You are supposed to be a bastion of scientific rigour!

WTF!!

Igneococcus · 17/10/2022 21:38

Some people's cycles are so long they never in fact experience a period at all no matter how long they live for. That's true for about 50 % of people in all ethnicities.

Amarette · 17/10/2022 21:40

Also...self-identify as Asian?!

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 17/10/2022 21:41

So if I self identify as Asian my cycle will get longer. Really???

ReedRite · 17/10/2022 21:48

Amazing.

This is music to my ears, I’ve been worried about my cycle length shortening and concerned I might be in perimenopause.

But If I decide my personal history no longer involves me being born white in Essex, I can self-identify my way out of that?

Cool beans. So I’ll no longer be white, I’ll choose to be Asian instead and get my longer cycle back.

I thought I’d have to either accept it or fuck about with HRT, but turns out I can decide I actually come from Rangoon and it’ll all be back to normal. It’s like all my birthdays and Christmases coming at once.

Igmum · 17/10/2022 21:50

I am torn between mentally hitting my head repeatedly on a desk and planning some experiments in which people randomly self identify as various different ethnicities and we measure when/if their menstrual cycle is affected/exists at all. I think I prefer old science thank you

LaughingPriest · 17/10/2022 22:15

I know I always go against the grain here but I think 'people who menstruate' is perfectly clear - it's not all women, it's specifically taking data from those who regularly menstruate. If they said 'women's cycles' then I'd question whether menopausal ones etc were skewing the data.

I don't have a problem with trans men not wanting to be called women so it avoids that while not making the stupid mistakes made by other outlets who forget that 'most people' don't menstruate...

Self-identifying your ethnicity is far less problematic than your sex - sex is binary, ethnicity is clearly a spectrum that you can't very well measure by any other means than self-reporting.

Medoca · 17/10/2022 22:17

Scientifically I can’t see a problem with this? People menstruate don’t they?

Medoca · 17/10/2022 22:18

Sorry that got cut off, people who are doing a survey without another person recoding them have to ‘self identify’. It’s being factual.

Medoca · 17/10/2022 22:19

recording them.

Good to know if one of us women need to delay our period for an important event and can’t get a doctor’s appointment for hormones to sort it. Claim an Asian identity and job done! (Seriously, what a pile of horseshit this mangling of language has led us to.)

Newcatbrowntail · 17/10/2022 22:38

All this mangling of language to satisfy trans ideology is working just fine.

CandyLeBonBon · 17/10/2022 22:40

If I self identify as Asian, will my body type and shape also accommodate my new identity? Because I've been trying to find a way of getting rid of my pesky wide European hips so this would be quite handy!

cofeetablebook · 17/10/2022 22:21

No I'm not.

Everyone who reads that automatically converts people to women in their minds but it can't be said in print. Some wouldn't say it out loud. Woman isn't a dirty word.

It's coercive.

That study has allowed for the fact that there may be differences, on average, between ethnicities which is based in their dna / biology. We are allowed to discuss that.

But disallows the word woman or female. Which are biological/ anatomical/ scientific terms.

OP posts:
CandyLeBonBon · 17/10/2022 22:43

And if they wish to include transmen and nonbinary peeps, which is presumably the point of saying 'people who menstruate', then why are they using imagery that is clearly and obviously coded towards feminine-presenting women?

cofeetablebook · 17/10/2022 22:45

I disagree. There aren't boogeymen around every corner.

bobbinon · 17/10/2022 22:46

Exactly.

I mean, Ffs, were they channelling Oli London?

When I subscribed a few years ago I got sent a NS book all about science which had a ridiculous double page spread of some imaginary map of "gender." "Sea of transsexual, non binary island" etc.

Total BS.

OP posts:
ScaryFaces · 17/10/2022 22:46

All self-identify means in this context is the way they determined who was Asian is they asked people what their ethnicity was. That's fine.

Also women are, scientifically, people.

bobbinon · 17/10/2022 22:48

They are but so are men.

I wasn't actually so bothered by the self id as Asian, as I can see that being nec in a scientific study,

"Self id" as female is completely unscientific. You are or you're not.

And if you're not you're not included in the study,

No, women menstruate, people includes men, who don't.

bobbinon · 17/10/2022 22:51

I've had GI idealogues telling me in BF peer support groups that the word breast is gendered and distressing hence we use chest feeding for non binary and trans men.

So what happens when they get a milk bleb? Is mastitis a gendered word?

By that "logic" menstruation is a gendered word. That's allowed. But not woman?
