Women's rights general conversations - Thread 3

Continuation of Thread 2.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Just popping in to recommend this thread. It is full of excellent points. Nodding my head a lot.

Indefatigable efforts again from the OP there. 👏

Goodness me, how times have changed! In 2004 the Guardian published this article: quite impossible to imagine them doing that now.

www.theguardian.com/society/2004/jul/30/health.mentalhealth

I've looked for the report they mention but can't find it. Maybe someone else can?

Winterborne74 · 06/03/2023 15:39

Did you find this summary?

genderchallenge.no/onewebmedia/ARIF%20summary%20gender%20reassignment.docx

SqueakyDinosaur · 06/03/2023 15:53

I didn't - thanks!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/03/2023 18:08

If only the Guardian read their own articles.

Although even in that I note a little number fudging - hard to spot because the 2 bits of info are well separated: up to 18% suicide rate in people who get treatment; up to 1 in 5 suicide rate in those who don't.

Madamedefargelikescrows · 06/03/2023 23:26

I like Mary Bourke and am not even a tiny bit surprised that the Hoxton crowd booed her.

Madamedefargelikescrows · 06/03/2023 23:27

That looks like an interesting thread @Kucinghitam I shall give it a read.

Great article @Kucinghitam - thanks for the link.

EvelynBeatrice · 07/03/2023 12:27

"EvelynBeatrice
Bit of a non sequitur but... a while back I was stunned by article by male Times journalist- maybe Sunday times - exclaiming at silly women unhappy at sharing shop changing rooms with men ... after all, everyone is just there to try on clothes. I waited to see his next post explaining to black men why they are wrong to worry or complain about racism, but strangely enough, it never appeared

What an odd comparison?!!??! Racism is against segregation?"

I assume you are deliberately missing the point - which is that white people generally (ought to) avoid telling black people what racism is, feels like, is nothing to worry about etc. The same goes for men opining to women about what they should worry about in the complete absence of the life experience of these women.

Thank you for linking it. It is brilliant.

duc748 · 07/03/2023 14:45

That's an interesting piece. I'm sure it's been linked to here before (or even at the other place?), I'm sure I remember that stuff about windigo.

Winterborne74 · 07/03/2023 14:55

I linked it a few months ago, but I think I got it from here in the first place!

A quick search shows that @Ereshkigalangcleg posted it in June last year. It obviously resonates with a lot of people.

duc748 · 07/03/2023 14:57

Thanks, Winterborne. Not imagining things, then! 😀

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/03/2023 15:16

I did, can't remember where I got it from myself!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 08/03/2023 08:50

Really good article here on the investigation into why the police are so bad at investigating sexual offences, and how they can improve (step 1, investigate the suspect!) www.mumsnet.com/talk/feminism/4757830-long-read-on-betsy-stanko-and-the-policing-of-sexual-violence?

SinnerBoy · 08/03/2023 09:22

Here's one which sort of resonates for me; some of you may remember me posting on JTT a few years back, about the van with three guys, stopped to hurl abuse at a woman jogger:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4728159-womens-rights-general-conversations-thread-3?page=38&reply=124466579

I simply don't understand the mentality of these men.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 08/03/2023 09:42

Wrong link, Sinner?

That was a fascinating (and depressing) article, thanks Bint!

@SinnerBoy your link is to itself! Grin

Have Mumsnet changed the colour of 'Mumsnet' on the main landing page for IWD?

Yes, it's gone blue-purple-green. Didn't realise it was for International People's Day Wink

I've got a bit of an eye infection and I thought it was some sort of side effect...
