Long twitter thread here. She's had her electronic devices seized too, and has been accused of being certain posters on Kiwi Farms and Mumsnet

@BernardBlacksWineIceLolly and @BreakWindandFire sorry to tag you but she's been accused of being you!

We all know who this will be, but as Caroline says, please don't speculate/discuss them.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha.... Sorry... hahaha, just let me pull myself togeth..... hahahahahahahahahah hahahahahahahahah 'er and I'll type a response. Hahahahahahahaha. Nope, I can't do it. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Seriously. Wiki-fucking-pedia????????? And you think anyone with a modicum of a clue about anything should take anything you say as worthy of merit? Come the fuck on.

This ^

Anyone using wikipedia as a reference in a discussion about internet culture immediately outs themselves as not knowing a thing about it

On the off chance that ScaryFaces is naive rather than disingenuous, here’s the backstory: unherd.com/thepost/wikipedia-co-founder-i-no-longer-trust-the-website-i-created/

Sorry to say I don't buy the Saint Farrow stuff; I can't put my finger on why precisely, but she makes me deeply uncomfortable and I don't trust her. Whilst I'm not doubting she has suffered some harassment, unfortunately I cannot shake the feeling that there is something else going on with her.

No doubt I'll be roundly criticised, which is understandable - I'm presenting no evidence other than a hunch - but I wanted to put down a small marker that not everyone here thinks she's an asset in our fight to protect women's sex based rights and children from unnecessary medicalisation.

AlisonDonut · 04/10/2022 22:04

wikipedia!

Prepostrous tales that even the inventor of wiki says is prepostrous...

Knittingmonster · 04/10/2022 22:07

“You don’t have to look further than Wikipedia”. Well no, you don’t, if you want to come across as an idiot who believes anything. If Wikipedia told you all dogs were aliens and were trying to conquer the world, would you believe it @ScaryFaces? I mean, if Wikipedia says it it just be true right?

fuck me, miss the point much?

no-one thinks she's a saint. people just think that if you're OK with the police coming into the house of people you disagree with, confiscating their property and arresting them, you'd better be OK with them doing it to you one day

TheClogLady · 04/10/2022 22:16

here you go @ScaryFaces - it’s very unlikely you can tell us anything about KF that we haven’t already heard (and dismantled) in one thousand, three hundred and twenty eight (1328) posts.

feel free to post anymore carping re the Farms over in the second volume of KF thread and cease making this one all untidy.

Dahlia you think people are rejecting the harrassment of Farrow, because she is an ‚asset‘?

It is much simpler than that. People here reject it because it is wrong and because they could be next. As could any outspoken woman.

Wikipedia can be an excellent resource, so long as in using it you are aware of its limitations. I've used it for work to access highly technical information and it has been great.

However, as soon as you head into contentious areas, particularly having a political dimension, it can be worse than useless. Those contentious issues that trans activists are engaged in are often filled with misinformation with some of the assertions that can be found seemingly over the line in being libellous.

May I politely agree to disagree? If any of my HE students cited Wikipedia they got an instant fail as it demonstrates a lack of ability/motivation to actually do research.

nauticant · 04/10/2022 22:24

It depends how you use it. One safe way to use Wikipedia is you go looking for information, you're pointed to Wikipedia, you get a grasp of their version, and then use that to dig deeper in reliable sources. Sometimes it can be used as a stepping stone.

DahliaBlooming · 04/10/2022 22:25

@BernardBlacksWineIcelolly Yeah, fair point... This probably wasn't the best thread to finally pipe up my mistrust of Farrow. I'm massively concerned about police overreach and our loss of basic civil liberties - it's horrific the women (& men) who have been been targeted by the police for wrong think. But anything Caroline comes out with, I can't help thinking 'ok, but what really happened?'

Personally I think Farrow works directly against many of the tenets of feminism I hold most dear. Doesn't stop me thinking she's been treated appallingly here and that she has the right to her views without being criminalised for wrong think.

deepwatersolo · 04/10/2022 22:32

Obviously you can‘t cite Wikipedia, as it is not an original source, nor a peer reviewed review. In science, depending on the subject, it can sometimes give you an overview, but you still have to go into the original literature cited and take it from there.
Regarding stuff that relates to politics in the broadest sense, including media and public figures, I wouldn’t trust it one bit. There are true editing-battles over who controls the narrative. Worthless.

DahliaBlooming · 04/10/2022 22:33

@deepwatersolo No I don't think people are supporting Caroline because she's an 'asset'; I think it's because people believe what she says. And I just wanted to record that some of us, no doubt a small minority, don't believe she is always completely truthful and so are uncomfortable with her being held up as an important campaigner and perpetual victim.

Dreikanter · 04/10/2022 22:43

Knittingmonster · 04/10/2022 21:34

So how do all these people who hate KF know exactly how it works and what is on there? 🤔🤔🤔. They seem very knowledgeable. And very determined that we don’t go and look there. I do wonder why that is?

Funny isn’t it?

Almost like there’s things on there that some people don’t want to be seen.

HilarysMantelpiece · 04/10/2022 22:44

But, DahliaBlooming Caroline can be completely untruthful, and make you deeply uncomfortable..... and it is still wrong that the police take her into custody on the basis of a complaint about hurty feelings.
That is the point.

This is a freedom of speech issue, and it is very very deeply concerning that Surrey Police have allowed themselves to be used in this way.

It wedges open the door for all sorts of other abuses of power.

I'm a bloody expert on mal comms - as in I regularly close those jobs down because the offence is not made out .

Someone explain to me please what's happened- factually .

AIUI

Posts on KiwiFarms and MN, purported to be made by Caroline, were showed to her, these were posts about the complainant. There is no evidence AFAIK that these posts were by her (she has posted on KF but under her own name) and she has evidence that she was playing the organ in church when some (one?) of the posts was made.

AFAIK there is no suggestion of any direct communication between her and the complainant

IcakethereforeIam · 04/10/2022 22:55

@stillvicarinatutu when I looked, a few hours ago, the was something on Glinner's substack about this, including some info. we can't post on here.

According to Caroline's tweets, Bernard herself was the subject of one of the screenshots which came to the attention of the police (presumably reported by the complainant) who thought it was Caroline's, knowing Bernard for years here I expect the screenshotted comment took no prisoners and was pithy and funny, but I can't imagine it was anything particularly remarkable or heinous. Especially as Bernard is well aware of the MN talk guidelines which have been in place since 2018 and we all must dance around. That worries me.

Yup, you certainly need to take a good look at how reliable the sources being cited are and whether they actually support the claim that they are being used for. But usually a reasonable starting place for gathering information provided that you keep your eyes open and appreciate the limitations; which pretty much goes for any source whether online or not.

I do love it when kiwi farms viewers come and tell silly women not to read kiwi farms.

It's my favourite part of the day...not gonna lie but it pretty much happens

Where has anyone done that?!

This is about police over reach, nothing more. And this time it happens to be Caroline that is the target. We've had threads about other people when the same thing has happened to them.

Whether you like Caroline, agree with her, whatever else, or not is completely irrelevant to this thread and I wish you'd all pack it in, frankly. It's got nothing to do with what she's been accused of.

There is ample proof of kiwi farm's association with bullying vulnerable people to suicide (something it openly celebrates as its raison d'etre and at one point had a counter on its front page celebrating the number of suicides attributed to it), and its association with the christchurch mosque shooter, and its recent involvement in swatting incidents (for anyone who doesn't know "swatting" is where someone makes a fraudulent call to the police claiming there's an active shooter at an address they've doxxed in the hopes the police will overreact and shoot someone). There is no innocent reason to be posting on a site like that, it's one of the most vile places on the internet and Farrow will not be the only kiwifarms user under police investigation.

Proof or it didn't fucking happen

FemaleAndLearning · 04/10/2022 23:11

I find this scary, but like many women it is not going to stop me speaking out. I am upset for Caroline and I'm upset for all of us trying to speak truth and reality. We are women, we grow, we learn. Im looking forward to the web chat about our rights when the police turn up, thank you Arabella for organising. Also because I don't like being told what to I might pop over to the fruit place to see what all the fuss is about.
