I've spent the whole morning working outside in the freezing cold and fog. Then I get to come home and see this news. About time.
Has anyone claimed that the Charity Commission are ' transphobic bigots yet'?

Perhaps one of our regular ploppers will oblige?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/12/2022 14:46

Do we know who the trustees are? IE are they TRAs, or are they professionals who actually understand the role and responsibilities of being a trustee?

And they had such excellent witnesses too....

I hope Nicola sturgeon is held to account on this with her vocal, networking/lobbying support and helping mermaids getting a foothold in Scotland (the times, 14/11/22)

I'm on tenterhooks.

"Charity regulation is fascism, based on events that haven't happened."

VestofAbsurdity · 02/12/2022 14:53

Jeez the melodramatic hyperbole in that tweet is off the scale.

Although it seems that they believe Mermaids will lose the LGBA case but for entirely bonkers reasons.

Mermaids was founded in 1995 and staffed solely by volunteers until 2016 when Green became its first member of staff.

I knew they had existed for far longer that SG was involved but I wonder how this happened? I also wonder how many of the originators of MMs are bloody horrified at what it has become?

From memory any parents who didn't follow the instant affirmation path were chased out.

I have a vague recollection of a parent posting on a message board about a dd who had gender dysphoria. The dd didn't want to transition but wanted help with dealing with the gd.

Someone suggested mermaids and the answer was that they were not helpful. Suddenly there was a whole load of new posters calling the parent names and how they were failing the "son"

The original poster said "shit, they've found me" and stopped posting. The newcomers continued to rant for awhile and then disappeared. The regulars of the site were all WTF??? It was very odd.

Birdsweepsin · 02/12/2022 14:53

Don't forget Miriam Cates MP asking a question in the Commons. Thank you to you too Miriam

Yes, I remember that. They tried to shut them down. Until people pointed out how bloody unprofessional it was.

OvaHere · 02/12/2022 15:01

Posted this on the other thread but as this seems to be the main one I shall say it here too.

Good. Not a moment too soon.

Thank you to all the women of Mumsnet both past and present who would not let the subject of safeguarding children and young people drop.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 02/12/2022 15:01

"For over 22 years I was involved with the trans youth support charity Mermaids. 6 of those years I was the CEO, Mermaids is a national charity supporting trans and gender diverse children and young people, and their families and associated professionals. As CEO, my role was to expand our services to deal with an unprecedented growth in demand. Children and their families need support, and we needed to be there for them. I took the charity from a small, volunteer only organisation to a 2 million pound income charity supporting thousands of children, young people and their families every year."

That's quite a business model - promoting an ideology that creates your own service users.

Reading the Times article, it sounds like MM wouldn't/didn't engage with the compliance case so they were forced to do a full inquiry.

The commission said today that Mermaids’ response to the initial compliance case “has not provided the necessary reassurance or satisfied the commission at this stage

You mean Susie Green wouldn't engage.

Hence Green being given an ultimatium on Fri 25th November and leaving and the Charity Commission formally launching an investigation on Mon 28th November.

They have a shit tonne of crap to dish by the sound of it.

ResisterRex · 02/12/2022 15:02

Maya has a thread of things the Charity Commission might want to look at:

Yes, it's a racket. They create these children.

Mermaids statement:

Earlier this year Mermaids decided to carry out a frank and honest appraisal of our internal culture and how we measure up in terms of equity, diversity and inclusion.

As part of this process, we commissioned an independent external report which highlighted a number of significant challenges for us.

We know we must do better and we are absolutely committed to doing so, and will be implementing the report’s recommendations as a priority.

The charity has an unwavering commitment to safeguarding which is, and always will be, our top priority.

We will continue to cooperate fully, openly and with complete transparency with the Charity Commission as its inquiry gets underway.

(I really really hope the internal report gets leaked)

Equality, diversity and inclusion, yes yes yes.

Erm what about safeguarding?

Datun · 02/12/2022 15:04

Christ, the more I think about it the more angry I get. We are so mired in it on here, that sometimes the bigger picture slips out of view.

But it's fucking massive.

Pathologising children's toy preferences and clothing choices to set them on a path of lifelong medication and extreme surgery.

I hope they all go to prison.

crumpet · 02/12/2022 15:05

I just feel sad : for all the children persuaded into transition by Mermaids, for the lack of support for children with real dysphasia, and for Jackie Green too. Am thankful that proper scrutiny is finally (and far too late) happening, but it is a tragedy. I bloody hope those responsible get their just deserts.

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2022 15:06

Kucingsparkles · 02/12/2022 14:21

Can we do a FWR whip-round for a 60-foot-high billboard saying "WE F**KING TOLD YOU SO"?

I'll donate to that shit.

crumpet · 02/12/2022 15:06

Susie Green is probably one of the most successful snake-oil sellers in history

Baroness Nichol:

"So far my 6,000 plus formal complaints against my being a member of the House ofLords all seem to have come from, through or scented by Mermaids;a very fishy business indeed 🎣🎏🐡"

6000 plus!! Well, I am not surprised. She uses confronting language and writes letters so I guess she would be quite the target.
