Solidarity with the brave women of Iran

Just reading/watching about the tragic death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest for incorrectly wearing the hijab. These women are so incredibly brave.

"Anti-government protests are taking place across Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on 16 September. Amini was detained in Tehran by a paramilitary unit that enforces Islamic dress codes after she reportedly didn’t wear the hijab correctly. She fell into a coma under unknown circumstances while in custody and later died, prompting outrage at religious police and security forces. However, despite its scale, analysts and diplomats are doubtful that the protests will lead to any significant change."

We really need to support this in any way we can. So many young people are risking their lives for basic human rights.

mrshoho · 15/11/2022 20:40

I can't imagine the horror facing Women there. The courageous youth standing up for their freedom knowing the very real threat to life. I feel helpless here.

Covetthee · 15/11/2022 20:47

As an Iranian thank you to all of you who want to support and doing your research.

I know it seems really pointless because you’re 1 person but sharing about it on social media really does help! It has really helped the movement and it really keeps the spirits of those back home up knowing the world is behind them

one example NY times has refused many times to report or report incorrect information, but just by people on social media using their voices they have managed to change this.

unfortunately the media doesn’t report the most abhorrent details from the protest. If anyone is really interested then there are a few iranians who are reporting exactly the travesty of what is goinf daily on what is happening

nazanian boniadi is a great person to follow for any information

Thank you Covetthee, I have followed Nazanian Boniadi.

You are right that can feel a bit pointless sharing reports of what is happening in Iran but good to hear that pressure has forced the media to sort themselves out. I guess it's good to make sure that people know the world is watching and that we are standing in solidarity with the people of Iran, although it does feel like the very least that we can do!

Yes thank you @Covetthee . If our small actions to spread awareness can help then that is the least we can all do here. 💗 to the Iranian brave women, girls and also the men standing by their side.

This thread by journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh is interesting. He fact checks the claim, repeated by Justin Trudeau, that the Iranian regime has committed to executing 15,000 detained protesters...

twitter.com/Shayan86/status/1592476918305427458

The widely shared claim that the Iranian regime has committed to executing 15,000 detained protesters is not true. Please stop sharing it. The Iranian regime is horrific, brutal and ruthless as it actually is. There's no need to make up stories.

This is what happens when reputable sources like Newsweek publish stories that lack basic context and facts. Even Candian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tweeted the inaccurate claim.

The Iranian regime is horrible as it actually is. Report the facts on what it's doing.

Here are the facts:

Rights groups estimate 344 protesters, including 52 children, have so far been killed and 15,820 arrested by the Iranian regime.

The regime is well-known for beating up and torturing protesters and political activists in its notorious prisons.

The regime is also well-known for holding sham trials and handing out lenghty prison sentences to activists and protesters, and is widely expected to do the same again.

1,019 protesters have so far been formally charged by the regime. Most have not been charged or tried yet.

There have been calls by 227 Iranian MPs and some hardline groups inside Iran for tough sentences for protesters, including the potential use of the death penalty.

The first death sentence for a protester was handed out two days ago.

One of the six men on trial for taking part in protests in Iran has been convicted of "moharebeh" and sentenced to death, the judiciary has announced.

The unnamed individual is the first person to be given the death penalty since protests started in September. twitter.com/KianSharifi/st…

The Iranian regime is not alien to mass executions of political prisoners. It's one of the most brutal regimes on the planet.

In 1988, after a decree by its founder Ayatollah Khomeini, the regime executed between 2,500 and 30,000 political prisoners. The exact number is unknown.

But it's much harder for the Iranian regime to do mass executions in 2022 for a variety of reasons.

The regime has already killed hundreds and detained thousands of protesters in just eight weeks.

Report the facts of what it's doing to Iranians. They're horrific enough.

The Iranian regime has already issued the death peanlty to one protester and will almost certainly hand out more.

Journalists and rights groups should report each unjust sentence by Iran's notorious judiciary and hold the regime to account, but we must do so based on facts.

Thank you, Signalbox. Yes, reporting truthfully and accurately is essential. What is happening to protestors in Iran is abhorrent; repeating claims that aren't verified risks losing trust and clarity.

It's a good reminder for me that I should properly read articles and maintain a degree of scepticism. Your previous post querying the accuracy of the reports made me think twice :)

Agreed.

Mea culpa - I posted the link to the NewsWeek article.

Agreed.

Mea culpa - I posted the link to the NewsWeek article.

No harm in sharing. It's good to get a sense of which of these news sources are credible and report with integrity. I don't know much about NewsWeek but I did go back to read the article again with a more critical eye. They seem to have made a couple of significant changes, one to the headline which had been pretty inflammatory (about 15,000 facing execution), but also a paragraph about parliament voting for death sentences for protesters. Once the story is out (and being tweeted by Leaders of the Western world) they make changes to the story to make it more accurate, but the fake news stays out there. It's hard to think they don't do it on purpose.

Correction...

"Correction 11/15/22, 12:05 p.m. ET: This article and headline were updated to remove the reference to the Iranian Parliament voting for death sentences. A majority of the parliament supported a letter to the judiciary calling for harsh punishments of protesters, which could include the death penalty."

Para in original article...

"As thousands continue to rally across Iran's capital city of Tehran, defying a brutal crackdown by Iranian forces, on Tuesday, the country's parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of the death penalty for protesters."

The situation is horrific and barbaric @Signalbox . These brave brave young people sentenced to murder. I do believe change is coming but at the gravest cost.

Its beyond heartbreaking that they have executed 2 young boys so far. With many others sentenced to death.

they aren’t allowing them trials or proper lawyers. They kill them, bury them
and then inform their families.

there is currently a 15 year old boy they have sentenced to death.

i can’t wait for the these tyrants get their karma, i hope ever single one of them suffers
