This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

@Kucingsparkles , don't tell anyone our ages. I've not mentioned it...

LoobyDop · 08/12/2022 14:51

That. Married men and single women are the happiest.

mach2 · 08/12/2022 15:04

Tipping my cynical hat to you all this afternoon, I think it's because it's true what we often hear, that marriage is more advantageous to men than women.

Heh! I think not a few are looking to get looked after.

CyanCyan · 08/12/2022 15:11

@MavisMcMinty What did you say to the mother?

Plasticfreefantastic · 08/12/2022 15:22

I share the general lack of enthusiasm for re-coupling if my lovely other half was gone. I do have some very good male friends who do seem like decent sorts which makes me hope that there are other good sorts out there, but I don’t know that I would think finding one or t

Plasticfreefantastic · 08/12/2022 15:23

Such stupid fat fingers.

I’m not finding one of them is important enough to me to try, rather than just stay single.

Britinme · 08/12/2022 15:25

I can tell you that mine came out of the blue. I met him very briefly at a GUT meet-up and then again quite casually (on my part but not his) three months later when he offered to show me around a city I was visiting, and it all took off from there.

Yes, mach, I had a 31-year old patient whose husband remarried 6 months after she died, to a woman who looked exactly like his dead wife. Her mother phoned me about it, deranged with grief that he had “replaced” his dead wife so casually, when she would never be able to - or want to - replace her daughter.

We all experience grief differently of course, but I do wonder at the new wife being so happy to marry someone whose previous wife died only 6 months previously.

it would be a red flag to me to be honest, I’d be concerned about his state of mind and any unresolved grief and family issues and the impact on our relationship. But then I’m older than 31 and in the hopefully unlikely event that something untoward and untimely happens to DH, I would also consider myself done with dating/men etc. And build a new single life.

StephanieSuperpowers · 08/12/2022 15:28

I'd seek out the women at the Fila conference above and harass them to be my new besties and set up a older single lady commune. Imagine how cool that would be? Friends with the old school feminists! Amazing!

I've not read the report yet, but this promises to be interesting: www.mumsnet.com/talk/academics_corner/4693751-david-renton-yes-that-one-on-gender-critical-beliefs-academic-freedom-and-the-right-to-protest

(For those of you who share my inability to remember people's names, Garden Court Chanbers may ring more of a bell )

There's an FWR thread about this now, you might want to link to the academics board thread one on there?

Good idea.

A downside of being single is the single income of course. But even if I were in a relationship I’d want to ensure I was financially secure enough to go it alone so I wasn’t trapped. Very difficult for single people to get on the housing ladder if they don’t have the help of family money.

StephanieSuperpowers · 08/12/2022 15:45

Being older helps there, too. We had it good. Maybe the best lives of people who have ever lived/will ever live.

I’m so glad I’m old and allowed to have pubes and to not do sex that I don’t want to do.

I'd like this as a tee shirt!

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 15:52

Get one made, DameMaud! I'd like one too.

It’s yours, with my blessing. x

Break out the printing kit, Maud!

MavisMcMinty · 08/12/2022 16:43

@CyanCyan What did you say to the mother?

Not much, probably, my job was to listen, and to reassure her that no feelings/emotions are unreasonable.

@funnelfanjo I do wonder at the new wife being so happy to marry someone whose previous wife died only 6 months previously. It would be a red flag to me to be honest

Young widowers with adorable children seem to be a magnet for some women, when I doubt young widows with adorable children would be quite so attractive to men. But I’m probably being sweepingly stereotypical here.

MavisMcMinty · 08/12/2022 16:46

@Britinme Wow, I remember your husband dying suddenly, and can’t believe it’s been 20-odd years already. xx

DameMaud · 08/12/2022 16:47

Great! That's Christmas sorted😉

DameMaud · 08/12/2022 16:49

I had a boyfriend who said a previous girlfriend he was with for a short time asked him to do it to her and he wasn’t comfortable doing it. He said she had some psychological difficulties which seemed to also come out in various ways during sex. I have no idea if there are women who truly enjoy it.

I had a girlfriend many years ago, probably 25 years ago, so before porn culture became quite so omnipresent. She wanted me to treat her roughly, pull her hair etc, but choking was never even thought of. I wouldn't do what she wanted as I knew she'd had a roughish upbringing and expressed regret at how promiscuous she was in her teenage year (her words).

I did wonder whether I was denying her agency, but couldn't bring myself to act that way, not least because I'd get no enjoyment from it.I know what pain is like and I don't see the fun in it ( I had a brief fling some years later where my partner bit me on the testicles).

Britinme · 08/12/2022 17:01

@MavisMcMinty - amazing how long some of us have known each other online! Husband died February 2001, I remarried August 2002.

Just started a thread about this - women being fitted with contraceptive devices without their knowledge or consent.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 17:48

Bloody hell, that's outrageous. How many women has this happened to?
