I really don't think this is a good idea. There is no issue with the 2004 act, there is an issue with the recent Scottish legislation.

You don’t think there is an issue when the wording of any Act or law can be twisted to allow the travesty that is the GRR?

If the only thing this petition does is force a discussion in parliament that is then reported on and even more people understand the ramifications of this purposes changes, and the that a nation’s government is fully prepared to ignore their constituents on this issue, you don’t think that is a good start?

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/12/2022 11:34

@Helleofabore not really, because the TRAs can and will successfully twist the narrative. Need to focus on the bullshit that's happening now. The GRA even says "transsexual people" which these days sounds quaint! I think repealing the act sounds as if it would also mean exiting the ECHR, which I don't think anyone who isn't very right wing thinks is a good idea. I'm no expert though, I just think it's better to focus on the current issue.

Thelnebriati · 29/12/2022 11:55

@Cherryblossoms85 What evidence do you have for your claim that repealing the GRA means exiting the ECHR?
www.coe.int/en/web/compass/european-convention-on-human-rights

The GRA was only needed while gay marriage was illegal, and was introduced instead of legalising gay marriage. It creates a legal fiction that undermines safeguarding and women's rights. Times have moved on and we no longer demonise gay people.

Helleofabore · 29/12/2022 11:56

Fair enough. I think the discussion most definitely needs to be had and this petition goes hand in hand with the “Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex” petition.

If the GRC is providing a loophole, then it at least needs absolute clarification in the process in how an organisation can enforce the exclusion of any male with or without a GRC.

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/12/2022 11:58

Not sure what's with the shrill tone here. I'm merely voicing my opinion, didn't say it was perfectly informed or "right". It was my reaction to a petition I have signed anyway.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 29/12/2022 12:05

"shrill"

okey doke

Whereareyourshoes · 29/12/2022 12:15

I think it’s good to question things. Who knows what the right thing to do is? Women have asked nicely. Have tried to have meetings which have been targeted by masked trans activists. Been ignored by politicians. Had nasty slurs, death threats and rape threats directed at them. But we still want to have the conversation.

So if anyone else would also like our Parliament to have a conversation about this, please sign ⬇️

Helleofabore · 29/12/2022 12:23

Shrill? What a delight to see on a feminism thread.

ILikeTrueCrime · 29/12/2022 12:28

Signed, hope this stays 'trending'.

For a while Layla Moran’s constituency was one of the darker ones too. I wonder if she still sees gendered souls?

She does. They're everywhere. They don't know they're gendered. And when they get angry, maps turn really red.

Whereareyourshoes · 29/12/2022 12:46

It’s been a while since I’d read this thread from HairyLeggdHarpy on some of the issues with the GRA but it’s worth another read:

It really doesn't matter much what trans activists or genderists say. That's not who we are trying to engage with or communicate with. There is absolutely no point in trying to reason with someone who is incapable of engaged, good faith discussion.

If you could explain how the GRA is part of the ECHR, I'd appreciate it.

(Apologies if my tone is too shrill, it's these damn womanly vocal chords. I'm trying for my Nice Voice but sometimes it just comes out all wrong.)

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/12/2022 13:30

@ArabellaScott I was just looking at the summary which mentioned the ECHR judgement as giving rise to the GRA because the legislation before the GRA breached article 8, respect for private life, and article 12, right to marry. So even though as others have pointed out gay marriage legislation removes the breach of article 12, what about article 8? I dont think the 2004 legislation is the issue. It's the non application of it - transferring male prisoners to female prisons seemingly on their say so. It all makes me so angry, the idiocy.

ArabellaScott · 29/12/2022 14:14

legislation before the GRA breached article 8, respect for private life

IDK, I'd say women were also entitled to 'private life' free of males, so it seems to me that GRA threatens that for women.

Well I've just discovered I'm blocked by H from Steps, so I'm quite happy 😂

BigglyBee · 29/12/2022 14:48

The map is based on percentages. I live in the Western Isles, which is dark red. However, since the population of the WI is only about 25000, only 23 people actually signed. Me and 22 others. I feel quite encouraged, actually.

I'm jealous. However, I only joined Twitter yesterday, so there is hope for me yet!

Boiledbeetle · 29/12/2022 19:56

Ooh would you look at the number on that map.

Still no change on the remaining five grey areas though
