Why the current outrage about men in women's prisons?

BlueBooh · 26/01/2023 15:59

Don't get me wrong, it's about time the general public got angry.

But what about the rest of them?

I understand there is 168 of transwomen in women's prisons in England and Wales.

Why wasn't there this media attention about "Karen" White (England) or "Katie" Dolatowski. (Scotland). To name just 2?

What's changed?

my take is that it’s been building and building and is starting to hit a tipping point. There are now lots of negative trans stories (well accurate but negative) in the Times and Telegraph. I think is HC women are finally getting our point across and the politicians are finally realizing what people really think of this madness if they are paying attention.

The Scottish rapist’s rapes, carried out with his penis, will be recorded in the crime statistics as having been carried out by a woman.

Boiledbeetle · 27/01/2023 01:47

Well this conversation is going to remain in the news for another day

Why the current outrage about men in women's prisons?
BlueBooh · 27/01/2023 04:58
  • She stated: 'I told him to stop and he did not. He kept going. That is when I closed my eyes and let him do what he wanted to do.' In her own evidence, Bryson often became emotional and refuted the charges. Bryson said: 'I would never do that. I would never hurt any woman.'*

I can't bare that the press still use the she/her pronouns! Makes reading it very confusing.

It's so wrong - he is a MAN who raped a woman.

The poor woman at least she was "allowed" to use the correct pronouns.

How must the 2 woman feel seeing this fucker's face in the papers every day? Let's not forget his victims.

A cynical person might suggest that as up until now it's only affected women it hasn't mattered. Now that the UK Government needs to stamp on the nonsensical law that Scotland have introduced there will be great interest in this matter.
The timing of this pink legginged rapist is perfect. Perhaps for a reason.

Or perhaps there'll be another case along in a minute too.

A less cynical person might suggest that the tide turned last year and the emperor's New clothes are seen to be a lie.

We are actually a long way away from where we need to be yet though. But we might be heading the right way now.

Out of 168 legally-male transgender women

As others have already highlighted, it’s the “legally-male” part of that statement that tells you what’s going on. Once they have a GRC, the prison service in E&W no longer tracks them as anything but ‘female.’

And it’s that lack of tracking which, of course, the TRAs and their cheerleaders want to spread. If you can’t collate meaningful data then any cases that do make the news can be dismissed as “one offs” or “an unfortunate mistake.”

I believe it’s Belgium which is the current gold standard for this. There’ve been “no problems reported” since self ID was introduced because the government there have made sure their police don’t record any.

Yes. Can't help but wonder if the reason for rushing through the GRR before Christmas was to avoid them being discussed at the same time. Worked well, didn't it?! 🤔

Bellalalala · 27/01/2023 08:04

its all about timing. It’s o lt important when it matters to certain people.

I don’t believe NS does believe TWAW. I believe she knew Westminster would block the bill. She wanted to use Westminster blocking the bill to get more support for independence.

But this appeared which served Westminsters agenda. This will get them more support for blocking the bill. It makes NS look like an idiot. It will turn a lot of TRAs against NS. People who didn’t really much about the issue will see it and think it’s awful.

NS has proved TWAW isn’t true or workable. She has shown she doesn’t agree with it. She has shown women that she doesn’t give a shit about their safety. She has shown that she feels that increasing the risk to women’s safety is acceptable, if she believes it will improve her position.

She has also proved the ‘no man would pretend to be a woman to get access to women’s spaces’ crowd, to be wrong.

It’s the same as an issue. It only gets lots of coverage when it serves certain people.

Yes it is Belgium. I too read that article. The police have obscured the statistics by detaching the current figures from comparative period figures. So they have to be collated by hand and only when the stats are released as the only place they are released is where they are written over each time they are updated.

And it is the only area of the statistics that has this new and bizarre publishing method.

However, when official statistics are not publicly released, and there is nothing but anecdotes then bold claims can be made and not refuted. Convenient, eh? Then those anecdotes are easily dismissed…

I suspect that there will be books published with all the different countries dishonest approaches in the coming decades. This is truly a scandal that has been building slowly. And each country plays a part.

It will be a sickening read and I doubt any lessons will be learned. Because this scandal was sold in under the guise of tolerance and kindness and misrepresented statistics.

We are already seeing the MPs starkly twisting their past positions with people like Annaliese Dodds who couldn’t possibly have defined a woman, now declaring woman should be protected from rapists. And Yvette Cooper who similarly ‘wasn’t being dragged into any rabbit holes’ about definitions out there now saying women need protection and how ridiculous this situation is. All weasel words. They are complicit and should own their complicity.

The book is being written as we speak no doubt. Why wouldn’t you?

This.

I hope there’s a list somewhere of every individual who is complicit in this. Every single one of them should be made to own it.

Given how many politicians have been firmly in favour of self id I think it's important to allow them a way back.

They need to see that changing tack is popular with the population as a whole and that most people don't support self id.

TangledWebOfDeception · 27/01/2023 09:29

Yes, that’s all good and well. I do agree with you.

But I for one won’t give them a free pass. They should each own their part of the responsibility for this.

ScrollingLeaves · 27/01/2023 09:29

They have been entirely complicit in institutionalising trans gender ideology.

RoyalCorgi · 27/01/2023 09:32

It is frustrating for those of us who have been banging on about this for several years. It's not as if there has been no coverage - the Mail covered Karen White pretty comprehensively - but this time the coverage has exploded.

I think several things have come together. One there was already a massive fuss about the GRR bill, with various Scottish MSPs defying their party whip, and then the government using section 35 to block the passage of the bill. So that has brought it all to the forefront of public attention. Then this case comes along and it's the perfect illustration of what gender-critical feminists have been saying all along - that a system of self-ID allows sexually predatory men to identify as women for advantage. From the point of view of the mostly right-wing press, it's a perfect stick to beat Sturgeon with. It has also given the UK government the chance to completely wrongfoot Labour, who up till now have been all in favour of self-ID and are now pretending that, oh, of course male rapists shouldn't be in women's prisons, how could anyone think we believed that?

Let's just be grateful that the media have finally got here, however long it's taken.

TheFeistyFeminist · 27/01/2023 09:45

This was the lead story on the BBC News at Ten last night, and that's the type of coverage it needs. Sunlight is the best disinfectant!

WarriorN · 27/01/2023 09:47

I think it's the timing - the gov using the special powers to block the snp is the first time it's been used. Historic. Many people have had to listen for the first time and understand the issues.

It's raised the core issues to the fore for analysis and now there's a real life case perfectly illustrating the dangers the Scottish gov so blithely waved away and ignored.

WarriorN · 27/01/2023 09:49

Articles like this with Rhonda on the front page of the bbc app are great.

Bringing it to the fore.

Last night the bbc saying the crime will be listed as female.

WTAF moments for many.

Yes and Huw Edwards was almost tripping over himself not to say “he” instead of “she”.

I noted that the BBC’s daily Newscast podcast didn’t mention it at all last night….

EndlessTea · 27/01/2023 19:14

I am suddenly wondering this too now OP. I can’t get my head around NS and now Peter Tatchell giving a shit. What’s going on? Did someone send out a memo and tell them to change tack?

Ramblingnamechanger · 27/01/2023 23:46

Has Alex Sobel commented yet? He was one that stated his lack of issues with men being in womens prisons.

One thing about Belgium though, is that everyone who wants to change sex their dossier goes in front of the Procureur des Konings who goes through their criminal record. Anyone who has anything more than a speeding ticket is not allowed to change sex and their "deadname" is still the dossier that can be looked up by police. They can't hide anything.

So maybe a self interest by the Tories to have this in the news right now.

It distracts from their recent failing as well as undermines the SNP.

Finally someone who sees it for what it is!
