Scottish Government don't allow suffragette colours at Stage 2 GRA meeting

The Committee are currently meeting at the Scottish Parliament today to discuss the suggested amendments to the GRA (Stage 2.) A feminist has been told to remove her scarf (knitted in stripes of suffragette colours - no other slogans, badges etc) or leave. She chose to leave. Meanwhile rainbow lanyards are being worn by Committee members who are discussing the amendments.

It's easy to make fun of this because it's so fucking stupid.

But there is a serious side which is the ease at which the Scottish Parliament will exclude women from the political process. It is shocking.

From the Wikipedia article about Bedford College, London:

Bedford College was founded in London in 1849 as the first higher education college for women in the United Kingdom. In 1900, it became a constituent of the University of London.
...
The college colours were green and grey, said to be those of Minerva. Purple was added in 1938 to represent the university; the resulting colours were, by chance or design, similar to those of women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.

My late mother was the first in her family to go to University. But I would have been expelled today if I'd turned up wearing her college scarf?

At least the Scottish Government are now being completely out in the open about their opposition to women having rights I guess

do you think they’ve figured out quite how appalling the optics are yet?

Half the electorate are women. Bye bye Independence.

ResisterRex · 15/11/2022 15:56

In the Telegraph too:

Ends:

The Scottish Parliament has been approached for comment.

100%. I used to be proud to be Scottish. The reaction to the 'six words' amendment was the thing which utterly broke that. I watched in shock and horror while many of the elected representatives of my country argued against rape survivors merely being allowed to request a female examiner. Because of their their adherence to an ideology which despises women and girls.

The 'consultations' regarding the GRA reforms carried out (and results ignored) have been laughable. Women's groups ignored while the SG roll out the carpet for trans lobby groups. Women told that their evidence is not worthy because It's 'anecdotal'. Women told that our concerns 'are not valid'. The Cass report ignored as not being relevant to Scotland.

And now women thrown out of their own Parliament for just utter nonsence. The whole thing is absurd. But women across Scotland are fucking furious and we won't fucking wheesht.

Politicians wouldn't be allowed to go to meetings with football colours either.

It's just standard dress code.

Not bothered to read the thread? Or the code of conduct for visitors? Or the apology from the Presiding Officer?

Likening the suffragette colours to football colours is such a crude and desperate reach that I can hardly even muster any irritation.

I mean, listen to yourself ffs

Ramblingnamechanger · 15/11/2022 16:11

Like the one that was in evidence at the remembrance parade on Sunday, Margarita?

Oh ok, let's just imagine for a mo that the SP apologised for this ejection, would the Presiding Officer say something like 'The action taken was an error and I would like to apologise on behalf of the parliament' maybe?

So why were members of the committee allowed to wear pride lanyards? Surely of suffragette colours were banned, so would pride colours be?

Somanysocks · 15/11/2022 16:27

Well well Marge, there you go again 🙄

Are rainbow lanyards part of a standard dress code.

I love the way you bounce in with your incorrect justification after the Presiding Officer had had to publicly apologise.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/11/2022 16:52

it's good that the 'error' was acknowledged but it would also be good to know who made the decision in the first place.

I think it demonstrates that - in certain cricles - accusations of 'transphobia' are acted upon swiftly before anyone engages their brain.

Waitwhat23 · 15/11/2022 16:57

It's worth highlighting this - SNP and Greens voted against amendments which concern sex offenders -

Against putting in restrictions to stop sex offenders from abusing the GRC process. For fuck's sake.

Da da dahhh! pie enters the thread with the usual lack of reading the thread and usual prejudices against women who would disagree with them.

Sorry, but I thought that deserved to be reposted in bold. I'd put it in big fuck off letters if I knew how.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 15/11/2022 17:23

Well it's nice of them to apologise for the stripy scarf incident but they really need to apologise for voting down the amendments.

It should be on billboards. The Tories wont have to work at all come the election, it's all there ready for them.

www.theguardian.com/society/2022/nov/15/woman-wearing-suffragette-coloured-scarf-removed-from-holyrood-debate

'The presiding officer of the Scottish parliament has been forced to clarify that suffragette colours “are not, and never have been” banned on the Holyrood estate after a woman wearing a purple, green and white scarf was removed from a meeting of the equalities committee.'
