Mordaunt knocked out. Phew.

Neither candidate is going to do much if anything to address things such as self-ID in reality.

Neither is likely to provide additional funding even approaching the level needed for women's refuges.

None are going to provide higher incomes for most of the single parent families, a group more likely than average to be on a low income.

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2022 20:56

Orchestrated campaign painting her as lazy, workshy and incompetent by the Truss supporters Lords Frost and Moylan and Anne Marie Trevelyan. They weren’t even slightly subtle about it.

You realise that Truss voted "remain" and Sunak voted "leave"?

In a membership poll, Badenoch would have beaten all comers, despite the disadvantage (in your eyes at least) of her being black.

Exactly, I keep seeing this posted but Badenoch polled well

ChristinaXYZ · 21/07/2022 22:17

@Blossomtoes conservativehome.com/2022/07/16/our-next-tory-leader-badenoch-opens-up-a-double-digit-lead-truss-mordaunt-and-sunak-are-bunched-together-second-third-and-fourth/

and others. Google it.

And why bring up Mordant except to strawman- that's not the point the @SerendipityJane was making. - that Tories will vote for Liz because they are too racist to vote for Rishi. When clearly that is not the case as per the Kemi results.

Some people are just soooo cross the the Tories aren't racist. They are desperate for racism to exist as much as possible to make themselves feel good.

And as for smearing Mordant - she was the one who stood up and said TWAW - she didn't have to. Then she claimed a lot of other things about her views that contradicted her record - she smeared herself. And that's before not one, not two but three of her former bosses said she was lazy and ineffective. Correcting the record is not smearing. Thank god she is out of the race.

Regardless none of it support the original allegation that the Conservative members are more likely to be racist.

For some reason it is disappointing for you that the Conservatives would like Kemi to be leader (most of those I know do want her, that's for sure).

Make political arguments in favour of your own person/party/faction but stop joining in the smearing of others.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/07/2022 22:29

I dunno -- I think Rishi, privately educated, wealthy, well turned out and well spoken might well appeal to many Tory party members as 'one of them' in those respects, cancelling his Asian heritage.

i think they're more sexist than racist in these circumstances, especially as money talks very loudly, in a language they understand well.

That’s a leap. All I said was that she wasn’t leading polls of Tory members this time last week. Mordaunt was until miraculously all the allegations about her popped up simultaneously on the same day. What a coincidence.

We’ll see who those Tory members vote for, shall we? I bet it won’t be Sunak.

.

SerendipityJane · 21/07/2022 08:28

It'll be Truss. Remember the final arbiters are the rank and file Tory party members and they are more racist than sexist.

Notice how - 3 years after it was "done" and over 6 years after that fecking vote, "Brexit" is still a powerful influence on things.

Which is why someone who campaign for remain is going to be the next PM?

jgw1 · 21/07/2022 22:57

maranella · 21/07/2022 09:09

I hope it's Liz. I really think the Tory party needs to move away from having these ultra-rich, ultra-privileged leaders who are so out of touch with the lives of the majority of the people they represent. I don't want the husband of an heiress as the next PM. We had that with Cameron and look where that got us, then we had another toff with Boris and I'm sick of the entitlement and the knowledge that whatever happens, they'll be okay.

I understand that Liz grew up in what is now called a red wall constituency in a northern city and went to the local school, which due to the failings of the government at the time was a very poor school.

I’m not sure as it could also be a barrier for some.

I hope voters look at policies first as they have different approaches to tax and debt etc

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 20/07/2022 16:39

So on the upside it looks like we just announced who our third woman pm will be (ok it's a stretch but I'm looking hard for a silver lining) and the tory party are working hard to disprove the adage that for a woman to get the promotion she needs to be twice as good as the male contender.

Look up glass cliff.
Have you not noticed we're in the middle of a shitstorm?

GreenLunchBox · 21/07/2022 23:17

The Wikipedia definition of glass cliff literally has a picture of Theresa May 😭

jgw1 · 21/07/2022 23:20

The great thing for Boris is that he is not going to be the worst PM the UK has ever had for long.

Roundhay. A very posh part of Leeds. It is home to a famous rugby club. Rugby Union that is , not the working class League version.

Truss attended school under Tory governments.
As for Brexit , she voted against. But now wants to dump the Northern Ireland Protocol and have a clean break / trade war with Europe. She needs the ERG loonies. For now.

Sunak is a Brexiter. But appears to favour a more moderate version .After all what's the point being a rich merchant banker if the City becomes a wasteland?
Anyway polling puts Liz Truss well ahead. She just has to avoid self inflicted damage and she's in ?

Leeds is up north.
Roundhay may be the posh part, but that does not make it a donkey sanctuary.
At least Liz knows what a woman is.

Needmoresleep · 22/07/2022 08:38

I don’t think it is anything about race. Sunak on a personal level comes across as a plastic politician, to much gloss and too much reliance on PR. It won’t help that he seems to have Dominic Cummins, the ultimate traitor in the eyes of Conservative members, in his corner. Indeed something in the Mail today with Cummins reported as saying Truss is as mad as a box of frogs and the only Minister he ever shouted at.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11037511/EPHRAIM-HARDCASTLE-Dominic-Cummings-predicts-Boris-Johnson-return.html

For many Tory members this will be another point in Truss’ favour. (Though read with caution. The Mail is clearly pro-Truss.)

I also don’t think that the fact that Truss voted remain but has then worked hard to maximise the opportunities offered by Brexit will count against her.

Sunak managed a hedge fund. It is a very rare hedgie indeed who appreciated EU legislation/restrictions on them and I have yet to meet one who was a remainer.

I note also the continuing cognitive dissonance. The Tories are racist, ergo the vote will be decided on race. I don’t think anyone would put money against the Tories being the first major party to have a leader from an ethnic minority background.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 22/07/2022 09:03

I think a headmaster or Leeds MP has contradicted Liz Truss’s claims, saying the area is not red wall and that the school was decent and has lots of prominent alumni.

Have you ever been to Leeds?

AdamRyan · 22/07/2022 09:11

"The North" is not all deprived/Red Wall. Just because someone is "Northern" that's no indicator o f their politics or understanding of social deprivation.

Roundhay is the richest part of Leeds 😂

Its not Surrey

Tanith · 22/07/2022 09:43

Surrey has areas of deprivation. Roundhay is not a deprived area.

You seem over-reliant on stereotypes.

AdamRyan · 22/07/2022 09:48

Nice evidence of black and white thinking there.
Being raised in Roundhay is a significantly different experience to being raised in Darlington for example.
Roundhay is part of an extremely affluent part of the UK, which is really not typical of "Red Wall". Locally known as the "Golden Triangle"

www.google.com/amp/s/www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/property/gallery/life-yorkshires-golden-triangle-stunning-18538882.amp

AdamRyan · 22/07/2022 09:53

For full information I grew up in the area and its only since moving to "the South" that I've appreciated just how affluent the area is. Despite people having Yorkshire accents.

Obviously Liz Truss isnot as rich as Rishi Sunak but that is not saying much

Floisme · 22/07/2022 10:04

Please can we clarify: Has Liz Truss herself made any claims about Roundhay being a Red Wall constituency with all that entails? Or is it posters on this thread saying it?

If it's the first then not only is it dishonest of Truss but also unbelievably stupid.
I find it hard to believe she would sabotage her own her campaign with such easily disprovable nonsense.

If it's the second then I suggest we move on. It's an interesting thread to me as I don't know much about either candidate and I would be sorry to see it derailed.
