Gender affirming haircuts

It's Trans Awareness Week and I've just received a work email advertising these for free. 🙄

I could do with a haircut - do you think I could go and say that I identify as a woman and need my femenine gender affirmed?

My work is doing a gender affirming clothes swap. I think my jeans are probably non binary but I do have a jumper that may well be cat-gender

Do you mean you get to swap clothes with Barry from accounts for the day? Ewww

Magentax · 02/11/2022 08:10

Did no-one ever tell them, as small children, that girls and women can in fact have short hair, and men and boys long hair?

I completely agree but lots of people on mumsnet need to be told this. We had a big thread where lots of people were upset that a “man” (actually a very attractive woman with a short hair cut) was modelling a dress. The thread was deleted.

how is non-binary female or non-binary male a thing?

Did you not see the thread about the Boston marathon ? 😂

I missed that thread - that's classic!

Very puzzled by this whole thing. I’ve had all haircuts from a shaved head to waist length tresses and everything in between. I have always been female though. I thought the whole point of feminism was that it’s sexist to tell us that certain clothes and hairstyles and jobs and hobbies are “female” and we can be whoever we want to be? 🤷‍♀️

Chersfrozenface · 02/11/2022 09:25

At 21 my husband and I both had long hair. As we've got older our hair has got thinner and been cut shorter.

Same is true of my brother.

My son has longer hair than my daughter.

I can assure you we're a very normal family.

MagpiePi · 02/11/2022 09:41

Is a gender affirming haircut the same as a normal haircut but the person doing the cutting whispers 'you are a man/woman/non-binary' while they're working?

MagpiePi · 02/11/2022 09:45

@IamAporcupine

another classic!

😁

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/11/2022 09:46

A salon near me offers non gender cuts, with long and short options. My hair is above jawline and I see no reason why I shouldn’t ask for a short non gender cut and finish instead of a ladies’ cut, seeing as the styles would be identical. I could save £13.

This, and also: is gender affirming haircut only when you 'identify as the opposite gender' (or as NB)?

Or can I, as a woman who 'identifies as a woman' (*), request one to affirm my gender too?

(*) I don't.

Tell them you identify as someone with fabulously expensive, beautifully coloured and styled hair, and that you'd like to book your free appointment now please. See how they like them gender-affirming apples, wanksticks.

Sorry, I am not sure I understand.

Sorry it was late! I was suggested you have earned yourself a badge of honour for getting your first deletion. Like when you get a suspension on Facebook or Twitter!

I tried to educate myself with this:
www.seventeen.com/beauty/hair/g40314165/gender-neutral-haircuts/

It seems any hair is gender neutral hair.

IamAporcupine · 02/11/2022 10:28

Surely this falls foul of discrimination law straight away?

TeenDivided · 01/11/2022 17:58

They'd be better off saying

Simple clipper cut - nothing fancy £X
Short cut with additional styling £
Trim any length £
etc

Remove any talk of gender from the price list at all.

(So we have Trans awareness week, LBGT month, Trans day of remembrance. When is GC day?)

Or boringly normal hetero day?

This is a page of normal haircuts that have been around for decades. They’re trying so hard!

Yes, you’d think so. There’s already a controversy over salons charging differently for mens’ and womens’ hair but this is usually based on different hairstyles and more time consuming traditional womens’ styles costing more. In this case they’re charging more for exactly the same style based on the customer’s sex/proclaimed gender identity .

How long before we start seeing legal challenges then?

Its an open goal waiting to happen.

Ivyonafence · 02/11/2022 10:57

Jesus, it's their business and time. They can do it if they want.

It's nothing to do with you. It's not a 'womens space' or anything to do with womens rights.

This cause get more ridiculous by the day.

EBearhug · 02/11/2022 11:03

My hair is long mostly because I can't be arsed with going to the salon every 6 weeks or so, and i just get the ends trimmed once in a while. It is no different in style from male colleagues who have long hair. I have deep hair envy of one man's long hair, which is in fab condition.

I've had it cut in a barber's before. (Couldn't get an appointment in my usual place.) The only difference was I had my hair washed leaning forward rather than back.

Charging by complexity of cut makes much more sense than whether the person under the hair is male or female or any sort of identity.

You may see it that way.

I actually think that anything that buys into this nonsensical ideology affects women's spaces and rights.

WTF is a 'gender affirming haircut'? Seriously, what is it?

Since when have we only been able to discuss issues that impact directly on women's spaces or rights? This is relevant because it highlights the contortions necessary to prop up this ridiculous ideology. It also illustrates how it is generally women who get screwed by these contortions... I wonder how many men identify as non- binary in order to be allowed to pay more for their haircut? I wonder how many of the non binary women think they got a good deal, when they are still paying more than men?

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen, it's literally a series of haircuts, several of which I have had at some time in my life as a WOMAN. I'm actually laughing at my desk reading this 😂
