hectare of forest fire produces 170 tonnes of CO2. This is 68.83 tonnes of CO2 per acre of forest fire.

Transporting 1 tonne of clothing from London Heathrow to Portland Airport (Nike head office is in Beaverton, Oregon outside Portland Oregon) creates 13.33 tonnes of CO2, not even including the CO2 emissions of transport to LHR from all over the U.K.

Posting 5.16 tonnes of clothing = 1 acre of forest fire.

So if 800 women sent 13lbs of clothing…that’s 1 acre of forest fire in CO2 emissions. That’s less weight than you’d put in a carryon bag.

You can see why I don’t want this to happen.

I don’t use a car. And all my energy is green tariff, 100% renewable. I also have solar panels. So no I don’t do more damage by posting on MN.

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 16:06

“If it wasn't for other women fighting for your rights”
Im sorry but what influence does Nike have over my rights as a woman? They are a U.S. corporation. They can’t take away or give me any rights. It’s disingenuous to for you and others to suggest that protesting a Nike advert in any way impacts women’s rights.
