Some light relief in sport

The Boston Marathon has added a new non-binary category for runners. Great, right?

Except this is the comment from one parent of a runner who identifies as non-binary.

Ok....this will likely start a bunch of hateful comments but here goes: As the parent of a non-binary runner, I applaud the effort for inclusion. However, perhaps a more level playing field, specifically in sports, would be non-binary AMAB and non-binary AFAB. Just my 2 cents.

So the parent realises that non-binary females are disadvantaged by being placed in the same category as non-binary males, and wants it separated by... sex.

That is classic. But if they’re non binary, surely they realised this us what would happen? 😂😂😂😂😂

waterwitch · 31/10/2022 21:26

Or they could just run in the boring old sex-based categories. This is classic, thanks for sharing!

Datun · 31/10/2022 22:15

Why aren't the authorities looking at this and thinking it's unhinged?

'Don't identify as male or female' is nonsense.

zanahoria · 31/10/2022 22:17

So non binaries are to be split into two binary categories?

Taswama · 31/10/2022 22:18

Brilliant!

LaughingPriest · 31/10/2022 22:20

Amazing

EwwSprouts · 31/10/2022 22:24

So NB should have sub categories based on sex? Got it.

Asdavaluesausage · 31/10/2022 22:29

im Still giggling about this 😂😂😂

Cattytabby · 31/10/2022 22:33

Thanks, op. I needed that 🤣

ZestFest · 31/10/2022 23:02

HAHA! The perfect circle! 😂

Wellies54 · 31/10/2022 23:10

So by this logic, all women athletes should identify as non-binary AFAB so they can have their own sex based category while the men can choose from men's, women's and non-binary AMAB.

AuntieDickhead · 31/10/2022 23:15

zanahoria · 31/10/2022 22:17

So non binaries are to be split into two binary categories?

Grin
RFPO77 · 31/10/2022 23:22

Oh my this is a marvelous idea. Why did nobody think to do this before, we must!

ReunitedThorns · 31/10/2022 23:31

TBF I do ask if non-binary individuals are either non-binary female or non-binary male.

GwenniMcKinney · 01/11/2022 00:00

So fairness in sport does matter or maybe the non binary AFAB should just try harder to run faster !

ZeldaFighter · 01/11/2022 00:09

Can't not comment but actually have no words. Do you think the parent understands that they've just dismissed "trans ideology?

Rainbowshit · 01/11/2022 00:13

Ha ha. No getting away from that binary!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/11/2022 00:17

So... presumably their kid has rejected binary gender stereotypes -great! ... but obviously sex is real and matters... if only there were other people who shared those views..
Oi! Boston Marathon parent, we're over here, welcome!

So non binaries are to be split into two binary categories?

This seems to be the sporting version of the NB t-shirt that comes in male & female options.

😂

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/11/2022 00:22

At some point, someone should notice that treating male non-binaries and female non-binaries the same always seems to result in male bodies and male health needs being treated as default, and female specific needs being ignored. Someone should notice that this creates systematic, institutional discrimination, like females being driven out of sport. Perhaps someone could create a political movement to address female people being excluded. What would they call it?

Anyway, over to Chicago. @Datun may particularly (dis)like this one. I recommend you all click through on the link. It's the local paper, and there are pictures of the people complaining.

The Chicago Marathon has also introduced a new non-binary category, and people aren't happy.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is one of the most prestigious races, drawing runners from around the globe. So when Cal Calamia heard that the race on Sunday had opened a nonbinary runner category for first time ever, they were ecstatic.

“It’s really exciting. It feels really good to choose nonbinary in my hometown race,” said Calamia, who does not identify as either male or female and uses the pronoun they.

But Calamia grew concerned when they realized there was no “elite” nonbinary division, as in the male and female races, or any finish line ribbon or monetary prize. Calamia then noticed there had been no public announcement to promote the division. [bold mine]

“Personally, it feels hurtful [bold mine] because it feels performative, or brushed under the rug, because it really is a big deal,” said Calamia, a teacher in San Francisco who grew up in Grayslake.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is the second major marathon in the country to open a division for nonbinary runners, following the New York City Marathon last year. Two other World Major Marathons, London and Boston, will host nonbinary divisions in their 2023 races.

The move to include nonbinary race divisions has been hailed as major progress by LGBTQ activists who have been pushing for races to be more inclusive. But some worry the changes are only superficial, made without public announcements that would welcome nonbinary runners. The Chicago marathon opened its first-ever nonbinary division without any statement to the media or public.
