Just read about this.

Absolutely dreadful. And yet the government are giving them pets to detain people they think may be wanting to walk slowly...

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/01/2023 11:39

BBC reported that 9 times he was reported/investigated and nothing was done.

ArabellaScott · 16/01/2023 11:41

Appalling. When will the police actually tackle what is clearly a major fucking issue and risk?

ArabellaScott · 16/01/2023 11:42

All the effort spent on their pissing useless fucking non-crime incidents, chasing women for misgendering, bullshit bullshit bullshit.

While men rape with impunity and the fucking implicit support of the authorities.

I'm fucking outraged and so fucking sick of it.

I had to stop reading the article in the Times because it was making me feel sick.

inkjet · 16/01/2023 11:45

I don’t know much about vetting - is it just convictions that would show up? It says he’d previously been reported for domestic abuse and burglary but was still able to join the Met.

'The Met has apologised after it emerged he had come to the attention of police over nine incidents, including rape allegations, between 2000 and 2021.

Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray, the Met's lead for professionalism, said Carrick's offending was "unprecedented in policing".

"We should have spotted his pattern of abusive behaviour and because we didn't, we missed opportunities to remove him from the organisation," she said.

"We are truly sorry that being able to continue to use his role as a police officer may have prolonged the suffering of his victims."'

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 11:48

@ArabellaScott - exactly! Exactly this

AnneShirleysNewDress · 16/01/2023 11:48

Wasn't he is the same department as Wayne Cousins?

LaughingPriest · 16/01/2023 11:50

Well to lots of people 'rape allegations' means 'a woman is lying about being raped' so they can happily dismiss it Angry

LaughingPriest · 16/01/2023 11:53

How many red flags does someone need to be waving in a POLICE DEPARTMENT ? Are they blind, stupid or just as full of hatred of women as he is?

thedancingbear · 16/01/2023 11:53

The second most disturbing thing with all of this is the evidence of a clear pattern of the Police declining to investigate allegations of sex offences, when it's one of their own.

This places them, as individuals and an institution, on the side of the rapists.

Yes

"BBC reported that 9 times he was reported/investigated and nothing was done"

And we criticise Islamic law considering a woman's testimony to be worth half that of a man's.

It reminds me of that Bill Cosby "he said, she said, she said, she said, she said, she said, she said, she said, she said..." headline.

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/01/2023 11:56

This is not a new thing though, domestic violence in police relationships has been covered up for years. We were aware of it 30+ years ago when dating. Main reason I would never date coppers or squaddies. Both jobs where men look out for other men and they attract people because of the power the job affords. Better vetting is needed.

MorvenOfMalvern · 16/01/2023 12:10

Some of the details of lack of due process and procedure must be v hard to admit for the police..there's probably so much more gone in the shredder. The lack of firearms control, the lack of timely rechecks, the absolute refusal to listen to women who found it in them to report....

Surely a full scale inquiry is needed because this case and the failures span multiple forces, decades, victims and employment. None of it is a one off. The number of people involved in facilitating this predator must be legion.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 16/01/2023 12:13

Nine incidents and nothing was done. Yet the Met Police has enough time and resources to go and arrest women at a vigil for a woman who was raped and murdered by a police officer.

Not a resources issue IMO. It's a 'one of us, one of the lads' issue.

20 fucking years they had warnings about him, yet he was able to persecute, coerce, rape and torture 12 women in that time. Bastards

LizzieSiddal · 16/01/2023 12:17

Agree there needs to be a full enquiry into the police, why did Cousins and this animal, get away with it, despite warnings and complaints. Who is responsible for this?

I too felt sick reading the details of this case.

Brefugee · 16/01/2023 12:20

"We should have spotted his pattern of abusive behaviour and because we didn't, we missed opportunities to remove him from the organisation," she said.

well, i understood from the massive police thread here before that they wouldn't recognise the pattern of behaviour. To be frank i think they wouldn't recognise a kipper if it jumped up and slapped them in the face, but here we all are.
Again.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 16/01/2023 12:22

crabby that is so depressing and disturbing.

MorvenOfMalvern · 16/01/2023 12:23

Even in 2021, when they finally actually investigated him for an allegation of rape (the most recent in a catalogue of similar allegations) he WAS NOT suspended. His many other jobs - in the public sector especially - would not remove you from your public facing role while you were under investigation for rape?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/01/2023 12:26

"We should have spotted his pattern of abusive behaviour"

Indeed they should. So why didn't they? and what are they doing about that to ensure they pick up the others like him that may be there now and in the future?

'Just a few bad apples' my backside.

Brefugee · 16/01/2023 12:27

Although the Met’s professional standards unit was informed, Carrick was not re-vetted and counter-corruption officers did not link a string of previous reports of predatory behaviour.

because they are incapable of connecting the dots. Unless reports are being made by a man about a woman he is stalking. And she is fined for harassment because she is reporting his stalking. AND THEN THE STALKER KILLS HER. So the police do listen. Just not to women.

The vetting should be on an annual basis. It should also be randomly carried out on some officers just because, why not? And anyone who has had reports against them should be investigated properly. And when victims don't want to give evidence? perhaps a tiny amount of brain power should be invested in working out why that might be.

No point throwing money and resources at this. It creates more non jobs for people who will help cover up and make a wage on the back of the public outcry.
