Solidarity with the brave women of Iran

Just reading/watching about the tragic death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest for incorrectly wearing the hijab. These women are so incredibly brave.

"Anti-government protests are taking place across Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on 16 September. Amini was detained in Tehran by a paramilitary unit that enforces Islamic dress codes after she reportedly didn’t wear the hijab correctly. She fell into a coma under unknown circumstances while in custody and later died, prompting outrage at religious police and security forces. However, despite its scale, analysts and diplomats are doubtful that the protests will lead to any significant change."

And, of course, last year Iran was elected onto the UN's Commission on the Status of Women, the principal team handling “the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women”. FFS!

Oh god, I’d forgotten that. What a travesty. The UN having a laugh at the oppression and murder of women.

I really want to do something - I feel so strongly about this. But I am at a complete loss over what to do that will make any positive difference. Or even what our government could do to help.
I am so awed by their bravery but devastated at the loss of their precious lives.

Thousands ignore govt road closures to walk to Mahsa Amini’s grave in her hometown of Saqez 40 days after her death:

Despite the regime's brutality, they are still protesting.

Masih Alinejad on Twitter: "This is how we win. Hope over darkness. Despite an estimated 300 killed and 14,000 arrests, students are back on the streets in Mashhad, Iran, this time fist bumps and hugs. The girl who took the vide says; heartwarming to see men are with us. We are no longer alone." #MahsaAmini

“The compulsory hijab is like the Berlin Wall: once it falls the whole Islamic Republic will be done. That’s why the mullahs are scared. Millions of girls and women in Iran are now standing shoulder to shoulder and saying no; we are ready to die, but we won’t live with this humiliation.”

15,000 women are to be executed. Those who are virgins will be raped before being murdered, because Islam doesn't allow the execution of a virgin.

How is this happening? It's beyond appalling!

Where is the world's outcry for these incredibly courageous women and girls?

ArabellaScott · 12/11/2022 15:11

I've had a look and can't find much to support those figures, nor the part about virgins being raped. Not to say its not true, but I can't find many reputable sources reporting on it.

www.express.co.uk/news/world/1694363/Iran-protests-clerical-regime-revolutionary-guard-supreme-leader-ali-khamenei-vn

Oddly, the Express seems to be reporting on this more than the BBC.

Noting Iran is apparently supplying Russia with weapons in Ukraine.

TheBiologyStupid · 12/11/2022 15:57

NewsWeek has the story, but doesn't mention anything about virgins: www.newsweek.com/iran-protesters-refuse-back-down-15000-face-execution-1758578

If the England football team don't refuse to play Iran in the World Cup then they are despicably complicit. As would be all the other teams.

Men need to stand up against this brutality by other men. The excuse of money simply cannot be allowed to happen.

The second link in my post above mentions the SA of virgin girls/women.

ArabellaScott · 12/11/2022 20:05

Thanks, Emotionalsupportviper. I'm still not seeing a definitive statement that supports the Twitter video statement that it's 'becoming a rule' to execute protestors, only that parliament voted to 'teach them a good lesson' -

'the methods of which were not specified'

The 'rape of virgins' doesn't seem to have any solid evidence behind it - from what I read it's based on one article in one paper (Jerusalem Times, I think), years back. Again, I'm not saying it's never happened, but I can't find any solid evidence.

Interview on woman's hour with Faranak Amidi... starts at 03.45

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001f4tf

"15,000 currently on trial, the fear of execution is real."

"Women continue to lead protests in Iran. But many Iranians say speaking out against the regime brings real risks. Now according to State Media a court in Iran has issued the first death sentence to a person arrested for taking part. We get the latest from Faranak Amidi the BBC's Near East Women's Affairs Reporter and Rushanara Ali the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow about what she wants the UK Government to do."
