Nicola Sturgeon’s final address -I’ve had more toxic abuse over trans rights than any other

Nicola Sturgeon on her final speech as Scottish leader- women should ‘relearn how to disagree’ - it’s a very odd speech which blames the backlash on a very unpopular policy which was being pushed through without the consent of the people.

“I’ve had more toxic abuse, on this issue, much of it from women claiming to care about women’s rights and women’s safety than I have from probably any other issue,” she said.
“All of us need to take a step back and reflect on that.
“We can disagree and obviously do disagree but whether it’s on this issue or other issues, we need to relearn how to disagree in a way that is civilised and respectful and brings a bit of good faith back into some of these debates.”

“There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group.

Yes there is.
What about airport security where we all have to go through processes scanning and our bags, not taking liquids, going through airport security metal detectors because there may be a few terrorist (most likely violent men) who want to harm us.

What about entering a Court or a museum where bags are checked because there might be (violent men) who want to bring in weapons to do harm.

What about protecting women in vulnerable spaces from (violent men) who want to harm them.

It's a SECURITY ISSUE not a RIGHTS issue and if some non violent men have to be treated as though they are a security risk it is because it benefits the majority.

sorry but I do think it is deeper than that @MissLucyEyelesbarrow . I don't require her to be a paragon either, or to not appear however she likes. But the messaging that part of what women do is wear makeup, is part of the problem. I am quite certain that hearing that as a young woman would be firing up neurons telling me to get the hell out of womanhood, and it is happening to other young women I care about right now. It is the phrasing "it is horrible for everyone else" that gets me. I also think it always reveals an underlying psychology into what she thinks the female is, it might give insight into why she won't consider articulate arguments in favour of women. In other words womanhood is a face, something to be worn, something to be put down on an off day.

Rainbowshit · 21/03/2023 12:33

Couldnae mark her neck wi a blowtorch.

Shameless.

I do get that - and agree with your general point. I just think that, in NS's case, she has developed this mind-frame in response to 20 years of misogynistic abuse. You will have gathered from my earlier posts that I am in no way a fan of hers, but - on this point only - I see her as the victim. It's a hell of an ask to expect someone to absorb two decades of vile misogyny directed at her appearance, and not to have internalised that misogyny at the end of it. I think her words probably do reflect how she has been conditioned to think about herself, and that is sad.

terryleather · 21/03/2023 12:34

Women who don't agree with centering the demands and preferences of men are probably sexist, homophobic and quite possibly racist, is that right Nicola, and their concerns are not "valid". Quite happy to have any woman who disagreed with you hounded out of the party and had nothing to say about the threats made against Joanna Cherry.

You cleansed the party of anyone who had an ounce of talent or didn't agree with you in case they threatened your power and stuffed it was third rate no marks and yes men who wouldn't rock the boat, hence the dearth of talent from which to pick your successor. The whole thing's a national fucking embarrassment.

After the covid years standing on your platform spouting off to a gutless supine media, watching you squirm and stutter in the interviews following the Bryson debacle was an utterly delicious pleasure.

Off you fuck Nicola, you won't be missed and I've got plenty of popcorn left for whatever else is going to spill out regarding your tenure...I hope your chickens come home to roost.

Oh and no matter what, #WomenWontWheesht

Angry criticism of a terrible policy (angry because of her dismissal of legitimate concerns) is not 'toxic abuse'

Wait! did she really say this do you think or was this a twist from the reporter?

"There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group."

Because maybe she hasn't realised quite what she has said....

JoodyBlue · 21/03/2023 12:44

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow points taken. I can see what you are saying. It is sad and I can feel for her on a personal level. But I think as a politician it is an issue to see that internalised mysogyny redirected at the populace, particularly the youngsters. But, we are all human. I take the point!

Precipice · 21/03/2023 12:44

I haven't seen the Loose Women clip, but going off this thread, I agree that the two things are linked. If it's 'horrible for everyone else' (!!!) when women don't wear make-up, because women aren't making themselves 'prettier' and aren't showing that they accept that it's their role as women to concern themselves with what men think of them, as they should, but instead just existing as women as men are allowed to do; and it's horrible and toxic abuse for women to refuse to go along with the idea that you can identify as a woman and that this identification should trump the category of sex every time, both are about women refusing to accept that it's their role as women to concern themselves with what men think and fall in line with men's conception of the world and to facilitate making life as pleasant for men as they can. It's about women standing up for their rights as full and not secondary human beings.

guinnessguzzler · 21/03/2023 12:48

So glad to have you here with us @RealFeminist especially at this very busy and emotional time for you 😂

She absolutely is out of step with public opinion on this one, she just didn't realise because of #nodebate. Over the last weekend I discovered two fellow terfs in my wider work network and with both it was thanks to this nonsense that we were able to start the conversation. Working in the Scottish voluntary sector, people do not feel able to talk about this stuff but the comments are starting and soon they won't stop. It is 100% her own doing.

"the inability to be recognised for who they are.”

Nicola - every time you refuse to say what a woman is, YOU ARE DOING THIS TO WOMEN.

Quite.

And this is also the woman who invented rapist gender, because she wouldn't recognise a person for who they said they were or who they actually were!!

She had to invent an identity for them !

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/03/2023 12:56

I am increasingly realising how absolutely abusive and toxic some people are

Sturgeon’s DARVO seems entirely in character

good riddance

Skyellaskerry · 21/03/2023 13:00

I would love to know the reasons that former SNP members give for leaving or not renewing their membership.

It's straight out of the TRA playbook. Why punish us all by what a few miscreants do.

We're harmless.

She hasn't listened and she's not listening still.

She can't possibly think she was not out of step with the public. Or She's clearly never read a btl comment, ever.

TrashyPanda · 21/03/2023 13:01

women claiming to care about women’s rights and women’s safety

she is a fucking disgrace.

in NSs mind, she is the only woman allowed a voice.
the rest of us should just shut up.

Face it, hen - you fucked up big time. Take responsibility for that, don’t blame the women who are fighting for women’s rights. And then ask yourself why we are having to fight for our rights in a so-called civilised country.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/03/2023 13:01

Fuckity bye, Nicola.

TrashyPanda · 21/03/2023 13:05

There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group

Ah, the old lie.

that would be the group of men imprisoned for rape, torture and murder who then claim to be trans?

they have no rights to be in women’s prisons. They are not being denied anything. Unless Nicola thinks preventing them raping women is a denial of their “rights”.

nilsmousehammer · 21/03/2023 13:25

Prove it love. Get out the quotes. Show the screen shots.

Women can pull out hundreds and hundreds of death threats, rape threats, obscene drawings, appalling abuse - which incidentally you personally did fuck all about while tucking male rapists into women's prisons and effectively providing female prisoners as a buffet for them -

where's your 'toxic abuse'?

Let's check. Because I'll bet it was women saying 'no' and telling you you were no feminist.

nilsmousehammer · 21/03/2023 13:27

There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group

Oh for goodness sake Nicola, yes of course we bloody do!

It's a group called 'men' who are denied access to female only spaces (or did until you and your ilk fucked around with it)

It's a group called 'everyone applying for a job involving a position of trust over vulnerable people who needs a DBS'.

There are MANY situations, many safeguarding related, where the behaviour of some means access denied to all of that group.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2023 13:27

It seems our ‘No’ is equal to their ‘decapitate them’

Idiocy.

This stuff really helps you see it in many public figures.

Now when they talk you translate to - this is their sub councious they refuse to listen to -so they shout at us instead of themselves.

It's quite revelling and entertaining, what Angela Rayner is getting up to is a cracker in particular, every time she opens her mouth shouting at women or Tories she is telling you all about her.

Apply it to David Lammy and you work out that he is angry that he is a hoarder (anyone seen his house or bank account?) and an extinct old dinosaur that his ideas are dying out, you can then start to laugh at them.
