Autistic teen told to call male TA “Mx” & not “Sir” or “Mr *name*

This happened to dd this morning at school. She then came out of school at told me she no longer wants one to one help in her lessons - her EHCP says 25 hours a week. It’s too difficult to remember what to call him and she’s embarrassed she will get it wrong in front of the other students.

What now? I want to make a formal complaint. Am raging tbh. Can someone tell me who I need to be contacting please? The school are totally woke and rainbow soaked. Thank you.

Then she needs to get used to it, same with any other name she has heard for the first time. This is just such a non issue - you are talking about a child not liking someone's name!

Explain to me how, in your many years of teaching experience, you have taught a very autistic child to use someone’s correct name and correct pronouns - when they had a difficulty with it. What techniques did you use? How long did it take you?

What is your understanding of name recognition as a problem in autistic children and adults?

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 24/02/2023 22:17

No.
Well, he does have one, leftover from when he was Prince of Wales, but he doesn’t need one as King, because technically he issues all our passports!

Shock No wonder he looks so tired.

I wonder if he gets annoyed when random people put ‘His Majesty’ (or ‘Mx’) in the title box and he has to delete it?

No we are talking about AN AUTISTIC CHILD HAVING A MELTDOWN because something in her world is out of her control, understanding, whatever! And your response is get over it?

You would be guilty of disability discrimination if you are a teacher.

it's a name.

I've known autistic children have meltdowns over the colour of the wall, the fact the window is open , the fact the window is closed, the teacher has put her hair in plaits today, the teacher has marked their work left handed, the school dinner is cold, there is no ketchup on the chips , someone's shoe lace is undone, some one has a higher mark, ....................

You help them deal with it. You don't repaint the classroom, give them a higher mark, change your name...

I've taught in special schools where every child in the class was autistic, and frequently having meltdowns for opposing reasons. one because the door is open, one because the door is closed. for example

You help them deal with it, you can't bend the entire world around them

If she is having a meltdown because she doesn't like someone's name, she has to learn to ger used to it. Or what is she going to do for the rest of her life every time she meets some one who's name she doesn't like?

You need to get real here, I am sorry, but the idea of storming into school and complaining because a TA had a name that a student doesn't like is a total non starter

ArabellaScott · 24/02/2023 22:25

Here he is filling in Admiral Beezlepop Twatwa's new 5 year passport.

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 22:26

IT'S NOT A FUCKING NAME
How many times? 😬

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:26

Anyway, mean and nasty rage monsters! Everyone is forgetting to centre the most important person in all of this:

That poor TA.

He doesn't want to be called Mr. Because that is what this all boils down to. It would hurt his feelz and invalidate his identity and make him so bloody NORMAL, that he doesn't want to be called Mr...And that's ALL that really matters.

Such a shame it is so problematic for him that he can't just accept being called whatever is most comfortable for the pupil he supports.

Maybe he needs his own support person to help him through his day?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 24/02/2023 22:26

I'm going to have a meltdown in a minute over the fact you can't tell titles and names apart, Nimbo.

ArabellaScott · 24/02/2023 22:27

The pen is leaking because of the special fancy umlauts on Admiral, it's most frustrating, and he's got another 456,794 to sign before teatime.

So then, why not say this to the TA?

Why not tell him it's 'just a name' and that he needs to get over it AND GET ON WITH HIS FUCKING JOB.

OR, is it becuase youy are centering the person with the special gender identity in this situation?

ArabellaScott · 24/02/2023 22:29

I'm glad we have knowledgeable and compassionate women on this board who work with and help support children and YP and have given the OP sensible advice.

And also women who can tell when someone is talking a lot of shite to try and deliberately wind us up and waste our time, when we ought to be making jokes about Camilla's daft hat, instead.

EpicChaos · 24/02/2023 22:29

ArabellaScott · 24/02/2023 21:37

Don't be so blooming obtuse. By that logic 'Elephantweezle' has always been allowable.

@Nimbostratus100 " and how long has it been used in passports? decades "

It's not even used now as a given option - i just happen to have a passport form in my other hand right now and the options are... mr, mrs, miss, ms or other. Not a sight, nor sound of mx and long may that continue!

@NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · Today 21:14
If the OP's daughter was a wheelchair-user, and she'd been given a timetable of classes held on floors that didn't have step-free access, would you tell her that her daughter will have to encounter stairs eventually?

Very good point! That's what an analogy should look like. It certainly looks better than this heap of junk...
" what happens if its a banker, a lecturer, a pharmacist, a carer, a job interview? anyone could be Mx " !

@Nimbostratus100

" it is generally chosen by people who don't want their emails to be read in a prejudiced way because their sex is obvious. "

How does that work in a classroom setting, precisely? Hmmm, does teach turn up with bag on head, oversized clothes and a vocoder and speak from behind a curtain?

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:29

Why does the TA want to 'bend the world around them' to get everyone to use made up fucking title that NO ONE USES

ArabellaScott · 24/02/2023 22:29

Actually it's quite a nice hat.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 24/02/2023 22:29

Or jokes about Dallas

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/02/2023 22:30

I suspect nimbo may a lot of casual supply work in schools that enables them to self identify as an expert in SEN, autism, passports, titles and education generally while merely passing through different schools. Judging by their ignorance on this thread.

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:31

Dear god i cant believe these numpties are teaching children.

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:32

Mx Bunbury

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:31

Dear god i cant believe these numpties are teaching children.

They won't be teaching children, merely being paid to teach children.

WomaninBoots · 24/02/2023 22:33

Hopefully Nimboarsus is not actually a teacher and is just trolling.

Anactor · 24/02/2023 22:33

“I've taught in special schools where every child in the class was autistic “

File under: things that definitely didn’t happen.

MichelleScarn · 24/02/2023 22:33

BlessedKali · 24/02/2023 22:28

Abso fucking lutley!!
But this wouldn't then give the centred specialness of being the only person who's views, feels and demands count!!
