Do you know what Nike? Forget about “just do it”, as far as I am concerned you can just do one.

Victoria Wood’s parody is so much more competent, athletic, and aesthetically pleasing than the Mulvaney awfulness. And of course very very funny.

Agree. Victoria is very much missed in our extended family.

Given the apparent disgust and contempt Mulvaney has for women and trans people, it’s astonishing he has such a huge and lucrative profile.

I don’t particularly think he has contempt for women, he’s just tone deaf and looking after number one. He’s a total grifter.

https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/04/12/dylan-mulvaney-nike-backlash-trans-influencer-adidas-new-balance-reebok/

What if I were to reveal all the major sports brands have worked with LGBT+ influencers?

It would show you for who you are really. Someone who will post things without any deeper understanding of what you are posting. It just seems to be the immediate impact you are after.

Anyone reading about the impact of Bud influencer action would be not be crowing about any ‘influencer’ action.

It is a good thing that brands have a wide and diverse range of influencers and ambassadors. Dylan Mulvaney lacks the cut through to many market segments though. It is pointless thinking someone who is trending is going to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Particularly older audiences who expect authenticity.

Any brand now considering this individual really needs to evaluate the potential push back if they are about to attempt to appeal to women using a male who identifies as trans. A male who is trans is great to appeal to a particular audience, however a female target segment is not the correct audience and it simply never was.

It was also April fools day when that advert was released.

I'm still waiting for DM to announce this was a joke that got out of hand. I mean, no-one could be this ridiculous in their parody of women, could they?

The other issue with the American backlash is that this is going to look like solely a right-wing/conservative issue: rednecks don't like anyone who is different and they're going to go round shooting pallets of beer in retaliation. I'm not sure all this comes across as we might hope it does, not least because it risks lumping women's rights campaigners in with intolerant right-wingers?

Well as we are already branded right wing, I cant bring myself to care. This slur would only hit the mark if it was true.

I'm not sure cos I'm not American, nor drink bud, but it's not only sold in redneck country?

And finally, I'm not the rednecks mum, so nothing I can do about it.

No Dylan no cry

TRAs boycott Hogwarts Legacy and it becomes one of the fastest selling games of all times.

A TRA ends up on the face of a beer can and they lose 6 billion dollars.

Make of that what you will.

*“I am rather happy that Bud have had 3bn wiped off their share price, I hope it continues to fall.

Next stop Nike.”*

3 Billion?
GOOD!
Should not be insulting women by parodying them.

As others have said, How would it go down if a woman was chosen to endorse a product as a “Male”, and was using Male stereotypes like burping, farting, man-spreading, wolf whistling?
It wouldn’t be appreciated by men, surely?

I think the equivalent would be a transman acting out being a shit dad for laughs. Our being a crap partner who is lazy and dgaf.

The point is that someone born of the opposite sex is portraying gender stereotypes that are actively being pushed back on.

I want my daughter to see a portrayal of strong, capable women in sport. Not a clearly non-athletic person mincing about pretending to do high kicks. It's ridiculous.

It does remind me of the Yardley brand attempting to appeal to a new market in the 1990s. Failed to attract new customers in meaningful numbers, alienated their existing customer base. Went into receivership.

It was taught to us as an example of how not to market a brand in uni.

Completely off topic but I absolutely love Yardley, lavender and lily of the valley are my favourite and I am very loyal to the brand - nothing else would really do.

Please please don't get DM to advertise. Please.

Beowulfa · 14/04/2023 09:24

I like to think this was masterminded by a journalist writing a feature on advertising culture who infilitrated the team to see what was the most ludicrous self-defeating ad they could create....

So the brief is to sell sports bras to women. Let's do the following:

-employ someone who is neither a sportsperson nor a woman
-take the piss out of women doing sport

Looking forward to Private Eye's adland column picking up on it.

Badbudgeter · 14/04/2023 09:47

It is incredibly irritating that companies who are trying to appeal to a female market would rather promote a man doing a parody of womanhood. Same thing on IWD. Have the opportunity to promote various excellent female role models or centre a dick in a dress.

Actually rather than "go woke, go broke" I should have pointed out that this should be a lesson in how well paid board members need to pay attention to detail.

Don't let your corporate policy or image be dictated by EDI people or by your social media intern.

So true, the advertising budget is huge for these companies and Budweiser have produced lots of iconic advertising campaigns over the years. Looking at the bud light Super Bowl commercial you can see they are trying to market to women, successfully Imo. Then you undo it all because someone feels inclusivity= trans despite them making up a tiny part of the market. I think they need to run a cohesive campaign.

Datun · 14/04/2023 13:29

There you go, although they're blaming a lacky, they're still not apologising. They've lost six bloody billion dollars, and counting, and they're still too fucking petrified to say sorry.

On the plus side, I guarantee no other big brand will be asking Dylan to decrease their sales for them.

AlisonDonut · 14/04/2023 13:41

I've been zooming round the you tube alpha male response and the key upset is that because Mulvaney is influencing kids, and advertising beer to kids is a bad thing, that's why they are upset.

Who knew it would be beer that turned the tide? You can mess with children's health and remove their genitals but don't mess with frat boys' weak beer.

Don't let your corporate policy or image be dictated by your...social media intern.

I think this is a big part of it. CEOs/board members tend, by definition, to be older, and even if that "older" is 30s/40s it's still not teens/20s where marketeers often see their target demographic for anything trendy (or that they'd like to be seen as trendy). So they look to their junior members of staff for guidance on the basis that "Well, they'll have their finger on the pulse of what the kids are doing nowadays" and they will understand how social media works and...this sort of thing happens.

<wanders off muttering that in her day no-one gave a shit what the junior staff thought>

AliceOlive · 14/04/2023 17:20

I think a huge problem is the internet giving an unmoderated microphone and amplifier for the masses. Also the rapid cultural changes that has caused.

I do wonder also, why must we be kind to everyone when everyone is not kind to us?
Do you think DM cares how women and girls are effected about this theatrical portrayal of women?

I’ve been wondering what exactly non-feminists and non-women are saying is the problem.

I saw the Joe Rogan headlines then dig into what he really meant. He said this DM is so silly we that he couldn’t even be bothered to care. Which is a big difference from how the media was framing his comments in the headlines.

Well, Joe Biden invited Mulvaney to the White House and Forbes to a conference about young women as a speaker, Kamala Harris sent Mulvaney a letter of congratulations for having been a pre-teen girls for a year.

Looks like pretty strong social support for the parodying performance of being a young girl, how young girls are skipping around, grinning like maniacs, falling over because of fearing bugs and so on, being totally focused on makeup and clothes.

The general disdain of the female sex is something that has become so much clearer in the last five years. Things I thought were never going to happen again (a woman is someone in a dress, high heels, and with long hair and makeup) are returning, and much of this seems to be pushed by the younger generations.
