Like the title says really, I'm seeing it all over twitter today and I haven't got a clue what it's about.

Oh noes we're not au fait with memes!

I’m sure Arse is very proud of arse’s meme connoisseur status, I am suitably humbled. I’ll just note that even “Know Your Meme” doesn’t seem to know the “carbonara meme” so it doesn’t seem very reasonable to expect us to. Perhaps its use is restricted to some super-elite, exclusive community of Reddit powermod types? How fancy.

It's a Twitter thing, nowt to do with Reddit. "Penis beaker" doesn't turn up on KnowYourMeme either. If you don't know the carbonara thing, fine, whatever, everyone follows different people, but it's definitely a thing that pops up on social media because even the GC people I follow think Glinner's a bit of a tit.

YouHaveAnArse · 24/08/2022 09:38

GC Twitter seems to have been spending the last few days slagging off Debbie Hayton, but whevs.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/08/2022 09:43

Well that was a non sequitur.

I've seen some slagging off of Debnie Hayton and some support of them.

And?

AlisonDonut · 24/08/2022 09:46

I'm quite happy not to know my memes, I do actually have a life!

DarkDayforMN · 24/08/2022 09:48

I meant “Reddit powermod types” in a more archetypal sense, they don’t just exist on Reddit unfortunately. And you just confirmed it is a TRA thing.

Hilltrekker · 24/08/2022 09:54

Oh noes we're not au fait with memes!

I've never heard of the Graham Linehan carbonara meme, the only ones I've seen associatived with him are that he sleeps in a racecar bed and also one about not being able to order hamburgers from Deliveroo - all posted by sad, incel TRAs who need to get a life.

I don't see why women should go to the rescue of Debbie Hayton, who wrote the rules around toilets in schools. Equally I don't slag them off because I can't be arsed.

These people seem to think either you pile in on, or defend and unless you do either, you are not showing up. Some things are just meh.

Welcome to the real world where people who believe that humans cannot change sex have different perspectives and will agree with some people and not others. Stangely, some ill informed people believe people who disagree that humans cannot change sex exist in an echo chamber.

Hardly. Debbie Hayton (who is also a mumsnetter) has opinions and sometimes others disagree with them and say so.

“slagging off”? Really? Please do link up examples of ‘slagging off’ so we understand whether it is merely disagreement.

The carbonara meme has been going for years. Given this forum only heard of Chris Chan when the case hit the mainstream news (and thought 'Chan' was CC's last name) it doesn't surprise me that this forum's not au fait with memes.

Interesting that you think the Farms will change minds - it's well known for being riven with racism, sexism, homophobia, pisstaking of disability and autism, and is the latest iteration of the group that documented and bullied a vulnerable man to the point that it ended in a heinous crime. You may agree with what they are saying about some of the people you dislike but they are not your friends and good luck getting people to look past the edgelordism.

It's not about whether or not the farms understand the normal rules of engagement.

They don't. But it's that precise lack of censorship which means they document all sorts of things that are certainly not allowed on here. Including many receipts pertaining to the the past lives of a lot people who rather wished they didn't exist.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/08/2022 10:17

Mumsnetters would probably just explain our acronyms and memes to anyone who wasn't aware of them though. Not take screenshots and slag the people off on other platforms, like particularly immature teenagers.

Hilltrekker · 24/08/2022 10:20

This is it, I may not agree with some of the opinions on KF but it is not a hive mind and does a lot of valuable work protecting women by exposing the truth and for that I'm thank them.

Tamworthian · 24/08/2022 10:53

I’m sure JH has a deep knowledge of memes too and so was able to like the description of AB as a bumbling buffoon with no concerns of potential racism. Just ridicule, which is ok. Phew.

deezaknutz · 24/08/2022 11:31

AB (was portrayed) as a bumbling buffoon with no concerns of potential racism.

Well done, even a broken clock gets it right twice a day.

She was portrayed as a bumbling buffoon because in the opinion of the writer she is a bumbling buffoon.

I thought we were all about free speech here.

Yes we are. Which is why we’re able to give our opinions on what the TRA’s say. Seems as though we agree on that. We must have synchronized watches.

SlowDog · 24/08/2022 15:27

I see that there's a hashtag #dropkiwifarms trending on Twitter at the moment, because of doxxing and harassment that they allegedly carried out. And on Wikipedia it says: "The targets of threads are often subject to doxxing and other forms of organized group trolling, harassment, and stalking, including real-life harassment by users. Harassment stemming from Kiwi Farms has been implicated in the suicides of three people targeted by users of the site"

That doesn't sound great to me. Do they really do "valuable work"?

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 24/08/2022 16:27

I wouldn't say they do valuable work but when they claim that someone did something or said something online, they always back it up with receipts.
They mostly just document stuff that people put online themselves from what I can see. It's a bit of a cesspit, but is it any worse than Twitter or Reddit for example?
It's definitely an interesting place.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/08/2022 16:29

Yeah I've seen those accusations bandied around by TRAs before, but Ive never seen actual evidence of it. There wpild have been some legal trouble surely if they were causing real life harm?

Your sources are TRAs on twitter and Wikipedia that can be edited by anyone.

I don't condone doxing anyone and don't think it's at all necessary/justified. The information collated on people feom their social media poating, however has exposed some real creeps. I think they helped get Nick Bate jailed for sexually abusing his sister, as an example.

Exactly, there are doxes, violent threats and images and porn and worse flying about on twitter and Reddit all the time. Reddit has some dreadful woman-hating threads where they celebrate women getting punched or post images of drunk women 'acting slutty' and so on.

A huge chunk of the internet is a cesspit

Saucery · 24/08/2022 16:36

They’re pretty hot on backing up your sources with evidence if you post there. I think it just pisses some people off that there are still places on the internet where the behaviour of some unpleasant people is documented without being deleted by mods. Pisses them off and worries them, because they are used to hiding behind tight moderation to get away with their own misogynistic shit slinging.
KF is a bit like wading through raw sewage to get to the gold nuggets of truth.

Exactly. It's constantly targeted with threats and hacking. But they are scrupulous in remaining legal and, as everyone says, backing up everything that they say. TRAs can't catch them out.

They hate everyone equally.

It all depends on what you call valuable. I'd say, if I was a TRA, that's the last place I'd try to direct people to, and calling women LOLcows knowing that this might send people in the direction of people who document LOLcows, is not their best move.

Saucery · 24/08/2022 16:52

Just tried to have a look, catch up on some things. They’ve been under DDoS attack for a few days, apparently. They really get up the noses of people with stuff to hide Grin

Trans Twitch streamer Keffals has had her minions gong after the site's host because KF has been 'unkind' about her apparently.

Someone needs to grow up and get a thicker skin I feel, the days of #bekind are over.

Yes, I look at a lot of the threads. Everything is well documented.
