Well, here we are...

OP posts:
AuxArmesCitoyens · 27/11/2022 11:57

I'm keeping a foot in both camps, because there are some threads over there that are important to me.

GhostOrchid · 27/11/2022 11:59

Hello! I was a Guardian talk board refugee but washed up somewhere else, and was never really part of your community, but I lurked on several threads including the thread in question, which was always interesting, usually perfectly civil and made me think about lots of things.

I’ve been shocked by the attitudes displayed on the board, really shocked so I just wanted to say solidarity and I wish you well. Not sure I’ll post here much, but we’ll see. Certainly won’t be posting there.

picklemewalnuts · 27/11/2022 12:02

Sinner has accidentally committed the cardinal sin on MN of announcing his presence.

It's a tricky line. I can imagine worrying that I appeared to be going by stealth.

However, truth is no-one cares if you are male. No need to mention it. Grin

I think women experience such a universal issue with being dismissed because of our sex, that people announcing it are demonstrating privilege by not feeling the need to obscure it or indeed by feeling it adds gravitas to their words.

Just be you. It's rarely relevant if you are male or female.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/11/2022 12:02

It really is all about heat rather than light from most posters over there isn't it? Not the genuinely bewildered and upset, of course, but the pilers-on. And gosh some of them hate and fear women.

I was interested but not surprised that one of the most considered contributions was from peacalmer, who was also one of the few who went into the original thread and challenged it but also listened.

Guess what, he said the posters on the thread of evil didn't do all the awful things we were accused of.

I was glad that he said that his trans daughter is doing well, and really sad that she has still encountered some seriously inappropriate suggestions from people around her.

It will take me a while to find my feet here - I don't immediately see threads that mesh with my interests, but I'll give it some time - I have also made an attempt to sign up to the far-fabled 'other place' - that is currently pending staff approval, so we'll see.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/11/2022 12:05

It asked me to prove I was human. Bit of a challenge that one.

TricyrtisJTT · 27/11/2022 11:56

theperfumes, these new men who've joined from the other place are not here to 'educate us little womens', they are good people and entirely on the side of women. Maybe give them a chance before you start dissing them, eh?

Joining in the welcome to you all.

Advanced search is a useful tool on here TricyrtisJTT. The board attracts a number of "community disrupters" and a search by username often demonstrates that someone posting derailing / hostile posts is new and likely posting just to be unpleasant.

There are a small number of men who post regularly on here with no issues.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/11/2022 12:14

There are funny and fast moving Archers threads in the radio section that I think you'll like Elderberry.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/11/2022 12:15

Thanks Gin, I'll have a look.

SinnerBoy · 27/11/2022 12:16

Sorry, that's absolutely not my intention and I didn't mean to give the impression that I'm here to educate anyone. I just want to talk and learn.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/11/2022 12:20

Stay sinner! It is helpful to have male allies and you habe shown you are prepared to listen and be humble.

I wonder if Frankie will join us. His contributions were always interesting.

TricyrtisJTT · 27/11/2022 12:25

Thanks for the advice, MrsOverton. I've actually been a member here for a while now, but it's good to share instructions and concerns so we all know what the score is.

As for the men from the other place, they're good uns and on our side.

Plasticfreefantastic · 27/11/2022 12:25

Style and Beauty has some great threads for any former Sparkly people. Education is a very mixed bag - an awful lot about one specific sector - but well worth a look through. The SEN boards have some very knowledgeable and supportive people on them. Property and DIY can be great. Chat includes all sorts of random conversations. The TV and Film sections has some long-running threads and interesting info. Have a look at Classics for some entertainment.

I think the general dismissive attitude towards MN on the other board has always always underestimated the content on here. I’ve been posting on here for a decade, and have found it far more interesting for a long time. It is DEFINITELY less of an echo chamber, which I personally have found invaluable (if annoying at times!), the personal relationships are far less and it is nowhere near as quirky, but there are big positives. There are always threads about how it’s not as good as it used to be, and the growth in poster numbers has definitely made it less personal. You’ll see upthread someone referred to Mouldies - very much the Genoa/hidden thread of MN! But I still find funny, helpful and interesting posters.

ExiledElsie · 27/11/2022 12:27

You will find quite a different tone on this place, sinner, some bits are very supportive and others give very short shrift.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 27/11/2022 12:28

Me too. I do like the broader mix on MN, from the women on the Relationships board who really opened my eyes to emotional abuse, and others who opened my eyes to the reality of poverty, to the ones on the education boards trying to decide between Elton and Harrow, who just opened my eyes wide.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 27/11/2022 12:29

Eton.

Plasticfreefantastic · 27/11/2022 12:30

@PoppySeedBagelRedux I like nothing better than a good old discussion about Common Entrance pass marks. Although DH was slightly surprised when I announced, after a year 9 CAT test on one of ours, ‘that’s not enough for Harrow but would probably be fine for Oundle’.

EileenBilton · 27/11/2022 12:32

Hello lifeboaters. I regularly lurked on the Other Place and I mostly lurk here on MN too. It's very clear to me that the ousting has happened now rather than, say, 18 months ago because the bandwagon is shaking itself to pieces rather rapidly now. The self-styled Good People know they got it wrong, and don't like the feeling at all.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 27/11/2022 12:35

Heh! I do miss the Boggle Drool & Sneer property thread ( the only one I do miss, to my surprise). Is there such a thread here or is it just occasionally someone posts a link to a boggle etc-worthy house in its own thread?

Plasticfreefantastic · 27/11/2022 12:37

Individual property boggle threads. Although long ones can lead to other examples being posted.

Of course here you get people posting links to their OWN HOUSES (still struggling with this one) allowing people to criticise their toaster and garden decorations to their ‘face’. I love those.

BettyFilous · 27/11/2022 12:39

Not as far as I’m aware, but we are crying out for one. There are regular individual threads linking to Rightmove property porn or 70s decor howlers. Nothing to stop you from starting one. It would be well-visited.

-Stay sinner! It is helpful to have male allies and you habe shown you are prepared to listen and be humble.-

I'm going to stay, but I don't want to wind people up on my first day, or to give the impression that I'm here to lecture and save the day!

StellaAndCrow · 27/11/2022 12:51

Hi new guys and gals. It's fab to have a whole bunch of new people. Sorry though that you've had a bad time, sounds like a traumatic split with your old home.

Stay, have fun,, relax, look around.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 27/11/2022 12:53

I agree about Peacalmer's contribution on the booting out thread. Always a very considered poster, and one I will miss.

I've not fully left the old place but I doubt I'll still be there this time next week.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 27/11/2022 12:53

Does anyone else get loads of extra line breaks adding themselves while writing a post?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 27/11/2022 12:54

Makes it impossible to do more than a couple of sentences at a time.
