Mordaunt knocked out. Phew.

Does the area she talks about have a Labour MP or Cons out of interest

MarshaBradyo I believe Roundhay is part of the Leeds West constituency which is Labour and interestingly, represented by Rachel Reeves, who I think stuck her head over the women's rights parapet recently? But, as others have said, it's an affluent pocket of both the city and constituency.

To be fair to Truss, she doesn't seem to have said that Roundhay itself was part of the Red Wall. Her actual words, if that article is correct, were 'I grew up in Leeds, at the heart of the Red Wall.' So it's interesting how that's been seized on and tweaked. Still a really dumb thing to say though.

MangyInseam · 22/07/2022 11:53

I think people feel like Truss is safe. I don't know that she is more so than Sunak, but he seems slick, and I think people feel that goes along with being more likely to take risks. People worried about the economy tend to be risk adverse.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 11:54

Maybe it’ll revert back later

So might Liz Truss, given that we know she’ll say anything if there’s any prospect of there being a vote in it.

I don’t have an issue with that statement. But I get if others feel differently.

I’d watch out for bigger statements re females including males etc as a strong indicator of direction.

I’m not concerned re women’s rights with Truss as I would be with Starmer or Mordaunt, but other areas wrt debt and inflation do concern me, but not really related to FWR thread.

Tanith · 22/07/2022 12:08

Anyone who thinks Liz Truss - or Elizabeth Truss, as she started out - would make a good PM. should examine her time in Education, Early Years, Justice and the Foreign Office. It’s not a good record. Added to that, Cummings accuses her of leaking like a sieve - though how much he can be relied upon for truth is questionable.

She has switched from Lib Dem to Conservative, from Remain to Leave, as suited her career at the time.

In other words, she’s been promoted well beyond her capabilities, messing up brief after brief, and she’s so pliant, she’s practically liquid.

No wonder they want her in place! She will sway and cave to whoever pulls her strings.

Just because she’s saying the right things now is no guarantee she won’t happily parrot the reverse for anyone who makes it worth her while. In fact, her record makes it likely she’ll do just that.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:12

On reflection, I think I'm moving back towards agreeing with you Marsha It was a stupid thing for Truss to say but the actual statement is not as out and out dishonest as some have implied. I think it's equally stupid for her detractors to try and change what she said when it's in print for everyone to see.

Yes there are lots of factors to consider about both parties but I like having a space where we can focus from a women and girls point of view.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:16

It’s a blatant lie. How much more dishonest is it possible to get? No wonder this corrupt lot keep getting away with it.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:17

Is it a blatant like that she grew up in Leeds?

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:18

Blatant lie.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:21

It’s a blatant lie that Leeds is in the heart of the red wall.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:25

Truss goes on to say, 'My journey was possible through aspiration, ambition and enterprise.'
Now that's where I would call her out for talking bollocks. There's plenty of material in that article so why try and make out she said Roundhay was part of the Red Wall when it's on the record that she did not?

MarshaBradyo · 22/07/2022 12:27

I believe Roundhay is part of the Leeds West constituency which is Labour

ok thanks so Labour constituency, a quick google to see the part voting tendency

‘it has been a Labour seat (apart from the Parliament of 1983–87) since 1945.’

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:33

why try and make out she said Roundhay was part of the Red Wall when it's on the record that she did not?

She did - she said 'I grew up in Leeds, at the heart of the Red Wall.'. Are you arguing that Roundhay isn’t in Leeds now? Or that Leeds is part of the Red Wall? What she said was completely unambiguous.

Beowulfa · 22/07/2022 12:36

FFS it's a Tory leadership election; the list of names is not like reading a cocktail menu at a beachfront bar whilst a warm breeze caresses you.

Truss is just about the least worst option. That's about as good as modern politics gets.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:37

Blossomtoes I said this:
Please can we clarify: Has Liz Truss herself made any claims about Roundhay being a Red Wall constituency with all that entails?

To which you replied:
She said it herself in a piece in the Telegraph on 10 July.

If you'd said something along the lines of, 'Well she didn't actually say Roundhay was red wall but she did make some ridiculous claims about her upbringing, here's a link' then that would have been a good point well made. But you didn't.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:39

But she did say Roundhay was in the red wall. In fact, at the heart of it. I can’t deal with someone who swears black is white.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:44

I cannot see where in the article she says 'Roundhay'. I can only see references to 'Leeds'. The overall message was still absurd but I take a dim view of misrespesenting what someone says in order to make a point.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:51

Roundhay is in Leeds. At the heart of it in fact. Here’s a nice little map to prove it.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:56

Thank you, I know where it is. I also know she did not say Roundhay was a red wall constituency.
I can understand how it might appear useful to imply that she did, but misrepresenting what people say, when the evidence is right there in print, is no way to win over voters, which is what Labour has to do.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 12:59

And now I have work to do so you can have the last word if you so wish.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 12:59

Oh the irony. I know from seeing you around that you’re a long way from stupid or illogical @Floisme so I can only conclude this is a wind up. Enjoy your afternoon.

It's the other way around. Sunak, for all his dedication to the service of the rich at the expense of everyone else, does actually have some understanding of the underlying processes involved and how to do that without imploding the whole shebang.

Truss is a complete idiot saying what other idiots want to hear (when in doubt, cut taxes).

jgw1 · 22/07/2022 19:30

I think that it is great that Truss is leading Europe in protecting our rights in this way.

AdamRyan · 22/07/2022 23:32

Leeds is also not the heart of the red wall
It's northern is all

Bradford, Keighley, Stockton on tees, Darlington, hartlepool, Sunderland, Burnley, Blackburn, Preston, Stockport etc is the red wall

I'm happy actually cos I'm ideologically opposed to the conservatives and Truss is a conservatives own goal. But her saying she represents "red wall" is bollocks
