Theres a phone number for a mo ? I forget, cba looking again rn, I'm very tempted to phone to find out a bit more. Then when I find out its mermaids, just say "erm, oh dear, never mind then dear"

Boiledbeetle · 26/11/2022 22:31

If its a different Leeds based charity they picked a bad time to advertise as I imagine this advert is going to get some interesting?!? Applications.

TheBiologyStupid · 26/11/2022 22:50

Boiledbeetle · 26/11/2022 22:02

Oh hang on that vacancy requires a full dbs check so it can't be mermaids

😂

RedToothBrush · 26/11/2022 23:08

To recap.

Charity commission start investigating Mermaids in September.

Jackie Green apparently deletes twitter account on 7th November.

Mermaids do their summing up for the LGB Alliance Court case on 7th November.

The charity commission Council also voice their position on 7th November:

Iain Steele Charity Commission Council says in court "Charity Commission has concerns why Mermaids is attempting to go beyond the normal charities framework here."

Final day of the court case 8th November.

Susie Green goes on holiday on 10th November.

The Guardian publishes a piece on 'what's going on with Mermaids' on 17th November quoting Green exclusively. Whilst she is still apparently on holiday.

Susie Green returns from holiday on 22nd November.

The Guardian publish an article questioning social contagion and teen girls identifying as trans on 24th November.

Mermaids tweets that its under attack please donate tweet on 24th November. Presumably whilst Green was still firmly in charge and didn't think she was going anywhere from how it reads, despite the obvious problems.

Susie Green leaves Mermaids on 25th November.

Have I got this right?

So on the day that Mermaids sum up the court case and the charity commission voice a concern about the court case Jackie Green deleted twitter.

There is a number of possibilities but I also don't believe in coincidences. There were people connected to Mermaids who knew how badly the LGB Alliance case had gone by the day of their summing up...

MrsJamin · 26/11/2022 23:12

Excellent summary of the timeline. It also struck me as odd that that Guardian article Susie commissioned was published while she was on holiday. Also that Jackie deleted Jackie's tweets on that day in court.

Just having a chat with DH over this.

I was talking and he went "hang on a second. She was the CEO AND safeguarding lead? That's really bad practice for a start because it concentrates all the power in an organisation in one person and makes it much harder for them to be challenged if there are any issues."

His point is you need to have a culture where challenging authority within an organisation can be done through multiple channels so there is accountability. If the CEO and safeguarding lead are two different people you always have two routes of accountability. Basic checks and balances principles. If you only have one then you get more of a dictator effect. It makes the whole organisation more vulnerable to safeguarding issues.

Remembering this is children's charity too. Its a structural weakness that the trustees should address going forward.

Susie Green played a huge role in stopping safeguarding over sight at GIDS and in being both CEO and safeguarding lead at Mermaids structurally limited it there too.

Yep, segregation of duties.

It’s a pretty basic control of a company (or should be!)

I dont know for sure. But this looks like it might be... ("this brilliant charity", but no details at all about what they do, start ASAP and hit the ground running...)

Ooh I think it is!! Prepping my cv now. Love the bit about a full DBS being carried out and must have knowledge of charity law. They’re even trolling SG in the job advert 😂😂😂😂

Happylittlechicken · 27/11/2022 06:33

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 26/11/2022 22:14

Available to start within the next month? Surely anyone suitable for that level of responsibility would have a full month's notice at the absolute minimum?

Most people that senior it’s 3 months very minimum, most chief execs that I’ve worked with it’s a year notice.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/11/2022 06:49

In most organisations an ‘interim’ position is filled from within.

the fact they are advertising highlights again that this is very sudden and with no succession planning

Whether it's Mermaids or not, surely a charity's CEO, interim or otherwise, absolutely should have a knowledge of charity law? This advert says it's optional, which would explain a lot about what's gone wrong at Mermaids if it is them.

Knowledge of Charity Law/Education provision would be ideal though not essential

They'll probably be looking for someone who does interim management, there are plenty of people around the sector who do short term assignments, it's not the sort of thing you'd leave a permanent job for (unless something is going really wrong for you).

That's what I was assuming. I know nothing about this sector at all but I used to vaguely know an accountant who seemed to change senior jobs in the NHS very often. Took me ages to grasp that he was a turnaround specialist. Blush

I was under the impression that charity salaries are shamefully low. Would a CEO salary of £60k indicate a larger charity? There are lots of charities based in Leeds but most look to me like small outfits mostly relying on volunteers.

SierraSapphire · 27/11/2022 08:06

Charity salaries are really variable, £60k would be within the realms of possibility for Mermaids. In fact the Charity Commission places the salary exactly in the £60-70k bracket on this page - register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1160575&subid=0

WarriorN · 27/11/2022 08:19

Well, curiouser and curiouser...

SereneSemolina · 27/11/2022 08:24

One would hope that the list of requirements and experience would be rather more extensive to lead a charity and claim 60k salary

To think of the quibbling and judgement over nurses asking for a pay rise and compare their salary to what SG has been being paid from charitable donations and grants is unbelievable.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/11/2022 08:24

Re the deleting of Jackie's tweets - I've never been entirely convinced that Jackie had sole control of their Twitter account. It sounded to me like two voices - you have tweets like:

^Getting lost is the best way to find the most beautiful places! 🚲 #cycling #Italy #bianchi #adventure t.co/OpAy2DkC2I^

^Missing #singing so much! #performing is my #love in life. #butterfly @Mermaids_Gender #accoustic #singer t.co/mxc7YQnEnC^

And then you have tweets like:

@LogicalFallacy6 Agreed. It was mainly doctors who suggested I play with boys toys as they hoped I would 'grow out' of wanting the more girl orientated toys. Alas I didnt grow out of it because I am and always have been a girl.

@VictoriaPeckham I was meant to be female and thus had surgery to correct my small birth defect. For a long time I was told I had to play with action men and other 'boy toys', another concept I find rather silly, but still I wanted the Barbies and little mermaid toy

I'd always assumed that Susie had written the "defensive" tweets, but this is of course pure speculation.

FusilliFettler · 27/11/2022 08:28

Sarah Phillimore seems to think this is the likely explanation.

Change of CEO at mermaids…
ResisterRex · 27/11/2022 08:31

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine I had a thought not a million miles from yours 😔

Datun · 27/11/2022 08:33

If puberty blockers arrest development, and Jackie has written those tweets, they're the the thinking of an adult with the brain of a twelve year old.

Did Jackie ever talk much about things other than performing, bike riding and toys? Or being a 'girl'.

It would be high for a charity based in the north of England but most of them aren't national charities, iyswim. So yeah it's not a like with like comparison.

Unlikely to be a negotiated settlement then, because that takes time for both sides to take legal advice and agree. Plus that LinkedIn screams sacked.

WarriorN · 27/11/2022 08:44

I find that tweet quite odd.

Was J seen at the Tavi?

Prior to Green mermaids was more reasonable and open ended. The child I know who was referred to the Tavi around 2010 had a very tactful suggestion around simply enjoying fashion. Which suited him hugely and he was much happier - he'd been quite happy when younger. It was people telling him he couldn't wear xyz that was the problem

Most drs would be v aware that telling a child to play with boys toys is incredibly sexist and unprofessional

According to SG’s TED talk, the toys issue first came up when Jackie was 2, and Jackie was seen by the Tavi at 7. Jackie was therefore not old enough to remember herself what the doctors were saying and will be reliant on whatever self-serving guff SG has told her.

LaughingPriest · 27/11/2022 08:55

I was meant to be female and thus had surgery to correct my small birth defect.

A belief in a higher power, a God or something who designs intended bodies which still "go wrong"?

I can't get my head around it. How does anyone know what they are supposed to be in life if it's pre-ordained?

Really, why can't they just say "I want to be female" without invoking magic or religion?

FlirtsWithRhinos · 27/11/2022 09:04

Without dismissing the reasons SG was not a good CEO for Mermaids, a lot of people have left Twitter since Musk took over.

JG's departure may be related to problems at Mermaids, or JG getting sick of the heated posts around the LGB court case rather than anything specific coming from the court, or could just be part of the general Twitter exodus.
