OK it's really pissing me off...does anyone know anyone in Middlesbrough. They are a blob of grey currently bringing down the good name of North East England.

@Buzzinwithbez excellent.

Melroses · 28/12/2022 17:47

Rights are contained within the Equality Act so no one will lose any rights.

Whereareyourshoes · 28/12/2022 17:48

I don’t want to remove gender reassignment from the Equality Act but I would like a debate in Parliament about repeal of the GRA and I would like the Equality Act clarified to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex. Wouldn’t that be wonderful if we could have protection for both trans people and also for the group formerly known as women who suffer from oppression due to their sex.

And as for looking terrible, not sure there’s much worse than our MSPs giving easier access to rapists to change the sex on their birth certificates.

EndlessTea · 28/12/2022 17:54

I think ‘gender reassignment’ should be removed because ‘gender’ and ‘reassignment’ don’t have a fixed meaning. Any discrimination based on gender non-conformity is already covered by the protected characteristics of sex and sexual orientation.

Waitwhat23 · 28/12/2022 17:59

EvilBee · 28/12/2022 17:35

Stating the obvious, Arabella, but you do realise that when you say things like 'repeal the GRA' and threaten rights under article 8, you make it very easy for trans people to just point and say "these people are literally lobbying to remove our rights"?

Same with those who want to get rid of 'gender reassignment' in the EA - you're literally saying "I want to remove the long-held rights of a minority" and evidencing it for them.

However many likes and retweets you can muster on Twitter, in actual reality, this is not a winning strategy. One person I know has listed an absolute ton of times when gender critical activists have stated these exact things and it looks absolutely terrible.

Stonewall and other lobbying organisations are lobbying to remove the single sex exemptions from the EQA2010, despite the continuous claims by TRA's that they aren't fighting to remove rights pertaining to single sex services and spaces (and 'rights aren't a pie' yadda yadda yadda)

womansplaceuk.org/2018/06/25/references-to-removal-of-single-sex-exemptions/

That and the Scottish Government rejecting amendments to restrict the right for sex offenders to get a GRA is absolutely terrible.

Women asking for sex to be clarified as, you know, actual sex and not some nebulous idea of gender or asking for a law which in effect allows for a ridiculous legal fiction, or asking for a clarification of what the term gender reassignment encompasses is not terrible, however much TRA's dislike it.

Waitwhat23 · 28/12/2022 18:00

Should read 'legal fiction to be repealed'

HopRockers · 28/12/2022 18:05

I'm always interested to know why it's just sex that people think they should have the right to change on all their official documents - why not age or nationality on a person's say so. Arguably both these things are far far less binary than sex.

I assume it's because these things would have real world implications for the important humans as well as you know actual women.

Bookworm333 · 28/12/2022 18:09

I've signed. Signed something else the other day also, which I think is the 2nd petition this thread talks about. Is it just the 2 petitions going or anything else I've missed?

Equality Act, Repeal GRA - have you missed the RSE content one?

There is one asking for single sex swimming pool changing rooms. And one asking for the GRA to be 'reviewed' in terms of how it interacts with the EA.

It's sad that there are so many holes that need plugging that I'm losing track I go to sign one and it tells me I've already done it, but I've probably missed ones.

Skyellaskerry · 28/12/2022 18:29

I bet Nicola wishes this map indicated support for Indy!

Found the swimming pool one here

(& got the duplicate signature email to prove it 😆)

That was me last week. I’ve calmed down a bit since then.

Very angry. Startled next doors dog.

Bookworm333 · 28/12/2022 19:29

Thanks @HopRockers, had missed the third. Now signed and also asked my OH also. Such a relief to see I'm not the only one losing sleep over this!

Hosebanpipe · 28/12/2022 19:38

Signed

Unsure33 · 28/12/2022 19:43

I actually asked the question because Scottish women are such strong women how has this happened ? I don’t quite understand why but the answer was that independence was dangled again and some felt that trumped womens rights ?

ArabellaScott · 28/12/2022 19:43

It's good to see this gaining ground. Looks like it will comfortably hit 10k.

It's the 'wheesht for Indy' attitude - independence being the most important thing and everything else can be sorted out afterwards. Basically 'shut up women, we'll get to you later' I.e. never.

As to how it happened, there's always been a push for us to be the most 'progressive' place and the forthrightedness and general take no shit attitude of Scottish women has taken a back seat to this.

I honestly believe instead of all this 'be kind' stuff, the first person to say (in all seriousness) 'sex is a spectrum' should have been met outright with a 'of course it isn't, get a grip of yourself' instead of the pandering that's got us to where we are now.

Boiledbeetle · 28/12/2022 20:35

Ooh So we are now down to 6 areas on 0 signatures. Now I'm weirdly invested in seeing every constituency be represented on this bill.

So the hold outs are:

West Tyrone
Tamworth
Leicester East
Harrow East
Ilford South
Middlesbrough

I don't know anyone in any of those places to badger though.

Buzzinwithbez · 28/12/2022 22:21

I've a friend in one of those but her parent isn't well so I don't want to badger her. Given that there are signatures from there on the EA one, I'm sure someone will find it soon!

Boiledbeetle · 28/12/2022 22:55

Oh I know they will. I'm just impatient, which is why come Christmas morning i had no presents left to open.

Boiledbeetle · 28/12/2022 23:56

I'm off to bed, hopefully, please please please, to sleep.

Scotland still blindingly looking more pissed off than anywhere else and it's nearly at 8000. And there's still the annoying grey spots.

goodnight women of the web
