Such heart warming news, thank you JKR 😇

Whereareyourshoes · 12/12/2022 12:53

I am grateful that Kaite has a choice available and I hope they get all the support they need.

I am also extremely grateful that those who need a single sex space to recover from their trauma also now have an option available to them.

💚🤍💜

Zimtsterne · 12/12/2022 13:51

Amazing. And the lovely Camus quote at the end had me tearing up.

As an aside, @AllMumsyWereTheBorrowedClothes might be my favourite MN username ever 😆

RhannionKPSS · 12/12/2022 14:14

Stonewall et all could have set up their own services for Trans people across the UK with the amount of money they have had over the years since they abandoned LGB people.

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 15:39

Cuckoos and nests.

Except falling out of the nest when you're shoved is now a hate crime.

Ramblingnamechanger · 12/12/2022 15:51

What a team. This had to happen . Thank you to JKR and everyone who has made this happen.

DOBARDAN · 12/12/2022 17:17

Thank you so much JKR, and thank you also to all the women who will be running and organising Beira's Place.

Wonderful cheering news on this cold winters day.

KCandtheSunlightBand · 12/12/2022 17:36

What an amazing woman JKR is. We need same in Brighton to help Sarah and others in Sussex.

mach2 · 12/12/2022 19:05

In Vancouver they had rats nailed to the door of the only female rape crisis centre. There's no limit to how low TRAs will stoop.

Morgane (née Ronan) Oger, trans politician, persuaded the council to withdraw funding from the centre. If Rowling is funding Beira's Place then it is immune from such a despicable tactic.

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 19:15

Quite. It will be immune from politically biased and steered funding criteria. And from political control and interference.

In fact it can be entirely woman-centred and do only what those women need to recover.

I hope we see this branch out throughout the UK in time. There are female people in every city now without resources so that male people can have their choice from all the resources. JKR you are magnificent.

CaveMum · 12/12/2022 19:47

I’ve always thought if I won the EuroMillions I’d love to do something “women-centric” with some of the money. A scholarship or research funding into female only medical issues, or something.

Need to buy a ticket first!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/12/2022 19:53

I almost get it. We live in a man's world. I've spent much of my life being a cool girl man pleaser. It took many years after the incident for me to understand that I was experiencing PTSD. It is a scary place to realise you are just a boring statistic and that violence against women and girls is endemic. So I kind of envy her stance; I guess she thinks either that it was all her fault or that she can tell which males are going to be the abusive ones. I wonder if that gives a false feeling of power.

This.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 12/12/2022 22:05

We had to build and fund Womens Shelters in the 70s and we have to do it now.

It makes me want to cry. We are back where we were 50 years ago, and if anything things have regressed rather than the reverse. Nowadays even suffrage colours are taboo and all that is sufficient to get women censored and excluded.

We simply should not be in this position. The fact that we are, half a century into the future from that point, having had those spaces colonized, is unspeakable. And now we have to start again from the bottom up. But at least the start's been made.

People like J K Rowling are a gift to womankind. Targeting victims of rape is just about as low as it gets. But for this movement there's no such thing as too low. They threaten JKR with death, stand outside her home, intimidating and threatening her, tell women to 'reframe our trauma', and relentlessly attack the one women-only rape crisis centre in Vancouver, succeeding in its eventual destruction.

She remains calm, level-headed, polite and articulate. She puts her money where her mouth is and turns her self-made success toward a really positive and useful purpose. If there's any justice whatsoever on this planet, history will judge both sides of this relentless assault against women - those who persecuted us and those who fought for us - accordingly.

Whyjustwhy123 · 12/12/2022 22:19

Thank you JKR and the team around you.

Waitwhat23 · 12/12/2022 22:38

I heard about all this only a couple of hours ago and it properly made me a bit emotional. JKR and all the other amazing women involved are brilliant and I LOVE the fact that because JKR is funding this herself, she can't be threatened by withdrawal of funding or investigation by the Charity Commission - what a glorious middle finger to the Scottish Government.

How entirely predictable that TRA's are drumming their heels. Every other service in the Lothians is mixed sex. Every single one. So much for 'if you want single sex services, set them up then!'.

RhannionKPSS · 13/12/2022 01:07

The TRAs prove exactly why women and girls need single sex care. They just can’t help exposing themselves ( in many ways) and their true intentions. A shower of bawbags & Aunt Lydias especially those in the Scottish Government

mach2 · 13/12/2022 06:38

Can Rowling seek donations without attracting charity law? If her fortune is such that it can be funded in perpetuity then no need, but I was thinking an alternative fund stream might be needed at some point.

The problem is keeping it from being vulnerable to the plainly captured organs of the state.

CharityShopChic · 13/12/2022 09:14

Well done JKR. Putting her money where her mouth is and making a real difference to women and girls in Edinburgh.

Now please stand for First Minister.

CaveMum · 13/12/2022 10:21

@mach2 I imagine she could easily self-fund Beira's Place from her own pocket. Her estimated earnings are now about $100million per year, plus the compound interest on what she already has.

I don't know how much something like this would cost to initiallyset up and fund but I would imagine running costs and salaries for the staff would be under £1 million per year.

JK doesn’t need any of our money, or any government money with all the issues that surround that. It’s not a charity, there won’t be any mugs or t-shirts to buy, no chance of this being captured. It’s self supporting and the board members are excellent. It’s taking years to set this up properly, it’s been planned for a very long time.We can all imagine the effort it has taken just to find a suitable place, never mind keeping it top secret. It’s a huge achievement for all involved and bloody great work from all of them.

RhannionKPSS · 14/12/2022 12:09

And it’s pissed off Maggie Chapman, Sturgeon and the other Aunt Lydias so it’s a win win all round for women and girls

That's the cherry on the delicious, beautifully iced cake.

Although we are all furious about this despicable attack on women, I am so very proud that despite it, we are fighting back. Women from all walks of life are saying NO, crowdfunding for judicial reviews, JKR (the queen that she is) has stood up and provided a model of a woman only space, and there are now numerous organisations that are highlighting the attack on safeguarding every day.

This has shown me that women will simply not be ignored, and that we do have a voice and we won't be silenced.

This is general 3rd wave feminism.

chilling19 · 14/12/2022 18:05

*general = real

MN autocorrect is very strange at times 🤨
