Kia Ora e hoa!
Ive been off and on MN for over a decade before I get called a troll or something! Newly rejoined.
Im a Maori wahine and I made a complaint to Newshub about this video and their smear about her. Sorry if I missed anyone else updating this thread, but they have now removed their false claim she made a white supremacy gesture and the clip of her is no longer blurred. They did not respond to my complaint or issue an apology though. Newshub is a nothing really, it only exists because it’s government funded, like a lot and I think all now, nz media. I’m embarrassed of our media on a good day but horrified at their behaviour now.
let’s get a reality check about Aotearoa.
it is a deeply deeply misogynistic place, far worse than the UK. I’ve lived long term in both countries. It’s also horrifically racist. The global image of NZ is so far off what it actually is it just frustrates the heck out of me. But trust me, my elderly mum still gets racism on the street and at work. Regularly. The treaty of waitangi has never ever been honoured by the crown or government.
So when we say things like ‘women in NZ’ ‘ kiwi women’ think this or that…. almost always you’ll get someone speaking from a place of privilege on our behalf and completely out of touch with Maori and working class people. I’ve seen the names of people going to the counter protest and it’s a list of self absorbed nobodies who have done nothing for women or their people, who collude with a government that does not and has never properly addressed the contact between us, who actively and persistently pursue policies and laws which ignore Te Ao Maori, ignore the health and wealth disparities and do not address women’s safety and health needs- we have one of if not the highest rates of domestic violence in the developed world. Men who commit acts of violence against women and children usually get away with it, especially if they play one of the top sports.
A large chunk of NZ is unaware of what the self ID laws really mean and completely ignorant of the health concerns around transing children. No media ever give an even slightly negative view of any of this. NZ is small and they do live in a bubble of their own so there’s a huge lack of awareness. But within my own circles, Maori women are very against this in the main, some just go along as we know a lot of women do. They have a huge battle to be heard at all in NZ and are treated worse than in the UK. Most choose silence because they’re scared. This trip of Posies, like when Meghan Murphy visited, will just make more women aware because of the huge campaign against her going on.
Kia Kaha Posie and all the women going, Ani O’Brien and others… you are going to need to be strong to stand what is coming at you and I wish I could be with you. I hope my brothers back home step up to protect you, we are big and we are used to media trashing us and were people telling us what to think.
