I love how they've drawn a circle round him in the picture to highlight who it is...... as if we can't already tell!

Beauty pageants are shit but there was scholarship money in this for the winner. And I doubt a plus size woman would have won it. But an overweight transwoman is fiiiiiiine.

All of this.

RayonSunrise · 11/11/2022 15:54

Meh, it's a "femininity contest," which over the past few decades has turned into a plastic surgery fest even for natal females. I can see the double standards, but I really have much bigger fish to fry on this topic.

I am amazed at the hypocrisy shown, any other woman's event won by a man and there would be outrage, but because it's a beauty pageant the outrage is much less.

Not really a consistent view on being opposed to men competing in women's events.

This. You can't say women have a right to female only competitions and spaces, but only if they are competitions and spaces you personally approve of.

A young woman missed out on a scholarship ( this is a huge deal in America, that is huge opportunity and huge sum of money a young woman has had stolen from her by a man in this blatantly biased judging panel). And we all know the winner was held to a much lower bar to win, than the women were. No women would have won looking like the winner did, we all know this.

Its as much as a rigged competition against the women as Lia Thomas against the women swimmers. Its just as much a humiliation and insult to the female competitors.

It's almost like feminists don't like objectification and sexism where ever it is.

Unfortunately these events carry money/scholarships/work and women miss out. So for that I agree. It would be interesting to go back and look at the BMIs of all the prior winners. And compare to this year's. Just for fun.

IneedanewTV · 11/11/2022 16:02

It’s about winning a scholarship. So a man took a scholarship that was originally set up for women for whatever reason. Doesn’t matter the reasons. But a man won.

Gingernaut · 11/11/2022 16:02

The prize was a scholarship with cash

America is weird and people do all sorts of things for any kind of advancement - this has taken a worthwhile prize away from a woman. Again.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 11/11/2022 16:02

I can't stop laughing at this. I probably should. It's not cool that he took the scholarship money. But every time I look at the photo I start laughing again. Could it be any more staggeringly obvious that no one thinks this person is actually a woman? Especially not the judges of this pageant!

And yes, I do value beauty pageants less than sports competitions, how is that hypocritical?

IneedanewTV · 11/11/2022 16:03

Remember in the states, higher education is not free. Loans are very expensive. This is a huge deal. A female missed out.

Because your objection should not be based on how much you agree with a competition. That is not the argument. The argument is that men cannot become women. They cannot ' woman' better than women can.

Could it be any more staggeringly obvious that no one thinks this person is actually a woman? Especially not the judges of this pageant! Well yes, that person won, looking like that, was actually an admission from the judges that they know that person is not a woman. They would not have won looking like that if the Judges had believed them to be a woman.

bellinisurge · 11/11/2022 16:06

I'm a slightly overweight woman in my fifties. I done many heroic things in my life including giving birth. If I identified as a 21 year old woman why couldn't I enter and win the contest? And get a few thousand dollars in prize money to use for study?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2022 16:12

But if a competition is inherently sexist and you believe it's demeaning, and you'd like to see it die a death, wouldn't you care less than if it was something which lifted WAGs up?

I mean over the years things like wet t-shirt competitions, Butlins used to have nice leg contests, children's pagents, things like that. They shouldn't die because fugly men enter and win. But I can see women thinking that another nail in their coffin isn't a bad thing.

He identifies as beautiful duh

roarfeckingroarr · 11/11/2022 16:35

It's a problem because the winner gets a scholarship to college (US). So whatever you think of beauty pageants, it's a man taking an opportunity designed to promote women's education away from a woman.

Tinner01 · 11/11/2022 16:35

So women have to starve themselves and undergo plastic surgery to win these vile pageants but males can win just because?
hmm

DadOfTheMoment · 11/11/2022 16:39

Lunacy.

LostMyUserName · 11/11/2022 16:46

I’m wondering what would have happened if there were two TW in the competition.

RFPO77 · 11/11/2022 16:53

It reminds me of those 'spot the odd one out ' exercises from school. I can guarantee if Nguyen was a natal woman there's no way they'd have won. Obviously it's next to impossible to spot the transgender woman unless you really try because no difference right 🙄

Brian, what a babe s(he) is, totally passing for a woman. 🤪

They would share first, obviously, as transwomen do woman better than women do.

Jaxhog · 11/11/2022 16:58

I'm not a big beauty pageant fan because of the stereotyping involved. However, this is just so insulting. I know several transwomen who, while male, could reach the required standard. This offends just about everyone.

And are known for sharing and caring.

LondonWolf · 11/11/2022 17:00

That it's a beauty pageant is irrelevant. It's another man taking a woman's place. A big part of the problem is this idea that "well if it's something I don't approve of then no worries". Don't people who say this understand that it doesn't stop there at the thing you're fine with being removed from women? It keeps going and going till it gets to all the things you do think should be kept for women - rape & DV shelters, all women medical wards, your daughters sports teams, medals in women's sports events, & women's prisons for example. So shortsighted!

eurochick · 11/11/2022 17:01

I love how in one of the photos in the linked story someone has helpfully circled Brian. Presumably in case anyone was having trouble identifying them in the picture.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/11/2022 17:04

I don't like the concept of beauty pageants either but I do have a problem with this as it's yet another crass example of men inveigling their way into women's activities.

Many women might not feel that anything has been lost - and perhaps it hasn't been - but, this was not something that a biological male should have had any business being part of. That's the issue for me.
