www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/jk-rowling-women-abuse-service-b2243534.htm

I actually expected The Independent to be a little more....Independent!

And it’s not even as if there’s any change for transwomen, except maybe a little more capacity in the existing services. If they have access to a service supporting them, why do they need access to this one?

Maybe, for some TRA’s, it’s more important that transwomen are affirmed by women (especially if that affirmation needs to be forced) than that abused transwomen get the actual support they need

No 'maybe' about it!

skilpadde · 12/12/2022 15:07

To be fair it's not the independent criticising it, they're quoting random unnamed accounts on twitter who are criticising it.

It's usually the Daily Mail that creates a story revolving around tweets from Mr Outraged of Oldham and Mrs Furious of Farnborough.

Pathetic to see the Independent stoop to this level of "journalism".

This is a fundamentally amazing new service for women in and around Edinburgh, but the Independent has to spin exclusively women's services as a bad thing. You'd never guess that it's under their Lifestyle > Women section.

Bless. Trying to keep the walls up while the roof is crashing in on the nonsense

EsmaCannonball · 12/12/2022 15:18

Men are violent to women
Women set up spaces to escape those men
Men claim those spaces are bigoted
Men colonize the spaces
Women are forced to set up new spaces
Women are the villains in all this.

Imagine being the sort of person whose response to a much loved children's author personally funding a rape crisis centre for women is that she's a bad person. Imagine being the journalist who writes that story. I wonder if Kate Ng is proud of herself.

I’m embarrassed for her. Imagine being so utterly blinkered and oblivious to how this comes across to anyone who isn’t marinaded in gender identity ideology.

Kate: “Jo Rowling set up a facility for women who’ve been raped because she’s a shitty bigot who hates trans people”.

Normal people: Confused

NecessaryScene · 12/12/2022 15:21

Women are the villains in all this.

"Reframe your trauma."
"No, not like that!!!!"

Exactly!

Bobbins36 · 12/12/2022 15:24

So, Sistah Space- a centre for only POC DV victims to access - is ok but Beira’s Place - a centre for female only victims of violence - is not. Why?

Helleofabore · 12/12/2022 15:30

Just imagine, women having a service of their own. And that the new centre should also then have a legitimate seat at any discussion around the provision of women's trauma care in Scotland. I mean, I could not imagine that the management of the centre would be excluded from any discussion about setting direction regarding VAWAG in Scotland would they?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/12/2022 15:34

Of course they object.Women meant to be useful to men and have no business meeting, talking, organising, discussing their rape or even undressing without the permission and presence of men.
The new Victorian era for women.

Helleofabore · 12/12/2022 15:43

The new twist is that they are complaining about the fact that they believe that she should have opened the centre 20 years ago. And that she is now doing it because she hates a group of the population.

The reality is that Joanne Rowling has always supported women and girls directly. And she is now even more financially in the position to help considering she has recent book sales and movie deals. She can now do more.

And she is .

And she is doing far more than many other celebrities...and they HATE it.

But I really love the thought that it will be the management of this centre that will be right there with the ability to shape policy recommendations for Scotland.

Love that thought....

Ramblingnamechanger · 12/12/2022 15:44

So pleased to see this being set up. Thank you to JKR and the other women involved. No, not you Midhrul, or Nicola.

endofthelinefinally · 12/12/2022 15:51

Well isn't it nice that one group of people have the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre all for themselves now? Surely they should be pleased.

NecessaryScene · 12/12/2022 15:51

The new twist is that they are complaining about the fact that they believe that she should have opened the centre 20 years ago.

Fun being a critical social justice warrior, isn't it? (Or cloaking your hatred under that guise.) You never need to do anything, you can just carp at those who do.

Anyway, were women being told to go away or reframe their trauma by the state-funded services 20 years ago? Must have missed it. This is a direct response to that specific state of affairs, which seems to be quite novel.

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 16:02

One single service for females (excluded in many cases now from the existing services) is discriminatory and awful and hateful and Other Words Too?

I shall play my tiniest violin.

I don't care. I really don't. This is nothing more than sour grapes and misogyny, there is no excuse whatsoever for kicking off about this than pure rage that some females will be able to have their needs met outside of TQ+ political control.

Without having to 'reframe their trauma' and 'have their thinking challenged'.

Just fuck off with that misogynist crap.

But bloody hell Jo has pulled a blinder in getting them to tell the general public what this is really all about.

I thought we were all told if we didn't want mixed sex services to go and start our own?

Oh yeah we said. The second any woman does, there'll be a meltdown and a target.

And oh look. The list of things we said would happen and have been proven right is now stretching half way to bloody lands end.

RambamThankyouMam · 12/12/2022 16:17

Maybe one of the very wealthy "women" behind the trans movement (Jennifer Pritzker, Martine whats-his-face, Caitlin Jenner etc) can channel some of their millions into a similar service for transwomen.

TW are not short of services. They do not have an access problem.

I love JKR
Well done

'The launch of Beira’s Place has been criticised by LGBT+ allies who accused Rowling of “discriminating” against trans women if the service does not accept them.'

Translation:

'The launch of a rape crisis service for women has been criticised by LGBT+ allies who accused Rowling of discriminating against males if the service does not accept them'.

It's disgusting. We can't even have a safe space for a woman who has been attacked by a man without men instantly pressuring it.

Sophoclesthefox · 12/12/2022 16:35

TW are not short of services. They do not have an access problem.

Indeed. Though, to be fair, most of the trans focused organisations seem to concentrate their efforts as much on lobbying and “awareness raising” as they do on offering substantive support.

Which is interesting.

FunnyTalks · 12/12/2022 16:40

Surely all the women working at Beira's place and all the women who choose it over services that are "inclusive" are considered mahoosive transphobes? Why would trans activists even want transwomen to go there?

It would be an interesting piece of research.

"Once a service has been captured by and become the servant of a political agenda it is no longer able to commit time, focus, objectivity and quality on the service as well as work for the lobby, to the loss of their service users. Discuss.'
