Why the current outrage about men in women's prisons?

BlueBooh · 26/01/2023 15:59

Don't get me wrong, it's about time the general public got angry.

But what about the rest of them?

I understand there is 168 of transwomen in women's prisons in England and Wales.

Why wasn't there this media attention about "Karen" White (England) or "Katie" Dolatowski. (Scotland). To name just 2?

What's changed?

I think it's just one of those perfect storm combinations.

We had lots of protest over the GRR, where we were told that there was no need for all the various proposed safeguards because <insert patronising response here>

Then we've had the kick off over section 35 and it being a big topic already

Then along comes "Isla", in pink leggings with visible cock, making a perfect media story.

There have been other cases, although I think most have transitioned after sentencing rather than before the trial which made this a bit more unusual. Katie Dolatowski was a "woman" before the crime I think (so different timescales) and doesn't have the imagery to go with this one.

CatherinaJTV · 26/01/2023 19:28

the outrage is engineered to distract from the fact that 99% of reported rapes never end in a conviction. How handy.

Yes of course that's the reason why

Silly us.

Boiledbeetle · 26/01/2023 19:35

The outrage at this is completely engineered.

It's just the bucket that has slowly filled.

Just think about it, most of us when we heard what was going on we thought the first person telling us was crazy or a conspiracy theorist because everything sounded so out of this world like some dystopian fiction novel.

It took a while for people to start to believe, because who wants to believe this is happening? The hounding of JK Rowling, Lia Thomas swimming with women, the vocal TRA becoming more and more obnoxious and loud and arrogant and more and more women and detransitioners speaking openly. Add some whispers of the lawsuits that have been happening and it's just become too clear something is going really wrong with society.

Drip, drip, drip... The bucket is almost full.

The few politicians and news outlets that see what is happening want to be on the side that wins this one and are doing a 180. Just a few more drops and I'm sure the TRA will provide.

Yes. My sister has always been of the mind to me about not going on about it.

She's peaked last week and she now totally gets it.

She's a lesbian and when I explained she was a genital feshist she laughed her head off but totally got it.

Media agenda I think (linking stories) about bloody time too!

ExiledElsie · 26/01/2023 20:11

It's a very strange thing to be part of, seeing this all unfold. I thought the Keira Bell case would be sufficiently shocking to change policies, but apparently not. At least it's being discussed now.

I've just seen Konstantin Kisin from triggernometry is good to be on Question Time tonight. Anyone think the issue of women's rights will come up?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/01/2023 20:18

I suspect the BBC would like to avoid it, but I don’t see how they can this time

smileladiesplease · 26/01/2023 20:27

It's turning because lawyers are now seeing very many ways to make a shed load of money.

Representing youngsters given hormone treatment even surgery snd not being told all the pitfalls. Men attacking women in women's prisons and other women's only spaces. Women refusing to change their opinions in the work place to call trans men,or self ID I perverts. women then being sacked and sueing their employers and winning!!

Lawyers rule the world! Lawyers change/make policies. Money all about money!

Equally The sheer hate shown by demonstrations like the one in Scotland just sickens most people. The tide is turning snd I think fairly quickly now thank god

ScrollingLeaves · 26/01/2023 20:40

In case any of you haven’t seen this petition yet but might like to sign it, please scroll down.

It is not just the very few rapists who have been caught and convicted who shouldn’t be in women’s prisons.

A woman in the Equality Act means a woman in the biological sense. No man can identify or certify himself into that state under all circumstances.

People need to be clearer than they are at present after years of chinese whispers from Stonewall and the like.

To update the Equality Act to make clear that the characteristic ‘sex’, one of the nine characteristics under the act, is biological sex.

This is a Parliamentary petition which will protect your privacy.

Better late than never. Too many women have been at risk fir too long

Scotland GRR
A woman in a Merkin
Behead TERFs
A rapist in a blonde wig and polkadot umbrella with a visible cock and balls.
All in a short timescale...

Perfect storm.

When even Tatchell is pretending he never said TWAW when just a few days ago he was saying TWAW...is it finally time I can go back to just watching gardening videos?

And I thought the end of last year was crazy, with the pee man and the fetish boobs teacher and the Mermaids implosion. It feels like there’s been a kind of exponential curve, with the visible scandals happening faster and faster and faster. The first one I remember is Jess Bradley, and it’s like TRAs have been shooting themselves in the foot over and over since then and they’ve finally done it enough that people are starting to see them clearly.

I have no idea why there should be an exponential curve, but if the pattern holds, god alone knows what the next few weeks have in store.

Boiledbeetle · 26/01/2023 21:15

Do you think the TRAs are in the death throws of their purity spiral?

Hellibore · 26/01/2023 21:18

Because of Wee Nicola.

LangClegsInSpace · 26/01/2023 21:18

Yes it's odd that it's happening now but thank fuck people are at last getting outraged.

This, from almost 10 years ago, is one of the first things that convinced me there was a problem:

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/pre-op-transsexual-killer-moved-out-2928751

Male trans people won the right to be placed in the female estate because of a discrimination case brought by an attempted rapist In 2009.

www.bailii.org/cgi-bin/format.cgi?doc=/ew/cases/EWHC/Admin/2009/2220.html

The claimant was invited to speak in the HoL in 2018.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5440153/Trans-convict-invited-speak-House-Lords.html

In the middle of all this there was the Tara '7" surprise' Hudson shitshow when over 150K people signed a petition for TH to be moved to a women's prison because of a carefully angled cleavage selfie. I hope most of those signatories have since had a moment of shame.

www.theguardian.com/society/2015/oct/30/transgender-woman-moved-from-mens-to-womens-prison

This is why we got the 2016 prison rules which are only just properly being reversed now.

TL;DR we have been talking about this for FUCKING YEARS.

I am so pleased this is at last getting mainstream attention.

lunchme · 26/01/2023 21:20

Peoples general attitudes can be disgusting on this. I said to a friend there are men presenting as women in women's prisons.

Her response? But they're in prison so it doesn't really matter Confused

She's not the only one either with a similar view

Jacopo · 26/01/2023 21:30

I’m beyond furious at the way all the universities have been captured by queer theory and everyone has to go along with the fiction that people can change sex. Why aren’t all the supposedly intelligent biology professors standing up and shouting “No they can’t!”
I’m hoping that younger people will begin to get bored with it. Queer Theory? So last century.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/01/2023 21:36

IwantToRetire · 26/01/2023 16:32

This is from an article in Inside Times which gives a bit more background on the figures re trans women prisoners (ie before this months addition)

" ... Out of 168 legally-male transgender women prisoners in England and Wales only six are in women’s prisons, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The figures highlight the impact of a rule-change in 2019 which made it harder for trans women held in male prisons to obtain a transfer to the female estate. The data was published in November, in the Offender Equalities Annual Report, but relates to the situation as it was in March 2022. ... "

insidetime.org/only-six-trans-women-in-womens-prisons/

But agree this is now being more publicly discussed because it fits the political agenda of some papers to make it headline news.

And lets face it, in terms of tabloids, this week's conviction of a (fe)male rapist is front cover gold.

Surely the “legally male” is a key thing there ? How many are “legally female” ?

DarkDayforMN · 26/01/2023 21:41

or an extinction burst. I really do hope so! Just a bit worried about how much further they can escalate.

It is absolutely beyond me why so many otherwise intelligent people go along with and perpetuate gender ideology and erosion of boundaries. I can only think that they’re still on the #bekind bandwagon.

Plus, it was having a discussion with my DC about JKR being ‘transphobic’ that led me to actually read what she wrote and become shocked to learn that biologically intact trans women were the vast majority.

Despite being researchers, they haven’t researched this issue. And I am too nervous to initiate any discussion after seeing what’s happened to other female academics.

MorvenOfMalvern · 26/01/2023 21:45

@CatherinaJTV to be honest, I for one am not going to expend energy on pushing for greater success prosecuting rapists if the end result is that we lock them up with vulnerable women who can't get away. We need to sort this first, ensure that anyone male never ever ever gets any opportunity to have the state facilitate their onward offending, and then work to raise the conviction rates.

This is not manufactured disgust at the absolute dereliction of duty our law makers have demonstrated. This is real, white hit fury at all the things we said would happen and were happening , happening and hurting so many women along the way.

Nobody who cares about their own human rights can afford to ignore the human rights of people in prison. We all have human rights because we are human and for no other reason. We all have these rights or none of us do.

Article 3 protects us all from mental or physical torture, or from inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

We have 200 years worth of case law for single sex prisons based on Article 3 kinds of argument. Elizabeth Fry's activism, which led to the 1823 Gaols Act, was inspired by her determination to eliminate the sexual exploitation and assault, up to and including rape, of female inmates. This 200 y/o act is the first time the law said that male and female prisoners should be kept separate. This Act also said that female inmates should be attended by female prison officers, for the same reasons.

2023 is the 200th anniversary of the 1823 Gaols Act. It's perfect timing, Let's make some noise.
