Billy Bragg has tweeted.

Julie Bindel takes to right wing GBNews to smear the trans community with the same trope that was used against gay men in the 1980s - that they are all paedophiles. Has she forgotten that made gays a target for physical violence? Does she care if trans people are now targeted too.

Julie has given him 24 hours to appologise or she will take legal action.

Julie said she didn't want to be lumped in with MAPs, from this bragg made the massive leap/link that Julie was talking about transpeople.

In a later tweet bragg concedes that Julie didn't say what he claimed, but it was a transphobic dig whistle and he knew what Julie really meant.

Which ever way you cut that up, it's a win/win for Julie. Personally I'd like to see it hammered out in court, distressful tho that is.

I'd like to see an unequivocal definition of the 'plus'.

Does it include furries, pups, 'littles'?

When institutions fly the rainbow flag, are they advocating for and supporting fetishists? Those who wander around pride with butt plugs and getting pats from children? Are they approving of drag queens entertaining children? Do they approve of the outfits? Prosthetic breasts, thongs, the nipple tassels, the twerking?

Which bits are they promoting? Or condemning?

I’m loving how, when an older woman in that thread says she doesn’t have a lot of money but she’ll happily contribute to Julie’s campaign if needed, it brings out sooo many whiny little tossers claiming Julie’s a grifter. So funny. They hate when we have disposable income to spend how ever we fucking well please. I’m not particularly vocal in real life but I do have a fair bit of disposable to spread around. And as far as I’m concerned if it doesn’t get spent on the intended purpose of the original crowdfunder, the recipient is then free to spend it on wine, doughnuts and takeaways. The rest, they can waste.

I don't think any case would need to go there, tbh.

It is incontrovertibly true that BB did accuse Julie Bindel of saying something that she did not say - he has subsequently admitted that. Like the idiot he is, BB has removed both of his best potential defences to having defamed her: that what he said was true and/or that the statement was his honest opinion. You cannot use the latter defence if you have acknowledged you knew the statement to be untrue. He has shot himself in both feet.

So she is just left with having to demonstrate that his statement was defamatory. That might be hard for the average person (the bar for what constitutes defamation is relatively high) but, as a well-known LGB campaigner, I imagine it would be doable for Julie.

Not surprised the tedious tosser doesn't believe in freedom of association for lesbians, or that women should be allowed to meet or communicate without male monitoring. I wonder how he'd feel if a bloke going into a lap-dancing club or brothel wasn't absolutely guaranteed that the women he'd ordered wasn't called Brian last Thursday and doesn't come with a massive beard and cock? He is exactly the sort of client not to listen to his solicitor's advice to apologise/settle. But, sadly for the gaiety of the nation, I suspect his record label will pressure him to back down. Even in these lesbophobic times, it's not a great look for a straight middle-aged white guy to be slagging off a famous lesbian activist in court.

My money's on a through-gritted-teeth apology about 10 minutes after his next call to his management.

I saw this unfold in real time. You could almost hear Julie laughing when Billy dug out Julie's 'misogynist' Substack article and threatened to counter sue.

Julie's a writer. She will know libel laws inside out because she has to. Billy, I suspect, does not.

Julie is also in a long-term relationship with lawyer Harriet Wistrich, of course, and is likely more au fait with the law than Billy.
