Despite everything that has happened over the past few days;

Ben Bradshaw
''A warm welcome for @ Keir_Starmer as he recommits to reforming the UK’s out of date gender recognition process at tonight’s @ LGBTLabour @ LGBTHM
reception in Parliament''

Unfortunately, it wouldn't really surprise me if this issue doesn't really move the needle on polling. First of all, many people iare sick of the Tories and would prioritise voting them out. Secondly, despite recent events, many people are either oblivious to current affairs and/or are tribal voters. Thirdly, I suspect that many people who are aware of the issue are of the opinion that women aren't fully human but are merely partially-sentient support bipeds and therefore don't need privacy, dignity or safety.

Also (iirc the numbers I saw yesterday) something like 7m families are expected to have insufficient income to meet their essential expenses.

One tenth of the population is on an NHS waiting list.

It is not surprising that other issues come top in voters' minds.

It is not all down other people being tribal/being thick/not caring.

Well if it doesn't then he should probably say that and quick. After all us rights hoarding dinosaurs need to know

This.

Thelnebriati · 08/02/2023 13:40

Nobody has said those people are tribal/thick/uncaring because those people are also us.

It's had an impact on my voting intention, for sure.

I wouldn’t vote for him. I don’t know anyone who would. Having seen the polls online but if it’s a recent thing, I haven’t stated my voting intentions anywhere so could be that many haven’t, in which case they aren’t accurate.

It's quite possible that GR reform does not equal self ID.

Quite. Until it is an announced policy, it is not policy.

Thelnebriati · 08/02/2023 13:42

What does 'reform' mean if not self ID? From a party that says its offensive to define women by their sex?

The post I quoted said exactly that!

oblivious to current affairs
tribal voters
of the opinion women are not fully human

He really doesn't want to be in government, it seems.

Agreed!

That's not how polling works, they don't need to ask YOU because if lots of people agree on an issue, it'll show up in a representative sample.

I'm not saying I know, but all the polling has this issue non-existent in most voters' lists.

LizzieSiddal · 08/02/2023 13:49

As a pp said Ben Bradshaw is the MP who shouted at Rosie Duffield in the House of Commons. So he may be stirring about something he wants to happen rather than knowing the full facts.

spottie · 08/02/2023 13:49

I'm opposed to self ID but fully intend to vote Labour. Getting rid of the Tories is my priority, I just can't vote on this issue alone. I'm sure that there are lots of people like me

Sadly I think this is absolutely right. I talked to my daughter and her husband about this the other day and they will vote Labour regardless just to get rid of the Tories. Their daughters are only six and three, and so are most of their friends' children, so the issue regarding young trans people hasn't featured in their lives yet. I also talked to other (male) voters who said that the number of trans people was very small so they didn't see why it should be a problem (completely missing the whole point of the risks in self-ID).

pattihews · 08/02/2023 13:52

Starmer's going to end up doing a Sturgeon and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Conservatives must be dancing for joy. This will help them retain the Red Wall.

FRIGATUS · 08/02/2023 13:53

there is genuinely no party left to vote for… I’ve never not voted, not what else to do?

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 08/02/2023 13:53

watchfulwishes · 08/02/2023 13:34

The Tories also say it needs reform. Every party says it needs reform, don't they?

The Tories ended up dropping the price from
£150 to a fiver and moved the application forms online.

They’ve not said there are any more ‘reforms’ planned.

Abhannmor · 08/02/2023 13:54

A Women's Rights Party running in local / bye elections might concentrate his mind.

Even if they didn't win they could siphon off Labour votes?

MarshaBradyo · 08/02/2023 13:54

We’ll see. I remember Penny M feeling fairly happy with the polls and this issue pretty much taking her out via the media

I wouldn’t call it either way yet, but any party limply clinging onto gender lies are exposed to a media focus on it.

He has MPs who absolutely believe in this and they won’t be removed

Yep, that's me too.

I hope that Labour are not going to pursue self ID. I do think the tide has turned and the talk of reform is the only way they can think of to fudge this. But ultimately, self ID is not the only issue I care about. The Tories have done so much damage over the last decade or so. I need them gone, and Labour is the best hope for getting rid of them.

In any case, we've had men in female prisons and other female spaces on a Tory watch. They might make all the right noises, but I'm not convinced that they actually give a toss about protecting women in any case.

Thelnebriati · 08/02/2023 13:56

It wasn't just on Ben Bradshaw's Twitter, its also on LGBT+ Labour, the group that have a petition to define transphobia.

@ LGBTLabour
Thank you to @ Keir_Starmer for speaking at out LGBT+ History event tonight, including committing to making progress on Gender Recognition if we get into government. Keir was right, we have made so much progress, but there is still so much more to do

Single issue, Brexit party style?

KJK is going to run in Starmer’s constituency, for sunlight purposes.

Ok, a sample from what? Where is the data being pulled from? Agreeing on issues online or somewhere else?

There is absolutely no evidence this issue will change outcomes in the red wall seats.

I like the idea that red wall seats are decided by the switching votes of middle class feminist voters, if only it were so.

Thelnebriati · 08/02/2023 13:59

What makes you think I'm middle class? Is it because I'm articulate?
