Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Women's rights general conversations - Thread 3

Continuation of Thread 2.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

I'll take it from anywhere right now.

Lawls knows me of old so don't lynch me when I say "Ooooh! Matron!"

Noticed this news piece when following a link about ss being misgendered 😔
Didn't think it deserved its own thread but, if I understand it correctly, a toilet pervert was caught because a member of staff noticed a man going into the women's toilet. Good men stay out so the bad ones get noticed.

Looks like there's a Spanish Kiera Bell:

www.amandafamilias.org/post/the-first-trans-with-regret-challenges-the-public-health-system

The psychiatrist responsible completely exonerates himself: “You cried and you manipulated me. You manipulated me by crying, but I knew that the sex change was not going to make you feel better.”

What a horror show.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/02/2023 14:25

There's a thread about a very interesting BMJ article looking at the (lack of) evidence base for gender care - and it mentions that 2 recent studies show that between 20 and 30% of those who start hormone treatment stop it within a few years. So there are probably multiple Keira Bells in all countries with medical that are going along with this.

duc748 · 24/02/2023 14:26

Just awful. Still having periods? We'll just remove your uterus as well. What happened to, first, do no harm?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/02/2023 14:48

I just read the 'concluding thoughts' bit of that BMJ article. Sobering - seeing what facts and figures there are set out like that.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/02/2023 14:50

Also sobering, the Article on AGP by Lorelei thread and the link it contains.

Exonerates? Wtf sort of psychiatrist allows themself to be manipulated by tears?Confused

I know. Absolutely shocking abnegation of professional standards and duty. Not to mention, completely neglectful of adult responsibility.

Noticed this on the We Are Fair Cop twitter, a female only society looking for members and support at Bristol University

Kucinghitam · 25/02/2023 05:11

A situation depressingly familiar (by observation if not by direct experience) of so many in academia. And IMO absolutely something that disproportionately affects women (although several people say otherwise).

The police one?

Tricyrtis2022 · 25/02/2023 13:52

Yes, it's all wonderfully silly.

mach2 · 25/02/2023 13:57

Found it! And managed a pun that hasn't been used yet.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 20:31

I have no idea of this writer's stanch on gi but from my viewpoint this Guardian article seems terribly terfy

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 20:31

Sorry, *stance

Winterborne74 · 25/02/2023 20:53

Think Rebecca Solnit is a genderist. I agree you’d think the writer of that article would get it, but apparently not.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/aug/10/trans-rights-feminist-letter-rebecca-solnit

Her book/essay “Men explain things to me” inspired the term “mansplaining” IIRC.

Reading that article makes it so clear that what she doesn't see is that self-ID is the opening of the doors to any man who says he "identifies " as a woman into women's single sex spaces

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 21:01

I had a feeling that would be the case. Cognitive dissonance seems baked in.

Winterborne74 · 25/02/2023 21:02

Such a wilful blind spot. Bizarre.

mach2 · 25/02/2023 21:02

and also that quite a significant number of people are born intersex, and some are misgendered at birth, and male and female never were airtight categories anyway

Solnit has dragged in people with DSD's despite their requests to be kept out of this issue.

bignosebignose · 25/02/2023 21:16

Transphobes are always warning us that if trans people live in peace and legal recognition and even have rights, there will be terrible consequences

Mkay, I suppose that would be transphobic. Luckily that’s not what most of the debate is about.

duc748 · 25/02/2023 21:35

That's all very 'Tales Of The City', and sounds great, but it doesn't alter the fact that it you give rights to one group of people that impinge on other people's rights, you've got a problem.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 21:51

That comment piece from August 2020 seems so dated. She really throws the kitchen sink at it. Exporting the culture of one small, self selected part of San Francisco to the rest of the world, what could go wrong?

As an aside, does anyone know why all the lesbian bars had closed by 2015?
