Why the current outrage about men in women's prisons?

Don't get me wrong, it's about time the general public got angry.

But what about the rest of them?

I understand there is 168 of transwomen in women's prisons in England and Wales.

Why wasn't there this media attention about "Karen" White (England) or "Katie" Dolatowski. (Scotland). To name just 2?

What's changed?

The world is waking up. Penis have no place in woman’s spaces.

But why now? The whole KW was horrendous as was that poor patient who was told she wasn't raped as there wasn't any male patients.

Why now?

I've been wondering this too.

It just seems to be a perfect storm of circumstances and awareness coming together. But I'm looking at Sturgeon willing to compromise on this one and thinking - can we please now go through the cases of all the ones in women's prisons that didn't end all over the press and with a lot of public pressure?

I agree OP. I spoke to a friend about men in women's estate last year, and she just laughed at me. Nor did she have a response about the woman raped in hospital. Indeed, why now?

There are only 8 transitioned males in female prisons on record in England and Wales.

There are many transitioned males that seem to be in the male prisons.

The issue is it is really unclear who is where .

What's changed? Because this latest case is in Scotland where they have just passed the GRR. Lots of statements about 'nothing to see here' trans women are women / most vulnerable etc etc, men won't claim to be women to commit violence against women, rejection of proposal to stop males accused of sexual offences from changing gender. And lo! We have a rapist suddenly identifying as female and only under pressure has Sturgeon agreed this person will not be put in a women's jail.
That's what's changed.

I think it is really unclear on numbers.

I agree but in Scotland criminals went to the prison of their self chosen gender anyway. The GRR would make no difference

Is there a reliable way to spot them?

In the current case, the giveaway is the combination of the rape charge alongside female pronouns.

Agreed it’s a timing issue. Women got told we were worrying our pretty little heads over nothing because there was no evidence ever in the history of ever not since the Stone Age that predatory men ever lie to get access to women. It was the thing that never happens etc etc

Normal people who do not normally get involved in politics and could traditionally take a "live and let live" attitude are waking up to how utterly ridiculous and dangerous the TWAW campaign is.

I have discussed trans issues in relation to women's rights with lots of different people in past few months and have not come across anyone who agrees that TWAW

But I think that's just prisoners who have "officially" transitioned.

But it's is almost impossible to get an accurate figure. Hopefully there will be a lot of squeaky bums as senior civil servants start to panic!

I actually thought that people would be up and fighting after the case where Amy (female prisoner) bravely gave evidence about her experience in prison with a male prisoner.

Then I thought people would have been outraged by the Scottish prison study by Matthew Maycock that gave evidence that males were indeed transitioning to get into the female prison and then detransitioning. And where women told the researchers that at least one male bragged about getting moved into the prison to get sex.

How blatant does it have to be that they want to obscure the stats for whatever reason.

I don't think it's that purposeful. I suspect the data is just very very poor and impossible to marry up people who have offended, where they end up in jail, who is out on probation etc. They know at individual points who is where, most of the time, but tracking people through the justice system data-wise isn't easy.

Timing is exactly right and the Westminster looking to undermine NS via the media.

It's because the UK government has warned that it will overrule the Scottish parliament on gender self-ID. If Sturgeon gets her way, anyone will be able to legally change their gender in Scotland with virtually no effort. This of course will affect the rest of the UK too.

Sturgeon hopes the Scottish people will see this as Westminster oppressing Scotland, and rally to her party. But many Scots (nationalist or not) are appalled by her gung-ho genderism.

It's just chance that the rape case occurred at this moment, as a perfect illustration of why self-ID is a disaster.

I followed some of the sexually assaulted female prisoner's case. I think l am remembering correctly that when the judge asked how many transwomen were in prison he was told the prison authorities did not know for sure, because if they had a GRA they were recorded as female.
