Women's rights general conversations - Thread 4

Continuation of Thread 3.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

We may need a FWR cohousing project.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/05/2023 18:20

Sounds good to me, Binturong.

StephanieSuperpowers · 04/05/2023 18:48

Amazing!

How many rooms do we need - a dozen or so? https://www.propertypal.com/bridge-house-38-bann-road-kilrea/770395

Please reserve any sea view bedroom for me.
More seriously, wonderful properties.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 05/05/2023 01:17

I liked the first property. I LOVED the second.

When I was looking for a home swap through a social housing site there was a block somewhere in South London that was women only. I think it's a really good idea but I'd only be up for it if it was only for actual natal women otherwise a big no from me. We could do with the former we could seriously do without the latter.

Gorgeous houses! I have a preference for the second one because I'd rather be in a town (and near the sea) but count me in!

So changing the sex on your medical records does have real life implications for those people in a medical setting.

Shocked. I am shocked.🙄

There's this women's housing association with a fabulous logo:

Seen this?

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/may/05/nhs-treatment-algorithms-not-taking-transgender-patients-into-account

Trigger warnings. "Assigned at birth". Unscientific use of "gender", and general wankery.

A certain subset of male transitioners aren’t going to like this ONE BIT.

But then, it’s the female transitioners who are likely to be most affected by the lack of data (due to testosterone having more dangerous side effects and due to having a female reproductive system) so your middle aged three letter acronym male has less to lose.

Many metrics and thresholds in medicine, including ideal body weight, alcohol clearance rates, kidney function and risk of cardiovascular disease vary by gender.

No they fucking don't, they vary by sex! Why is this so hard for the Guardian to say?

Dying! That’s awesome. Welcome to the Dark Side Mr Cave, we always suspected you’d belong here!

Did you see NC’s argument for why he is attending the coronation? It’s fucking brilliant…

Must say I'm pretty disappointed with Maya Forstater and her stance against period poverty 😞

A woman who has benefited from the generosity of other women, some of whom are not as financially well off, showing disbelief that period poverty is a genuine thing for some women and girls.

Shameful.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/05/2023 13:03

Has anyone told @ArabellaScott ? I think it was her? It only bloody worked, kind of. You called (I think it was you) and he's here, kind of.

Those comments about the coronation...just adorable.

Tricyrtis2022 · 05/05/2023 13:15

What did Maya Forstater say about period poverty? I could tell her a thing or 300 about the issue.

Period poverty is definitely a thing - I’ve personally met a girl who tries to eek out a cheap packet of towels beyond the point of reasonableness because the family budget only allows for one cheap pack a month per girl (and teen periods can be ridiculously heavy).
A woman I know who is a foster carer for teens from extremely difficult backgrounds told me she’s encountered sisters who had resorted to using towelling sports socks as reusable sanitary towels.

Hopefully Maya will revise her view after hearing some real-life stories from people who are less economically well-sheltered from the realities of poverty.

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/05/2023 13:20

I consider myself well sheltered from the realities of life that some people face, but even I've experienced period poverty as a student living away from home. There were times I didn't go to college because I didn't have the money for tampons or towels and the toilet paper in college wouldn't suffice to stuff my knickers with.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 05/05/2023 13:21

Although actually, if it’s this tweet then I think she’s got a point re: spending public funds on period poverty orgs and ambassadors

https://twitter.com/MForstater/status/1560167387860795397

better to tackle poverty overall whilst ensuring sanpro is available free to girls in school/youth projects/wherever teen girls are reachable rather than create new ways to employ middle class poverty tourist types.

Tricyrtis2022 · 05/05/2023 13:26

Wow, that's really disappointing. How can she believe that period poverty is not a 'thing' in the UK? It absolutely is and always has been. Growing up, I had no mother to help me and no one else seemed to even think about my needs. I had no advice, help or money and had to scrabble together whatever I could because I was too ashamed and scared to ask for help.

BordoisAgain · 05/05/2023 13:27

IcakethereforeIam · 05/05/2023 13:19

Is it this tweet?

twitter.com/MForstater/status/1654387774068277248?s=20

Sorry, yes.

Bearing in mind the article is about the removal of free period products in schoos... 55p may as well be £55 if you are a 12 year old girl with no access to money or the means to get to a shop that might sell them.

That's not even getting into the wider conversation about period poverty as a whole.

It's just really disappointing that a woman who has benefited from the financial support of other women can come out with something like this.
