Even if this were true, it still doesn't make any sense whatsoever, it's just a word salad to me and I'm probably better informed than the general public on what "intersex", aka VSDs or variations of sexual development, are.

As always I feel for that community who are being dragged into the pseudoscience and queer theory bollocks being spouted by a major, well-respected (not be me) charity.

People with DSDs are either male or female. We all know you prefer the term intersex because it implies some people straddle the two but scientific advances have meant that we now know that's not true.

Sex is fixed, you can be male or female, and there are DSDs. You can try to imitate the opposite sex, or obscure the signs of your actual sex, by doing things to your body but the track record shows that many of the ways of doing this are likely to cause harm, and increasing numbers of people are regretting it.

These are the facts but non of this means you can't experiment with whatever gender expression you like. Gender is a spectrum, changeable, arbitrary and often "assigned" to the sexes, but we can resit it and millions of people do and there have always people people who've done it.

When will this whole movement realise you can be "transgender" (if you must insist on giving countering stereotypes a special name) without it having to involve doing anything to your body, pretending to be anything you're not, trying to force others to back up your feelings, or handing millions to big pharma who are laughing all the way to the bank?

Oh god yes and spare me all the traditional societies crap. None of these societies have ever thought sex was a spectrum or that you could change your sex. Many societies, including western societies, have found ways to hive off gender-non-conforming and gay people and put them in their own categories or spaces in order to maintain the more gendered and sexist categories for the majority, instead of having those categories broadened.

This is so confused. Society doesn't have a vested interest in pretending that only male and female exist. Rather, patriarchal society has a vested interest in applying an oppressive, hierarchical concept of 'gender' onto the two sexes, such that males are superior, and females are inferior. The problem is the gender caste system which is superimposed onto biological sex, not the existence of two sexes themselves.

The very concept of DSDS (or 'intersex' as she calls it) depends on two sexes, because if we didn't have a concept of male or female then there wouldn't be disorders! People who have DSDS are still male or female. Some DSDS can only affect males, and some can only affect females.

Similarly, the concept of homosexuality depends on the existence of biological sex. If we get rid of the concept of two sexes we have destroyed homosexuality in one fell swoop!

Exactly bisom - society does have a vested interest, in trying to make "man" and "woman" (the sexes) adhere to a bunch of narrow, harmful (more so to women) stereotypes. Which is exactly the same as what gender ideology is doing. How can they look at their ideas and not see that? It's not doing anything to counter those vested interests at all if you're saying the exact same thing, but the other way round – that a bunch of sexist stereotypes and ideas can determine your sex.

It's predictably incoherent. Even if it made logical sense, what is the "vested interest" in upholding homophobia supposed to be? What does modern culture have to gain by homophobia? What would I have to gain by turning homophobic?

One day my housemates, who were 3rd-year medical students at the time, came home saying they'd been taught there were 7 sexes. I thought they must mean gender identities, but no, they were adamant it was sexes.
Something must have distracted us from the conversation because I never did get to the bottom of what that was about.
