www.thepinknews.com/2023/01/16/jasmine-star-mack-violentely-killed-in-washington-dc/

A black trans-women was stabbed to death in the US, believed to be the first transperson to fall victim to a violent hate crime in the US this year.

“Her murder is a reminder that trans lives, and particularly black trans lives, are under increasing threat as a wave of anti-trans legislation continues to sweep the US.
“Anti-trans legislators – and the media that enables them – spread misinformation and influence public attitudes, fuelling hate towards trans people,” Madeleine said.

A horrible homicide. But there is no evidence in that article showing that the killing was a hate crime.

Pink News also writes this:

A report released ahead of Trans Day of Remembrance (20 November) 2022 revealed that between 1 October, 2021 and 30 September, 2022 at least 327 trans and gender-diverse people have been killed around the world just for being themselves.

Globally, 27 per cent of victims died in their own homes, with 35 per cent of killings happening in the street.

Most (95 per cent) reported victims were trans women or femmes. A majority of victims (65 per cent) were people of colour, and almost half (48 per cent) were known to be sex workers.

Murders are horrible, but, once again, there is nothing to tell us why those particular individuals died, and it is incorrect to assume that a transgender person who is killed must have been killed for being transgender. Some probably were killed for the kinds of reasons many homicide victims are killed in general (domestic violence, street crime, gang violence).

I am glad to see that the total numbers of these dreadful deaths are so low for transgender people. No number of homicides is acceptable, and the rates at which sex workers are killed is a giant problem (also for women in prostitution in general), but the global numbers here suggest that most transgender people don't have to worry about being killed (or for being killed for being transgender).

Interview with Maggie Chapman (sorry if linked already) I hadn't realised quite how batshit she is. Complete extremist. How the fuck did she get elected?

Actually after years of being pro trans a great deal of my dd's and ds's friends are waking up the cold hard reality of what is happening to women and girls' rights. They are now questioning, very seriously, what has been drummed into them, and are openly on the case. They remain respectful of choice, but seem to feel very strongly about the erosion of another vulnerable group.

So I wouldn't count on your brainwashing to fix the future, I think you will find the backlash in the younger generation is already afoot. It took them a while, but all of these wonderful mothers are pointing out how it will be for them during a smear test with a man called Sharon, or sharing a shower with poppy who has a penis and the real threat to women's sports, rape in prisons and everything else in between.

WE are educating tomorrow's world, not you, and not your well funded groups seeping into our schools and universities margritapie spreading more and more misgyony.

The fightback has landed in parliament at long last.

Exactly this.

The SNP and their trans extremist allies will face the backlash when young people and young women especially realise how these groups have put them at risk and cynically exploited their compassion and importantly their lack of experience.

There’s a word beginning with G for that.

I am very much looking forward to the sunlight that will be coming and in the end democracy will be stronger because we fight for it.

"the Scottish government is likely to mount a legal challenge in response."

There's still a chance...

Anyway it would appear most gender-criticals are the older generation. Not to worry, just give it another couple of decades and you will find most of society will be LGBT+ supportive.

Even if it doesn't pass this time, it will in the not-too-distant future :)

Ye raging, aye?

I'd be interested to hear what Scots think about this? It affects so few compared to other hot issues at the moment. Surely Nicola has bigger more important issues to follow? And I don't mean her bloody referendum.

I was one of the many Scottish women who wrote to Alister Jack to ask him to invoke section 35. The GRR Bill was poor legislation and the Scottish Government were determined to ignore any cross border issues or any clashes with the (reserved) EQA2010 legislation in their unhinged zeal to pass the the Bill through. Various political parties had to lay down a whip to ensure that their members voted for the Bill and the SNP faced the biggest revolt of SNP MSP's since they came to power.

I can't believe what the Scottish Parliament has come to.

And yes, SO many more important issue for Scotland to be focusing on just now - the worst drug death rate in Europe being just one of a litany of issues.

PizzaNinja · 16/01/2023 20:23

Poor Pie, it must be dreadfully upsetting. Never mind eh, fantastic news for the rest of us: it’s a start 👍

NotBadConsidering · 16/01/2023 20:26

How boringly predictable that trans people would be painted as the victims by Sturgeon of such political wrangling.

The SNP either genuinely believe in the GRR and are happy to throw women and girls under the bus for it or they see an opportunity of the GRR to play the “Meddling Westminster” card for independence and are happy to throw women and girls under the bus for it. Either way it reeks of misogyny.

Oh aye, she's claiming she doesn't know what sex she is. Because she's not had her chromosomes tested.

She's 43 years old and apparently doesn't know what sex she is.

It's fucking gobsmacking.

JanesLittleGirl · 16/01/2023 20:29

I hate to be a Jeremiah but this isn't UKGOV riding to the rescue of Scottish women. The sole reason that S35 has been invoked is that UKGOV has received legal advice that the Scottish GRR act impinges on matters reserved to UKGOV (the EA). The action isn't concerned with whether the act is good law, poor law or totally batshit crazy law.

It is possible that the only impingement is single sex schools for 16+ year olds and that changing the age for obtaining a GRC in Scotland would be sufficient. I don't know but I'm not a lawyer.

On the positive side, it has bought some time; it provides the opportunity to expose the whole thing to the disinfectant of sunlight and, by the time it rocks up in front of the Supreme Court, the UKGOV may be forced to define the meaning of sex in the EA.

Good news for Scotland and the rest of the UK! It shines a big light on the craziness of the gender recognition bill. If anyone was blissfully unaware before they'll be more informed than ever as this all unfolds.

The impingement is much greater than the age issue. It removes the need for gender dysphoria and when read in conjunction with the Haldane judgement it impacts the definitions of the relevant protected characteristics. Those PC also form the basis of the Public Sector Equality Duty in the Equality Act 2010.

I think NS has made a big mistake here. I am in Scotland and GC (and not old either).

I voted yes in the indy ref and have been an SNP and NS supporter in the past. As much as I would love Scotland to be independent, I can not and will not support independence under the current leadership. The GRR is terrible legislation and very unpopular.

Rather than being upset at the "mean" UK Government blocking this, I and I am sure many many others are desperate for the grown ups to step in and sort this mess out.

I agree with you on this
