Nicola Sturgeon’s final address -I’ve had more toxic abuse over trans rights than any other

Nicola Sturgeon on her final speech as Scottish leader- women should ‘relearn how to disagree’ - it’s a very odd speech which blames the backlash on a very unpopular policy which was being pushed through without the consent of the people.

“I’ve had more toxic abuse, on this issue, much of it from women claiming to care about women’s rights and women’s safety than I have from probably any other issue,” she said.
“All of us need to take a step back and reflect on that.
“We can disagree and obviously do disagree but whether it’s on this issue or other issues, we need to relearn how to disagree in a way that is civilised and respectful and brings a bit of good faith back into some of these debates.”

It came as the outgoing SNP leader said she would argue she was “not out of step” with the country around the issues of trans rights and the gender recognition act.

Eh??

“I’ve sat in rooms with young trans kids talking to me about wanting to kill themselves because of the stigma and the discrimination and the inability to be recognised for who they are.”

Christ. She genuinely doesn't get it. Perhaps she should fucking read the cass report?

Sturgeon was also asked if she regretted her handling of trans rapist Isla Bryson, a convicted rapist placed in a women’s prison.

“These are tough issues, but they are issues fundamentally about basic human rights,” she said.

“There is no other group in society where we take the behaviour of a tiny minority and use it to deny rights to that group.

Yes there is, you dingbat. We don't give men the right to access all areas where women are vulnerable because some of them will assault those women.

That's why they don't get that 'right.

She has no fucking idea what she's talking about. J. K. Rowling is right.

Did she really say that? Is she utterly thick? Oh the irony.

vinoandbrie · 21/03/2023 10:54

She is just so awful! Good riddance to her.

Musomama1 · 21/03/2023 10:56

She ought to talk to JK Rowling.

Hepwo · 21/03/2023 10:56

You can understand the instinct people have to deflect the blame onto others but when it's the first minister doing it, you wonder why such poor behaviour isn't recognised as a problem.

Nicola like Prince Harry is just a memory recall linguist reading scripts.

She’s tying herself up in verbal knots in her utter determination to defend herself on this issue as she tries - and fails - to prove she’s right and the majority of the country is wrong. Hmmm - sounds v familiar...
A fascinating insight into her approach to governing - no wonder we’re in the mess we’re in.

And her selfishness in not caring that this is going to make life harder for HY - her anointed successor - with the wider electorate, and possibly the SNP membership too (depending on whether we think there's anyone left in the party who cares about women's rights, after the mass exodus).

I honestly would not have believed that there was any issue on which a majority of the Scottish public (even pro-union ones) would have backed Tory Westminster interfering with a Holyrood decision. But NS managed that with the GRR bill. Yet she chooses to double-down and remind the public why they are angry with the SNP.

It's never been about what's right for Scotland. It's only ever been about her.

readsalotgirl63 · 21/03/2023 11:18

Who was it who said those opposed to GRR were transphobic/homophobic/bigots who were also probably tories/brexit supporters and racists ?
Oh right - that would be you Nicola. So how's that "civilised and respectful" ?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/03/2023 11:19

“I’ve sat in rooms with young trans kids talking to me about wanting to kill themselves because of the stigma and the discrimination and the inability to be recognised for who they are.”

Nobody would ever want kids to feel this way or to be treated nastily, with stigma or discriminatorily, but if a young male person is genuinely feeling suicidal at being expected to use the male toilets, I would gently suggest that there is a lot of vulnerability there that needs compassionate help and care, far beyond and in no way addressed by any automatic decision to take basic human rights away from other people in order to add them on to the (same) existing ones that the vulnerable person already has.

Of course sex-based facilities are 'discriminatory' on one level: with the exception of very young children with their parent, NO male is allowed in the women's facilities; equally NO female is allowed in the men's facilities - but there ARE facilities for everybody.

Differentiation in this way is only a bad thing when it leaves some people with fewer rights than other people; not when they have absolutely equal rights but facilitated in a different (still equal) way that is appropriate to their own circumstances.

Taking it to an absurd level, I can't claim abuse and stigma because there are tens of millions of NI numbers out there that I am being wilfully denied the right to ever use - because each person only needs (and qualifies for) one, meaning that I have my own exclusive one, just like everybody else does; the individual digits are neither here nor there, even if I did decide that I 'should have' a '4' in there somewhere rather than a '9' that 'doesn't truly represent who I am' for some bizarre arbitrary reason.

AmuseBish · 21/03/2023 11:29

Ah, the dishonesty. Never far away, is it?

AmuseBish · 21/03/2023 11:30

"the inability to be recognised for who they are.”

Nicola - every time you refuse to say what a woman is, YOU ARE DOING THIS TO WOMEN.

FrancescaContini · 21/03/2023 11:31

MrsOvertonsWindow · 21/03/2023 09:21

Clasic example of DARVO right there.
And she claims to be a feminist.

My thoughts exactly.

fiendishdragon · 21/03/2023 11:32

Hang on. Is she seriously suggesting that she had serious threats, threats of violence, from "Women claiming to care about women's rights and women's safety"?

Or by 'toxicity' does she just mean 'women disagreeing with me'?

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2023 11:37

It really is ingrained into some that women are less deserved to have a voice.

Even as they trip over the door jamb as they go they can’t reassess.

GottoHandit · 21/03/2023 11:47

She’s just really annoyed that we wouldn’t back down. She thought her seemingly level-headed, no-nonsense delivery style, that gained her some fans in Lockdown, would work to erode away our thinking on this issue. Gosh Nicola you were right all along… of course there's nothing wrong with just ignoring all these men wanting our rights, spaces, opportunities etc… Sure we’re all done with that feminist action now - we can sit down and have lovely women’s business lunches and exchange make-up tips with Phillip(a) our old CEO. All women together.

I was actually moved to tears by that photo of you at the public event where you later admitted that you were going through a miscarriage. Fucking hell Nicola, how can you not understand where we’re coming from? Or do women always have to make the biggest sacrifices in this world?

JoodyBlue · 21/03/2023 11:56

I just saw a clip of Nicola on Loose Women (I know, bad move). She is speaking of a less formal lifestyle now. But she talks of "days when you don't have to put make up on". It sticks in my craw this. If the perception and the communication to an audience is women HAVE TO put make on othewise "it is horrible for everyone else". Some reflection there, on the role modelling she isn't doing to a younger generation would be good. I mean wear make up sure, don't make wear make up, but please don't tell other women that it is "horrible for everyone else" if you choose not to.

RealFeminist · 21/03/2023 11:58

WE HAVE TO COVER UP OUR HORRIBLE WOMANLINESS TO NOT UPSET THE MENFOLK

Bovril2000 · 21/03/2023 11:58

Ah, us pesky women with our concern for women and girls safety.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out there, Nic. Good riddence!

RealFeminist · 21/03/2023 12:00

IVE BEEN THE BEST PROGRESSIVIST NICEST AND KINDEST MINISTER IN THE WORDL AND AH HATE YOU ALL

GottoHandit · 21/03/2023 12:14

I actually think she feels as constricted by the womanly nonsense of make-up and heels as a lot of us but on Loose Women it very much feels as if she’s playing along with all the ‘womanly-ness’ - it feels forced. Trying to be ‘relatable’. Like Tony Blair and all the head-the-ball, keepy-uppey ‘blokey’ role-play he used to indulge in.

I don’t think she’s going to be ditching those power suits any time soon.

Meh, I'd give her a pass on that. She's taken so much stick about her appearance . She laughs along with the Jimmy Cranky stuff, but it must be hurtful.

I don't require her to be some paragon of unimpeachable feminist virtue (even if she does think she is). I just require her not to throw women under the bus, then lie about it.
