“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

Ha ha ha ha ha

<thinks about what Mermaids wants to do to children>

<shudder>

Harry was also among this welcoming reception in 2017:

Interesting it's under the guise of mental health. So that's what Susie Green accepted the invitation under, and didn't correct saying 'actually I'm not an expert in mental health'.

Mermaids were proudly championing and promoting themselves as authorities on mental health...

Penis News has uploaded a piece today called 'What is chest binding and how does it help LGBTQ+ people feel trans joy?'

I'm going to do a PN bingo next for how many times it mentions 'right wing' and 'raging'.

Apparently, in its headline s couple of day ago, JKR was raging, as is the press. Beats 'hysterical' I suppose.

ImherewithBoudica · 30/09/2022 09:57

Presumably to be followed tomorrow by a bit on the delights of breast ironing and on Sunday, yay footbinding, the joy of tiny pretty shoes.

Reality denial on crack.

WolverineBluey · 30/09/2022 09:59

Sorry if this has been posted already. It's currently one of the top stories on the Guardian. It just uses agency copy but very surprising factual and unbiased angle from them.

Fenlandia · 30/09/2022 10:04

"Chest binding is opposed by some groups over fears it causes breathing difficulties, back pain and broken ribs"

I thought there was proper qualitative and quantitative research showing a huge percentage of users reporting negative side effects? So not 'fears' but rather, horror at what they've read in the literature.

TheClogLady · 30/09/2022 10:04

Guardian article up.

weird stock photo choice and it’s credited to ‘agencies’ so I’m guessing the Guardian is still a hostile place to work for anyone vaguely GC!

Surely “trans joy” = misery [that identifies as joy/delight]?

So PN is promoting a source of misery 🤔🤷‍♀️

FrancescaContini · 30/09/2022 10:09

Why is the Guardian using a photo of a very trim midriff plus sportswear for an article on BREAST binding?

"No, trans youth charity Mermaids is STILL not being investigated by the Charity Commission"

An investigation is to find evidence of wrong-doing.

A a “regulatory compliance case” is clearly about wrong-doing, but it would appear that they don't need to investigate because they have all the damning evidence already! Great news!

MalagaNights · 30/09/2022 10:09

Does anyone know whether this investigation means schools and LAs who currently refer parents to Mermaids (which is most of them) should stop until the investigation is completed?

I'm eagerly waiting for the point when we can say: no do not refer to Mermaids and remove it from your websites.

Does this alter advice to schools?

The Graun spells it out clearly (presumably for those who are susceptible to being muddled by Pink News, like Marge)

This is the FIRST STEP in an investigation.

(the eventual last step could be an even more spectacular implosion than Kidsclub)

That's the one. Whips, crucifixes, BDSM, and looking at a porn mag.

Proceeds going to a children's charity who want to 'reach out to vulnerable teens with no parental support'.

Not being funny, but you could be a childless man in his 50s, regular user of porn and BDSM prostitutes, never dealt with safeguarding in any formal or semi-formal way... and still be like "WTF mermaids"

😂i needed a laugh this morning! Thank you.

Yup, very true.

Because photos of a smi-naked pubescent girl literally in the process of harming herself would be inappropriate?

I have no idea, but I would have thought that at the very least they should be exploring alternative referral routes and following the investigation closely in case something is revealed that makes it 100% clear that the risks of doing nothing are better than the risks of referral (I'd argue we are at that point already, but I can see that an organisation who has been referring for years can;t pivot so quick)

LizzieSiddal · 30/09/2022 10:26

Whatever way you want to (mis)interpret what’s going on, as a preliminary precaution any reputable school or organisations would immediately stop signposting children to Mermaids.

MelodyPondsMum · 30/09/2022 10:27

It's about bloody time.
Let's see how quickly the Mermaids supporters start deleting everything to do with them and start rewriting that history that they thought we were on the wrong side of.

I think they're promoting transgenderism as aspirational.

TheClogLady · 30/09/2022 10:30

Agree.
Surely even a trubeliever in the transgender children project would think ‘I’ll just remove Mermaids from our website for now, can always put it back if none of the shit being flung at them sticks’ ?

Aspirational. Spot on. That's exactly how it's marketed.

^ This.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 30/09/2022 10:52

Though actually - euphoria from self harm is also a thing. It's just temporary, and then you need to do it again or maybe do more and worse to get the same high.

ResisterRex · 30/09/2022 10:54

If what is given here is correct, then it reminds me of when charities got in trouble with MPs for cold calling old people to ask for money.

Sending "digest" emails up to 4 times a day, to children, feels plain wrong. That's before you look at the binder issues in those screenshots.
