@GussetGripper

Do take a bow! (At least, I really think this is you?!)

The whole thing just screams indoctrination and an unhealthy mind to me.
The women around her thought they were in a safe space, that clearly made them feel very unsafe and uncomfortable. If you hurt women in your goal to protect women, you’re not part of any solutions.

If you were a woman in the Scottish Parliament today & you thought you were in a 'safe space', then I'm not sure how we can help you.

HootyMcboob76 · 23/12/2022 21:56

"If you hurt women in your goal to protect women, you’re not part of any solutions."

I COMPLETELY AGREE. That is why Nicola Sturgeon is an arse. She is hurting thousands of women and girls to "protect" the rights of what she see's as another kind of "women" (transwomen).

Doesn't make any sense.

crunchermuncher · 23/12/2022 23:12

Those complaining about it being undignified/ obscene / tacky put me in mind of one of Kurtz's monologues from Apocalypse Now :

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!"

Oh stop it, she is completely covered. It's a merkin fastened to a pair of tights.
The action has historical significance.

Here is a painting called The Persian Women by Otto van Veen

"This painting depicting a scene from Plutarch’s Brave Women (Moralia 246A-B), is generally regarded as a companion of Otto van Veen’s Amazons and Scythians; Persian Women depicts them raising their skirts to mock their menfolk fleeing a battlefield: “Whither are you rushing so fast, you biggest cowards in the whole world? Surely you cannot, in your flight, slink in here whence you came forth.” Thus shamed, the men stop to face the enemy once more, and win a crushing victory."

It's also reminiscent of the Sheela na Gig
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/08/big-vagina-energy-the-return-of-the-sheela-na-gig

Well done Elaine. I absolutely sobbed watching that.
You display the utter fury that we all felt at today's decision.

Thanks for the explanation, ofwarren.

TheBiologyStupid · 24/12/2022 00:23

ApocalipstickNow · 23/12/2022 09:28

Clearly she should have

“just” thrown a smoke bomb
pissed herself in public
played keyboards with her genitals
attached a dildo to a rainbow outfit

because all that would be absolutely fine and minimised by our friendly neighbourhood drive by shamers

This!

TheBiologyStupid · 24/12/2022 00:31

Blister · 23/12/2022 17:46

Pubic not public .

Well, in this particular case...! ;o)

I don't understand the analogy.

And Lang
Where is the dignity for women in prison, locked up with abusive men?

That is the dignity we are fighting to regain.

SueVineer · 24/12/2022 01:15

VaggieMight · 23/12/2022 13:53

I'm interested to know from those criticising the merkin display, exactly what is an appropriate response to male sex offenders being given access to women's single-sex spaces?

That’s not it imo. If we criticize men for stripping naked in public and playing the piano with their penis flashing a pretend Fanny isn’t an effective protest. It will just turn people off. We are asking for privacy and dignity-how does flashing help that?

I think we have every right to be angry but what she did doesn’t help imo.

QuinkWashable · 24/12/2022 07:03

Sorry but I also find this disappointing to see. Let's face it, if a man wearing tights with visible underwear had flashed a merkin there'd be cries of "pervert" and "deviant" all over the show.

If only that was what they did - the closest we get is a bloke pouring piss over himself whilst wearing a sheer dress with a semi.

Pretending there's not a very big difference between a fully dressed (if costumed) woman, yelling for her rights in parliament, and a bloke playing with his moobs while yelling violent abuse at women in the street is just yet more of the massively mis-matched standards expected from women vs. men.

tackling · 24/12/2022 07:14

I have to say, I don't get this one myself. I think it makes the gender critical movement look a bit insane, so I am reading this thread with real confusion.

Having said that, they were incredibly brave to protest, here I am hiding behind anonymous usernames and keeping quiet at work, so who knows.

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 07:38

I thought it was pure genius and has contextual historical significance.

The modern equivalent of throwing yourself under the kings horse without clogging up the nhs.

I also reflected that society is very happy to film and traffic women and girls' genitals when they want to, but gets in a tizz when we take control with fun fur and sticky back tape.

The resistance is coming, and mine has funky fur…

brilliant @Bosky, I hope you're feeling better today, sending immune power vibes and a very merry Xmas!

Whereareyourshoes · 24/12/2022 07:40

I love Elaine.

I can understand her frustration and anger at our MSPs who have refused to listen to women.

I am full of gratitude for the work Elaine does to improve women’s health - a matter of life and death which is not taken seriously enough by our politicians.

And this thread can now be a reminder to do some pelvic floor exercises.

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 07:47

Sorry but I also find this disappointing to see. Let's face it, if a man wearing tights with visible underwear had flashed a merkin there'd be cries of "pervert" and "deviant" all over the show.

The difference is that it's a man and it would highlight the lunacy of faking womanhood. Wolf in sheep's merkin.

Also analogies of a dick being flashed in such a situation- males cause the issues Elaine us protesting.

They rape. They flash us to coerce us. I've been flashed in an enclosed space by a stranger. It was about control and threat.

Womens bodies are vulnerable. A merkin can't actually physically harm anyone.

Blister · 24/12/2022 07:52

Elaine, if you are on here, please can you do one of Joan of arc next? Complete with flag and breasts?

UrsulaPandress · 24/12/2022 07:54

Well hasn’t this divided us.

WarriorN · 24/12/2022 08:13

Dr Em

Men use their genitals as acts of war.

Men flashing has an entirely different impact to women, who rarely do.

That historical thread is amazing ofwarren.

Lemonyfuckit · 24/12/2022 08:15

This is marvellous.

I'm disappointed in the women who are disappointed with the form of protest - all the tutting and head wagging - even gender critical women it seems can't help holding other women to some higher standard of purity and demure behaviour (albeit it's a pair of tights and a merkin for goodness sake, enough with the pearl clutching, it's not actually indecent at all, it's not intimidating, it's not violent so in my book it in no way 'stoops to their level', it's furious yet humorous and steeped in historical significance).

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2022 08:15

UrsulaPandress · 24/12/2022 07:54

Well hasn’t this divided us.

It certainly has, but love it or loath it it's firstly got historical context in its favour, secondly there was no actual private body parts on display, but thirdly and most importantly it's got into the main stream press, they can also show the actual video footage because there is no actual nudity which puts it into context when read with the articles.

This will reach a big swathe of people who wouldn't usually read these articles, as you can't help but click on an article when you see that still of her with her skirt lifted. If only a small percentage go what the fuck and look into it further then her job is done.

It might seem to some a regressive step, but being kind, writing letters, holding placards, trying to speak politely hasnt worked. This has. Because it sure as hell has got people talking. And that's never a bad thing, whichever side of any particular argument you are on.

I didn't compare it to that though did I? I said if a man had flashed a merkin....

So your anger at my "mismatched standards" is misplaced.

Again, I didn't make any analogies about a penis being flashed.

Breakfastinbedonhols · 24/12/2022 08:27

Elaine is bloody brilliant.
She is incredibly funny and passionate about helping women with incontinence and regaining pelvic floor strength.
When I first saw the footage I was shocked, but that’s what it was supposed to do. She didn’t streak like protesters on a football pitch, she showed fake pubic hair OVER tights. People are shocked by this because women are supposed to be reserved, tut if they are annoyed and must most definitely not ever show a pubic hair out of place ever.
I wish I had the guts to be more like Elaine.

If it helps, I'm not pearl-clutching or shocked or offended or whatever.

I just don't get it as a form of protest or see how it helps, I feel like it backfires and makes us look like weirdos.

I don't know. A bit like "protester rams their head against a wall, wow! Amazing!"

Exactly

ApocalipstickNow · 24/12/2022 08:37

Whatever you think of it what the fuck are women supposed to do as protest?

Write a heartfelt opinion piece, supportive of trans people’s rights to live their lives in safety but wanting women’s needs taken into account?
A peaceful protest- or even a meeting - where women who have suffered violence from men can speak about their lived experiences?
set up a women’s service for raped women, to provide ONE space out of many which is man free?

All those things get you branded a transphobic bigot who should not be listened to because you’re as far right as Hitler and therefore deserving of fear, threats and assault.

There’s nothing women can do that won’t be criticised yet whatever MRAs do is minimised, excused, glossed over, NAMALT’d, ignored or celebrated.
