It is crucial to understand that the prison service has effectively operated on a self-ID basis for years. In this respect, the government’s gender recognition reforms largely bring the law into line with current practice. To see the future, then, you need only look at the prison service now.

How did we get here? In part, because the government contracted out its own responsibilities. Prisons were a gateway. According to James Morton of the Scottish Trans Alliance: “We strategised that by working intensively with the Scottish Prison Service to support them to include women as women on a self-declaration basis within very challenging circumstances, we would be able to ensure that all other public services should be able to do likewise”. I imagine he may regret writing that now; I hope he regrets using women prisoners as lab-rats.

That interview made me furious. They are deliberately ignoring how prevalent and unreported male sexual violence is. You can’t have a ‘risk assessment’ as most men who sexually assault women never face justice. Most crimes are unreported, if reported not charged, if charged not prosecuted, if prosecuted not convicted. We all know this. A justice secretary should know this.

And it’s not just predatory men women are assaulted by. It’s also opportunistic men.

The move from sex segregation creates opportunity.

It’s simply not true that you can keep men who will assault women out of prison by looking at those convicted of a sex crime. It’s simply not true.

The fact we just can’t know which men will assault is why we have sex segregated spaces

This is all so true.

The other illogical thing I wondered is why if it is a good idea to house transwomen with women on the grounds that the transwomen are too vulnerable in the men’s prison,, why not non- violent gay men who are vulnerable too?
