www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/jk-rowling-women-abuse-service-b2243534.htm

I actually expected The Independent to be a little more....Independent!

OP posts:
KvotheTheBloodless · 12/12/2022 13:59

The link leads me to 'Page not found'

RoyalCorgi · 12/12/2022 14:00

That URL didn't work for me - I think you need the bit at the beginning:

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/jk-rowling-women-abuse-service-b2243534.html

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2022 14:05

I googled 'Rowling independent Beira' and found 2 different stories (one may be the same link as above. Don't know why it doesn't work).

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/jk-rowling-beira-edinburgh-violence-scottish-labour-b2243516.html

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/jk-rowling-women-abuse-service-b2243534.html

nauticant · 12/12/2022 14:12

The link in the OP is missing the "l" (lowercase L) from the end of the URL.

ArabellaScott · 12/12/2022 14:16

That was quick.

Janie143 · 12/12/2022 14:17

Why the quote marks "unmet need" it very clearly is unmet for cunty women who need space from current or former peniswomen

ArabellaScott · 12/12/2022 14:19

'The launch of Beira’s Place has been criticised by LGBT+ allies who accused Rowling of “discriminating” against trans women if the service does not accept them.'

Translation:

'The launch of a rape crisis service for women has been criticised by LGBT+ allies who accused Rowling of discriminating against males if the service does not accept them'.

WolverineBlueyy · 12/12/2022 14:20

What an incredibly bad faith take. "Facing a backlash" indeed. Not from anyone with half a brain.

ArabellaScott · 12/12/2022 14:20
  • I should add that the service makes no mention of males, or trans people, as far as I've seen I'm just translating that para from the Independent.

Nobody can make anything for women without people asking 'what about the males'.

Same old, same old.

RoyalCorgi · 12/12/2022 14:24

Imagine being the sort of person whose response to a much loved children's author personally funding a rape crisis centre for women is that she's a bad person. Imagine being the journalist who writes that story. I wonder if Kate Ng is proud of herself.

JacquelinePot · 12/12/2022 14:31

Plus ça change. They did the same thing with the Giggle app.

Them: x service is "inclusive" of penis people. If you don't like it, set up your own service
Women: OK [sets up service for women]
Also them: awaaaaa, not fair [scweam and scweam until sick, try to shut women's service down]

Absolutely pathetic.

Kate Ng had to find inflammatory Twitter quotes but then didn’t post the replies to those quotes, which quickly showed how wrong the original quotes were. If she was an independent journalist looking to be unbiased surely saying this service is well within the law is what she should be doing after those quotes. Also Ng should have mentioned that there are other services in Edinburgh that, if you need a women-only group, you are only welcome if you can ‘reframe your trauma’ to have biological men in the group too. But obviously these other services are open to transwomen.

Shoddy journalism.

Lockheart · 12/12/2022 14:44

To be fair it's not the independent criticising it, they're quoting random unnamed accounts on twitter who are criticising it.

Regardless of course it's not discriminatory! And there are more than enough women's shelters which accommodate trans women (and of course there is nothing stopping them setting up one just for trans women should they wish).

waterwitch · 12/12/2022 14:47

And it’s not even as if there’s any change for transwomen, except maybe a little more capacity in the existing services. If they have access to a service supporting them, why do they need access to this one?

Maybe, for some TRA’s, it’s more important that transwomen are affirmed by women (especially if that affirmation needs to be forced) than that abused transwomen get the actual support they need

lechiffre55 · 12/12/2022 14:53

If services of this sort are a finite resource based on the limits of funding, like every other service, then surely this is good for everyone? If a female woman who wants to be in a female only space uses this new service, then that is less demand on penis women services, which means more resources for everyone.
Surely this is a good thing?
Unless of course it's all about validation.... "I demand access to all female spaces" "You will submit"
I do like the way that in the JKR annoucement they do seem to be reclaiming the word women. It's for women, and will be a single sex space.

NecessaryScene · 12/12/2022 14:54

And it’s not even as if there’s any change for transwomen, except maybe a little more capacity in the existing services.

Well, that's a big problem. What if all the women stopped going to the services they're allowed into?

You beat me to it :)

Janie143 · 12/12/2022 14:54

Not only is this amazing for the women who need it but the☀️is blinding😎

Indeed. They definitely aren't keen on transwomen only services. I think though women opting out is going to be an increasing trend.

lechiffre55 · 12/12/2022 14:58

I suspect that any service that was only used by penis women would lose popularity and exciting urges attraction very quickly. That might look rather odd to the general public.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 12/12/2022 14:59

>The website does not explicitly state that Beira’s Place would not allow trans women to use its services. The Independent has contacted Beira’s Place for clarification.

lmao. Hope they’re left hanging, or that they get a copy/paste of the words on the website (which are 100% clear unless you’re an idiot who pretends to think TWAW.)

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 12/12/2022 15:02

What a pile of misogynistic shit the Independent is

I think this nails it. That is exactly why it's seen as a problem. The service humans may not be present to provide the "service"

RoyalCorgi · 12/12/2022 15:04

I imagine Mridul Wadhwa, the trans woman CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, who thinks that women who want women-only services are "bigoted" and should expect to be "challenged on your prejudices" is less than happy.

If you're a woman in Edinburgh who's been raped and in need of sympathetic, woman-centred support, where are you going to turn? Beira's Place - or the organisation that thinks you're a bigot?

I hope that the trustees of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre have a good, hard think about their priorities.
