Probably more like Blackpool.

Forgive me if this has been already mentioned, but I saw this graph on the BBC webpage recently and it says that 63 percent of women support Scotland’s gender reform bill, even though it could erode women’s rights. 49 percent of men supported it. Why is there this disparity?

What year is this from? It’s certainly not from this year. Look at the date range. Also it doesn’t reference the GRR bill.

Full frontal attack...Poor word choice Nicola. Poor!

She make care about pronouns, but she certainly doesn’t care about possessive pronouns — “it’s”, tsk, tsk.

That's from a couple of years ago, and didn't make it known at the polling stage that the majority of tw keep their sausage and sprouts. Once that fact was clarified, it swung way in the other direction. Funny how facts change things, innit?

Merrilydancing · 16/01/2023 20:58

Very happy tonight, let’s hope that the grown ups are finally back in the room.

Ah ok. Yeah I’m glad that there will be more sunlight now, so hopefully more people will realise just how detrimental to women gender ideology is. The fact that the majority of Transwomen retain their tackle, being one of the issues.

So Merrilydancing is merrily dancing around the dining room then I presume!😁

Good

Can someone explain how the bill impacts GB wide equality law?

I’ve linked the Policy Exchange review up thread - if you look at the Executive Summary pages it gives a good overview.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 21:27

The Equality Act talks about protected characteristics. It includes sex as one and having a gender recognition certificate as another. It says that if there is a good reason to (can't remember the exact phrase) a legal woman- that is a natal man with a GRC - can be excluded from single sex spaces even though they are legally a woman. But it has to be a good reason. Organisations are already fearful of protecting single sex services and spaces for fear of litigation.
The Equality Act was drafted taking into account the GRC process being the way it was - medical diagnosis, 2 years " living in new gender" (whatever TF that means). If you change the GRC process the checks and balances envisioned in tbe Equality Act fall away. And some knob who got one in Scotland becomes a legal woman who is unlikely to be shut out of any single sex space.

flyingbuttress43 · 16/01/2023 21:28

It doesn't matter what the UK Government's motives were: the most important endpoint is that this issue - dismissed by so many up to now as a trivial matter affecting diddly squat- will be thrust into the mainstream. The effect of that will be to open the eyes and ears of those who have not been following the argument. They will be woken up to what this really means for women and children.

Hopefully also, the wider issue of the entryism into our organisations, businesses and, most of all, our universities and schools will also get thrust into the spotlight, so even those in the population who appear to have been living in caves will no longer be able to claim they don't know about it.

It's obvious Sturgeon wanted a face-off with Westminster to boost independence support by claiming Westminster is bullying Scotland. I think she has chosen the wrong issue here.

DarkShade · 16/01/2023 21:29

Brilliant, thanks!

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 21:33

She'll go on and on about how Westminster is overstepping its authority and hope nobody actually looks at what the thing is.
For the avoidance of doubt, the thing lets rapists into women's prisons.
Not exactly the civil rights issue but f the decade.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 16/01/2023 21:35

I can't believe what the Scottish Parliament has come to.

This was always going to happen. SNP (in this case Sturgeon) need to fight with Westminster to stay in power. It would never have got to this point over a sensible issue, it has to be something extreme. And the lack of a second chamber really doesn’t help matters.

I’m very pro serious reform of HoL (and hate FPTP), but the Scottish Parliament has given an excellent example of the dangers of proportional representation, coalitions and a lack of second chamber. An extreme minority opinion would be able to pass into law with little scrutiny and oversight despite being in no manifesto, and with a serious risk to the safety, dignity and privacy of a large proportion of citizens.

My experience of teens at the moment is that most are sensible and good, with occasional bout of “you old so you just don’t understand”. But they soon learn to listen. Fads come and go as often as most of us get a new hair style. Being trans is falling out of fashion. Very quickly, those who actually are will still be so, but those who are falling victim to the hype will decrease in number.

But tonight I’m mostly celebrating for the women and girls in Scotland. A huge sigh of relief, in the short term at least. And for the rest of us - more sunlight can only be a good thing.

FrancescaContini · 16/01/2023 21:38

Hallelujah!

Resisterance · 16/01/2023 21:39

TFFT. Common sense prevails

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 21:39

What the UK government could have done short of invoking this bit of the Scotland Act, is to get all the relevant departments (Home Office, MoJ, Education, Health, DCMS &whoever) to issue formal guidance on what it expects organisations to do to protect single sex spaces and to avoid recognising a Scottish GRC if it isn't accompanied by a UK one). And let the GoodLawProject or whoever take it to Judicial Review - and hope for a positive outcome.
But it's not enough to flush this turd away.

Mollyollydolly · 16/01/2023 21:42

Listening to Iain Dale on LBC and feeling a bit dispirited. No focus whatsoever on women's rights and how many Scottish women feel. Calls from trans people and talking about the implications for independence, twenty minutes left and I'm hoping some amazing Scottish woman is going to get through and explain it all .. women really are fucking invisible.

MichaelFabricantWig · 16/01/2023 21:47

Great news, for now at least, but I see it getting ugly

purpledalmation · 16/01/2023 21:48

Yes!! Grist to Nicola's mill though. I wonder if it was the intention?

Oh, do listen to this LBC interview for a cheering performance from Maggie Chapman. Smile

Yes. That was the sole point.

It's categorically NOT about trans people.

Mollyollydolly · 16/01/2023 21:55

I will thank you. Interesting all the trans people who rang up Iain Dale disagree with the Scottish legislation.
