Julie Bindel v Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg has tweeted.

Julie Bindel takes to right wing GBNews to smear the trans community with the same trope that was used against gay men in the 1980s - that they are all paedophiles. Has she forgotten that made gays a target for physical violence? Does she care if trans people are now targeted too.

Julie has given him 24 hours to appologise or she will take legal action.

This is the interview

I'm not on Twitter, so didn't accidentally retweet it.

Unfortunately, I accidentally archived it for posterity instead. Oops!

Off topic, but Sylvia Anderson who co-created Thunderbirds (and voiced Lady Penelope among many other characters) died on this day in 2016.

I didn't know about Sylvia Anderson!

Suzanne Moore has written a banger about this. It's utter brilliance, and worth the subscription to her Substack alone!

Leanne’s still in Corrie?!

(misses point of thread)

There's a rude joke about Parker and Lady Penelope. I'm damned if I can recall it.

However I think Bragg would make a fine Parker if a new series was made.

Does it end with 'And don't let me catch you wearing my dress again?'

He is exactly the sort of client not to listen to his solicitor's advice to apologise/settle

Disagree. He is the type who mouths off and enjoys bullying (especially women), but will run away squeaking if he feels he’s in any trouble. There’s no way he would risk his comfy middle-class lifestyle on a point of principle

Good point. 'Paper Tiger' should be the title of his next song.

If you don't want to work your way through Bragg's back catalogue, Bill Bailey nails his style here.

I was born in 1986. Who is Billy Bragg?

Billy Bragg, and John Cooper Clarke, were omnipresent during the early 1980's; at every function or event in aid of one of the predominant protest movements of the time ( CND/Stop the City/Poll Tax). He presented himself as a working class folk-protest singer.

For many people this sort of aspect of their life has become an enduring identity that they are very attached to. Jeremy Corbyn being another. Perpetual student politics and protest of the left wing variety. I imagine they call it integrity and commitment, but I'm not sure that is what it is - more like an inability to let go of outdated conceptual frameworks.

BabyStopCryin · 17/03/2023 08:24

Saw him in 86 at a CND event. Thought he was dreadful - and a fake.

Cooper Clarke - now there was something! DS enjoys his work.

mach2 · 17/03/2023 08:41

John Cooper Clarke is excellent. Evidently Chickentown pretty much describes Britain now.

ArabellaScott · 17/03/2023 09:03

Cooper Clarke is ghastly. Talk about misogynistic!

I used to be a huge Billy Bragg fan, had a poster in the hall of him for years. It's been taken down. I don't care that he disagrees with me on gender identity, it's the dismissal of women's concerns and calling us GC women bigots which I can't bear. Has Julie Bindel said she is going to go ahead and sue him ? I hope she does.

She said she would, if he didn't climb down by a deadline, which he didn't. His tweet, stating that she didn't actually say the things he had accused her of saying, but had implied them, may have been a ham-fisted attempt by him to make her case weaker, but is actually likely to have had the opposite effect, because he has now admitted that the defamatory statement wasn't true.

If JB says she is going to sue someone, she generally does, so I wouldn't read things going quiet as good news for Billy.

AlisonDonut · 17/03/2023 09:56

Billy Bragg has been homophobic for years. His lyrics about 'stick around/maybe find some common ground' with gay people - I've never felt I had to find common ground with gay people. Because I had gay friends the whole way through my life, I didn't view them as an alien species.

How's the common ground now Billy, as you try to get a pile on to lesbians who want to be away from your mysogynistic bleatings? Tosser.

And of course "I won't turn you away" - who is he to put himself in a position of power where he can decide whether or not to turn gay people away? Lord Billy of Bragg!

Can I genuinely ask:
Where have MAPs been incorporated into the lgbtqi soup?
By any particular groups?
Is there a campaign for this?

Just wondering how accepted or mainstream this is becoming?

Acceptance without exception isn't it?

The paedophiles try. Obviously "MAPs" have not been officially recognised by Stonewall or at pride or anything. That would be suicide for the movement.

Will be good to bring it all out into the light.

Age play and nappies seem rather prevalent. Or dressing like a toddler.

Then there was Aimee Challenor and his dad, and the Mermaids Trustee guy who got fired.

Jeffery Marsh is not convicted of anything but his behavior is worrying.

Lots of the incarcerated trans women are in prison for sexual offenses against children.

I think they all consider themselves under the umbrella.

This sums it up for me. Shovel at the ready.

As an aside reading through the Twitter thread there are a number of people calling Julie a ‘political lesbian’ or ‘identifies’ as a lesbian is shocking especially as she details the abus she has had growing up and coming out. It does show the lack of arguments they have though in that they have to lie to try to undermine her.

I think the people calling Julie a political lesbian part comes from the fact she frequently say things such as "all women can be lesbians," when, frankly, they can't. They are getting mixed up with the fact that Julie is not a political lesbian but she often espouses political lesbian ideology.

Billy Bragg is a proper knobend tho...
